Relationally, I prefer a partner with similar interests.  They needn't be identical but I am a big fan of common ground.

I heard a podshow once that said that some of the longest lasting relationships were those where there was something that kept the two people from becoming too much alike.  Examples were given of having different skin colors, having grown up in different cultures, or being of different religions.  The reasoning was that things tend to become boring when too much is alike.

I think it is different when it comes to BDSM interests.  If you have a sadist with a non-masochist one of them is likely to be disappointed, for instance.  Ideas of what things are safe and sane and what are not should be compatible.  However, this still leaves room for a lot of differences outside of sessions.  My Master loves watching sports on TV - I'd rather play Sukoku.  Yet we are close enough that we can finish each other's sentences, or if one of us forgets a word the other one can come up with it.  The same things hit us as funny and all it takes is a glance at each other and it is hard to stop from laughing.

You can be very compatible without being very similar.  Variety is the spice of life and I love having someone around who can make me look at things in a new light.  It definitely adds wonderful flavor to our relationship.

Agreed..   It means to me that you "fit" each other.     I would rather have the "pea" and the "Pod" than 2 peas in a pod.   [:)]

Compatibility includes not just activities, but attitudes and values. You may enjoy different activities but as long as you both like sharing what you've done afterwards, that is a compatible attitude. If he likes opera and you aren't interested in hearing about it, that's incompatible.

Moral values need to be compatible also. Which is why you see people hard limiting others with opposite political views. You may not agree on what the solution to a problem is, but if one of you cares only about the finances and the other's primary focus is the emotional fallout, then that's incompatible.
