Lonesoul -> Manners what hapenned to them? (1/6/2006 12:26:33 AM)

I have another question What has happened to manners in our society? On the web and off. On the web you see it all over the place their is no respect for peoples wishes or requests no mater how polite that they ask. People have to be rude about their preference to even get a little bit of respect from others on-line now. It isn't just on-line thought you do see it more here than in the real world. The anonymity of the web grants people the false belief that they can be PIGS or ASSHOLES to anyone they chose because it can't get back to them. And if it dose come back on them they just start a new identity on line. But you also see it in the real world people cutting you off in traffic, music so loud that they cant even hear an emergency veichale go by. You rarely hear thank you or please anymore either. There is no respect for public property any more. Has any one gone into a public bathroom lately? Graffiti all over the place Nigger this or that. Do you think we are losing our social values? If so why?

Thanks for your input,
Lonesoul

I think it may be a glass half full/half empty situation. I've seen a lot of rudeness but I've also seen a lot of courtesy. Just yesterday I had a child of around six hold a door open for me. I thanked him and gave his mother, who was watching but hadn't prompted the action, a smile and said "you're raising a nice kid there."

It may be a case of what bothers people sticking in the mind and their not noticing the existence of social lubricant.

The web has always been a place that brings out the worst in some people. It's the nature of the beast, but at the same time, it's a place where it's much easier to ignore slights and crude behavior. After all, when you're in a face to face environment and someone is behaving badly, there isn't an "ignore command" that can make him disappear.

Matter of interpretation too, as I see it. I find some things in your post offensive, and they could be considered as bad manners too.

You've asked a similar question before about "society" in general and people being barbarians. As I see it, you're probably thinking with a very jaded and unhappy view of the world and the people in it.

Life is good, and what you make of it. Glass half full here, and then some! [:)]

I do bad things in the name of good. Sometimes it's the only way to Get er done.

If that is all they're doing then it is a sign of improving manners because it wasn't so long ago that folks would be shooting at ya.

Manners in society has not disappeared...now on the web may be a different story..that you "cannot see me thing" allows many people to be rude....hopefully here the real rude ones are pushed to the side...in r/l that takes a bit more effort but still should be done be everyone

Interesting you should bring that up. Im reading "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell and he points to that event specifically.
Good read, if anyone is interested, and it does pertain to the topic in a very broad and yet meaningful sense.
Enjoy,

actually, it started before then. it happened when our mostly agrarian society moved to the cities en masse after world war 2. suddenly extended families were split apart and there was no longer that learning that took place from such a situation, schools were built that separated grades and put people into arbitrary classes based on age instead of ability, and more families had two people working. schools started churning out mediocrity and society started turning that way, too. i could go on, but that might be taking too much time, but i've got some interesting facts to back it up. instead of looking at the graduation classes of the 1960s take a look at 18 years before that. you'll find some interesting things.

i just wanted to add in direct response to the OP that one needn't be rude to get one's preferences or wishes heard or to get respect. if one stoops to the level of being rude to get respect, does one truly get respect in kind? who knows what gets back to them. i actually see quite a bit of integrity around. i know many folks who use please and thank you as a rule, rather than as an exception. i've only once hear the "N" word in the last few years other than on here in another thread and this one, and i grew up in the deep south. it wasn't all that common amongst most people there even a while back. manners were to the extreme there almost. a gentler way, so to speak. that's not to say there were not problems, as one will find at any time anywhere.

some people have little ones today who don't steal, say mean things to people, and use good manners. i think it's a matter of seeing the big picture over the trees sometimes. i do hope things get better for you and you see the good in people still out there and in here.

i wish you well.
