Well, whoever they pick has to have "face appeal" - photogenic and appealing to the media.  Which lets out a lot of us in the first few seconds.
 
Realistically, since it's someone who has to be able to do certain activities, they'll likely only actually Look at resumes and applicants who are in top physical condition, and have diving certs as well as a pretty face for the camera.
 
Nice daydream though.

Hell, Kittin, I include myself at the top of the list of folks who are pretty much automatically disqualified for lack of photogenic appeal!  I Know the camera doesn't like me LOL.  (Come ta think of it - I'm not to fond of it, either.)

The top Restraunt critic on the East coast started by just going himself, writing the article and then offering it for free to several newspapers. Once he gained name recognition, it was no longer free but his meals started being. Would have to do some research to find his name again, but the guy was retired and liked to eat. He didn't just review fine dining either.
