when you go to the doctor, do you have a lot of bruises and marks that can/will be seen by the doctor. and if so, what do you tell the doctor? are they very accepting of the answer "i practice bdsm"?

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 9:46:05 AM)

I've never had a doctor ask about my marks and they've never caused an issue with my physical health. I think if you have an attitude of "it's no big deal" then it won't be. If you have an attitude of being worried or scared, then they might think that's part of it.

You can try and find a kink aware professional in your area, or just come out to your doctor. Depending on where you live and your circumstances, this might be the right choice for you.

If a physical problem occurred and my marks might interfere with that, I'd definitely come out about it fully, being prepared for questions and simply and calmly explaining the situation.

LadyMorgynn -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 9:50:32 AM)

Heheheh, I can see it now. I take my sub to the doctor for a cold or some such, and the doctor asks my sub about the welts on his back, and I reply, "Oh, I did that with my cane."

<evil grin>

You may ask: Would I really say that? Well, yeah. Very likely. But maybe not, depending on my sub's level of comfort with being 100% "out." Otherwise we'd have to come up with some sort of story, although how you can explain away that sort of thing successfully is beyond me. So much easier to just tell the truth.

typesgirl -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 9:52:46 AM)

I'm with Lucky. Your doctor isn't there to judge you. If he or she does than find another doctor. Besides, once it's out then if you ever do have an ailment etc that might interfere with your play you'll be more comfortable asking for frank advice.
When I told my doc (because of a female problem) he was totally supportive and said that my sexual health and mental expression was just as important as any treatment he could provide. Wow, did I feel better.

perverseangelic -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 10:27:01 AM)

Never had anyone ask.

Even when I was having my worst problems with self-injury and had some very serious, non-bdsm related cuts on my arms, no doctor ever even said anything to me ~shrug~

MrBiguun51 -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 11:55:49 AM)

OK well I will take the question a little further

How do female subs feel about going to the Dr. for a complete exam by a Dr. (I am talking complete with fett in stirrups Dr. using a spectum)?

Would you feel different if your Master or Mistress was there with you?

Do you get hot and wet as the Dr. examines and probes you?

For those with clit and labia piercings, do you leave them in or take them out before going to a Dr.?

Do you prefer a male or female Dr.?

If you prefer a female and Master insists on you seeing a male, does it embarass you?

It is required to keep tabs on my health. It is a yearly thing that is not exactly pleasant, but must be done.

No

quote:

Do you?
I mean, if you go in for a prostate exam do you get all hot and bothered?
In a word, no. It is actually very uncomfortable and sometimes rather painful.

Not an issue for me, but I would leave them in if I had them, I figure it's nothing new to the doctors

A female. It's like that old saying, going to a male gyno is like taking your car to a mechanic who has never driven or owned a car. How are they supposed to know personally what is going on "down there"?

quote:

If you prefer a female and Master insists on you seeing a male, does it embarass you?

He doesn't, but if he did I would give him the response above. It's not a question of embarassment, but of practicality. I did go to a male doctor for about 17 years and it didn't bother me one bit, it's only when I started going for my yearly gyno exam that I switched, and only for the reasons I stated above.

It's cold and uncomfortable, but necessary

If I were getting a procedure done, I'd prefer someone there. If it were just for a regular check-in, no.
quote:

Nope.
quote:

I prefer a doctor who can speak clearly and in frank terms.

No, though I doubt I'd get involved with someone who had stupid ideas like that.

nelbot -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 1:59:38 PM)

I can answer at least one of those questions:
I have a clit hood piercing and have had doctors question about it, ie does it hurt, etc... but I never take it out- can't infact. I never even took it out when my son was born, the doc said it wouldn't be in the way and that was that. I'm not particularly embarassed by it, though the questions do make me a tad uncomfortable.

mitsu -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 2:39:12 PM)

Haha, the question should be, how many of you with medical fetishes get turned on when going to the doctor? How about those of you with foot fetishes getting off on browsing in a shoe store?

In response to the original question, on explaining marks to doctors, many doctors are "alternative lifestyle friendly."
The Kink Aware Professionals list is national: http://www.bannon.com/kap
You may find other lists for your locality after a bit of googling.

In terms of permanent marks, I've had a few doctors ask about my scars and even refer me to counseling services. Personally, I think this kind of respectful concern could be helpful for those still recovering from self injury or in situations of domestic abuse.

I prefer a male doctor to be all doctor's I go to. I get along better with men. Hence I can talk to them about more things easier.
My dom has been there a few times. It is actually helping some of his phobias. Watching me get stitched up, etc.
Nope, no wetness, why would you?
No piercings here so I cannot answer that question.

orfunboi -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 3:23:33 PM)

i am lucky i guess, i have been to my doctor with bruises, marks from suction cups on my forehead (note; cups mark VERY quickly on the forehead), cuttings, brandings among others. At one point i told her i wanted to be tested for anything that would come up, if someone was to have contact with my blood. She takes it all in stride and i have never felt i couldn't confide in her. It makes it a lot easier to talk to her and not be afraid of being judged.

It's just a necessary evil. I happen to like my gyno, so it's been demoted to mildly unpleasant, not evil anymore.

Would you feel different if your Master or Mistress was there with you?
I'd appreciate the fact that he was interested in my well being

Do you get hot and wet as the Dr. examines and probes you?
Oh hell no. You've been reading too many smutty stories.

For those with clit and labia piercings, do you leave them in or take them out before going to a Dr.?
N/A

Do you prefer a male or female Dr.?
The one time that I went to a female physician because I thought a female would be more compassionate about female issues, I found that she wasn't listening to a damn word I said. I've always preferred males. Older, wise-type males, not young attractive ones, either! lol I've found that male physicians who choose to go into female-oriented medicine seem to have a genuine caring and interest in women.

If you prefer a female and Master insists on you seeing a male, does it embarass you?
Also N/A

No one has brought this one up yet, but in many states health care professionals are mandatory reporters. I would be very fearful in my state to go to the doctor or hospital with marks or bruises as the doctor and or nurse would be required to report them and if I was married or had a live in boy friend it is very likely he would have domestic charges filed against him bye the state. Evan if I said it was consentual. I would have no say in the matter.

Sensualips -> RE: going to the doctor (1/6/2006 4:41:28 PM)

Perhaps it is the small-town thing, but I am confident all of the doctors I have seen in the past 15 years would have definitely inquired about marks -- depending on the location and appearance.

When I broke my ankle in several places after falling down some stairs I was asked to explain EXACTLY what occurred three or four times by three or four different people. My husband (at the time) was also asked for a description twice bu two different people. Who was present, how did I trip, what was I doing just before it happened.

I assume if there had been discrepencies they would have taken it further. It was a little annoying at the time, since I had seven breaks and thus was in PAIN and not feeling chatty, but I also understand it is required.

My sister went in once with a cracked bone in her hand and had some bruising on her body plus a large bite mark on her arm. They questioned her extensively before letting it go. Unfortunately she actually WAS in an abusive non-bdsm relationship at the time.

It is not a small town thing. It is the law to report anything suspicious. To my knowledge it is within the 50 states.
Doug took me to urgent care for stitches to my temple in October. He was not permitted in the triage room with me so they could question me for the 3rd time what exactly happened to me.

First, to Madeline Serenity, I recently "came out" to my doctor. She'd been my family practitioner since I was three years old, and was there throughout my own pregnancy/child birth.

It was difficult, because she is not just my doctor but a family friend, and my family is NOT comfortable with my lifestyle. (It's one of those if we don't talk about it we don't have to think about it type things, unfortunately.) However, I felt it necessary to explain my lifestyle, because I get tested before AND after each new sexual partner (call it paranoia) and my doctor also treats me for bipolar disorder, which my lifestyle does affect. I explained it in very layman's terms... I am a submissive (I didn't mention switching, things would get too complicated) and a tad bit of a masochist, I look for healthy relationships that are applicable both in and outside of my lifestyle, and while I always practice safe sex, I tend to have a lot more sex than the average woman.

Now...

It is a necessity for my health.

If He/She felt they needed to be, that is Their decision, not mine. It would be a bit humiliating, but that's sometimes fun. ;)

Shove a pipecleaner down your urethra. Does this excite you? Then a pap smear might. Me, no way.

I have no preference, except I prefer they have small hands.

quote:

Wouldn't bother me, except I would feel my Master should be more concerned with proper health care than who's looking in there.

My Dom knows that i have to see the doctor monthly, so He is careful as to where i get my bruises and besides whenever i have them, i am so proud to have them because they come from Him [:)]
