And you can attach all kinds of eye hooks and rings to the posts.

I don't know and I haven't read all the replies, but when I first moved back home and didn't have a bed, I slept on a queen size inflatable air mattress. And they can deflate easily for more space too , and was quite comfy, other than being to low to the ground, Which can be solved by getting one that's fancier.

I live in a room five metres by four metres, and I would love to have a double bed, well, just a bigger bed than my single, but space is a severe problem as living in one room, well all the other functions of life have to be considered, (aside from toilet  and personal cleaning facilities, that has it's own room). I have considered moving elsewhere, but what I have, it's location would be sad to leave and all for the desire for a bigger bed, not really a good enough reason, you understand.

So I have looked and looked for an option and came upon good old American ingenuity, trust the Americans to come up with something like this, a wonderful idea.

But given the doublespace beds would be a good option for compact living, does anyone know if anything like it is available in the UK ?

Alternatively, are there any other options I can consider , any ideas ?

the futon works for me right now, i'm not allowed to climb stairs yet so it's a decent substitute without taking up too much space in my spare room.  i like those convertible sitting area/loft bed things, but i'd be worried about a malfunction.  moving parts eventually wear out.

Daddy had a futon and I thought it sucked, I refused to sleep on it with out an airmatress on top, Of course it was on top of a wooden bed frame, and not the mettle or wood frame they came with.

A murphy bed was my first thought also.

When I lived alone in an efficency apartment I had a futon on a wooden frame that served as a couch and slid down to become a twin bed to sleep in.  There are crappy futons and there are good futons.  More expensive doesn't always mean better.  I recomend getting one that has a foam inner core.  Those hold up longer and don't get lumpy like some will over time.
