Kellogg Co said on Wednesday it was removing its Austin and Keebler branded peanut butter snacks from store shelves and put a hold their shipments due to the current Salmonella food poisoning outbreak. But the company said its own investigation has not indicated any concerns over its products, nor has Kellogg received any consumer illness complaints.

Kind of ironic - Kellogg = Road to Wellville, or not, as the case may be.

i wonder if this is the source of the salmonella outbreaks in those 11 states the news wouldn't name last week.  i know around here there were a snotload of people with flu-like symptoms but it wasn't the flu.  hmmm.

Please, Kellogg didn't produce the peanut butter in their product. They bought it from the company that already had the recall.

I love the Austin peanutbutter crackers. Good grief. Do you think that made me into what I am now.

What I want to know is how salmonella, which is typically found in meat, poulty and eggs, ended up in peanut butter. It's disgusting *gag*.

I can only thank the manufacturers and insist you eat MORE! When I was in Austin I used to stuff icecream that had peanut butter cups. OMG, orgasm inducing it certainly is!

Yeah, that's pretty odd, although it does contain powdered milk, I believe, but even so, surely any kind of bacteria is killed in the processing?

Here is the thing: peanut butter should contain peanuts, and perhaps some salt. Nothing else. But most commercial peanut butters contain emulsifiers and all sorts of other shitty additives (corn syrup, anyone?) - perhaps that's where the infection comes from, if they use by-products of milk to emulsify the stuff... Yuk!

Lesson I learnt when I moved to the United States: read the labels and buy plain foods only. So many 'foods', in fact, read like amateur chemistry experiments... I buy 'all natural' peanut butter: it has crushed peanuts, and nothing else. You need to mix it all up because the oils separate, but that's a natural process... People: don't buy the experiments of the food/aggro industries  .

Those are great points (I wasn't referring to the ones on your chest, honest!) and sugar, as we know, is a great vehicle for nasties to breed.

I don't think I have ever seen 'natural' peanut butter, I'll definitely hunt it out by visiting some whole food shops.

MissM, there was a little shop on Sussex University campus that stocked nothing but natural peanut butter, and that was last millenium, so I'm not sure they're still there, but it shows you can find the all-natural stuff :=) .

Also, if you have any Amish around, their grocery would have it. Here, we have a healthy food section, in our big supermarkets (thank the University for that) so it is relatively easy to find.

It does indeed, I just hadn't thought of looking for a purer variety of it. We're trying to eat healthier all round and it's the one thing I have every day (seriously addicted to it but realise now that it's likely all the sugary crap they put in it that I'm addicted to as I've cut out all other unnatural sugars from my diet).

You'll laugh at this regarding Sussex Uni... I had to go there for something a few months ago, the stairs leading up to the walkover between platforms were being repaired and in their place were a set of rickety old open plan office stairs... I got almost to the top and then had a panic attack. I literally couldn't move for fear and this little girl, who must've been all of seven, helped me over, bless her. The thin g is, I'm not afraid of heights, it was the feeling that I could easily slip and go through the steps that caused the panic - plus they were swaying slightly.

Sussex Uni is my nemesis - I'll hunt the natural kind from more local whole food shops, there's one in London Road so will nip there tomorrow. Great memory you have!

Maybe they used contaminated poo for fertilizer?
