FYI....we call it FDNY....and also i think a LOT of credit goes to the flight crew....but i agree with your post.  *happy and thankful for the passengers safety*

You know... I bet the pilot was all "I bet I can get this WHOLE FLOCK!!"

*bapbapbapbap*

But seriously, I think it's crazy that he had the skills to land it in the shallow part of the river. Good for him.

ElectraGlide -> RE: US Airways flight just went into the Hudson River (1/15/2009 8:00:03 PM)

That is great that out of 155 people, no one was killed. The only casualties were 155 pairs of under-ware. I will not be afraid to admit, if I was on a plane crashing, I would be making a crash landing in my under-ware.

auburnvixen -> RE: US Airways flight just went into the Hudson River (1/15/2009 8:23:38 PM)

US Scareways strikes again! Good for that pilot, though - that was amazing, to land in the river like that and not hit anything else on land or in the water. Thank God everyone human is safe...but those poor animals...

Not crazy.  Good training, and frequent "off" time spent in a simulator doing Emergency Drills to train the body to react automatically in a set sequence when something goes wrong.  It gets done either in the air or on the ground in a sim at Every level of flight training from the earliest stages through ATP.

During my primary training - and my instrument training - and my commercial training - the thing stressed most by every flight instructor I met, and every FAA agent I got to know (and there were a Lot of them I was on a first name basis with back then, simply from the amount of time I was spending at the airport LoL) was doing Frequent EM drills.  Spin Recovery. What to look for in places to set down in an emergency landing - and what to look for to Avoid during such. Power off landings.  Attitude and Altitude adjustments in emergency situations.  Emergency engine restart procedures for various types of small aircraft that I was routinely flying at the time.  It was what they stressed to All of us.

Apparently it was the heroic efforts of the pilot that made the difference here.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090116/ap_on_re_us/plane_in_river_pilot

The pilot who guided a crippled US Airways jetliner safely into the Hudson River — saving all 155 people aboard — became an instant hero Thursday, with accolades from the mayor and governor and a fan club online.

The pilot of Flight 1549 was Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, 57, of Danville, Calif., an official familiar with the accident told The Associated Press. Sullenberger is a former fighter pilot who runs a safety consulting firm in addition to flying commercial aircraft.

Sullenberger, who has flown for US Airways since 1980, flew F-4 fighter jets with the Air Force in the 1970s. He then served on a board that investigated aircraft accidents and participated later in several National Transportation Safety Board investigations.

Bravo, "Sully"!

Thank goodness they all survived.  What a good story to hear about.

Well I learned something new today.

"Bird strikes are on the rise, according to the committee. After a bird strike in the United States, the remains, called snarge, are sent to the Smithsonian Institution's Feather Identification Laboratory to identify the species."

They test jet engines by shooting bird carcases into the intakes.

For the most part, the birds are vaporised.

YAY US AIR FORCE!!!!!!!!!!!

(hey, I'm a USAF brat!)

Owner59 -> RE: US Airways flight just went into the Hudson River (1/15/2009 11:25:45 PM)

Of the many miracles that happened today.....

All the passengers and crew were out off the plane in 90 seconds!!!.... with the captain checking the cabin twice before being the last to evacuate.Think about that next time you land...[:D]

By the time the emergency doors were open, there were private boats, tugs and ferries pulled up to the floating but sinking jet.

When disasters happen,New Yorkers run into burning buildings.Amazing!

All the men made sure that the women and UMs were off first before jumping out.

Emergency crews were there in minutes as well as more private vessels.

There were a few people who were pulled from the water but most of the folks were on the wings or in rafts.

Only one serious injury, with one guy breaking both legs. Many have already gone home.

The jet is downstream on the south tip of Manhattan, tied off waiting for the investigators.

Vendaval -> RE: US Airways flight just went into the Hudson River (1/15/2009 11:27:19 PM)

The plane may have gone through a flock of birds according to initial reports.  Live Science has an article which explains what happens in such a situation -

"How birds can down a jet airplane"

By Robin Lloyd, LiveScience Senior Editor
posted: 15 January 2009 04:44 pm ET

"Basically, if the birds get too close to the engine's intake, it's like a vacuum — the birds just get sucked in.

"The initial stages of a jet engine are made up of a lot of compressor blades. Those aren't very big and they can be very easily damaged," Oderman told LiveScience. "Even if one of those things breaks off, then the one blade will go through the rest of the engine and it's like shrapnel to the engine."

And in the case of the Hudson River crash, the birds apparently took out both engines.

"Apparently in this particular case it seems both engines were hit. If it was a flock of birds they flew thought it wouldn't be a surprise to me," Oderman said.

Airports, Oderman said, take several precautions to keep planes safe from birds. For instance, they often don't plant many trees nearby, as these are nesting areas for birds. Since La Guardia is right on the water, he noted, there are a lot of water birds around. "

MIne too.. in fact my Mom got shuffled out (honorably..she was an officer) when she got pregnant with me WITHOUT actually being married to my Dad at the time.  She was 3 months pregnant at the time.

...way i heard it, they hit a flock of geese. Canada geese probably. Oh Canadaaaaa..........

sirsholly -> RE: US Airways flight just went into the Hudson River (1/16/2009 3:32:18 AM)

i heard on the news this morning the pilot was the last one off and before he left he went through the entire plane to make sure no one was left behind.
If anyone ever thinks there are no modern day hero's, i hope they are reminded of this man.

NawteeNeecie -> RE: US Airways flight just went into the Hudson River (1/16/2009 3:36:36 AM)

I think the same exact thing! This pilot will go down in history as a hero!!! KUDOS to him!!
