This was a long time ago.

He said that Americans make the mistake of voting for who they want rather than thinking about the people who are going to be appointed to various positions. That those people have a more direct impact on your life.

Sometimes I wonder if he was at least partly right.

Probably.
Ideally they should be making things easier for The People.
From what I can see once they get in they start trying to dictate to the people.
They forget that they are in office to *serve* The People not to try to tell us what to do!
They're not "leaders".
That's not why they're on the payroll.
A Sargeant or Petty Officer in the military is more of a leader than someone sitting in an office in Washington or in the Senate or Congress.
Those are "messenger" positions.
That's the problem in Washington, they mistake "service" with "leadership."
I have to laugh when people say that the president is; "the leader of the free world".
Oh?
So Bush is the British People's or Canadian People's leader?
Look at Hillary Clinton, who has (she) ever lead?
Certainly not even Bill!
I don't know about anyone else in here but I have no desire to be "lead" by anyone in Washington!
I want those people managing my government in an efficient manner.
Term, I think your friend was probably right.

Just wondering... how many of Obama's or McCain's would of been appointees do you know well enough to influence your vote?

How could you be sure who they would be before the election?

I think you vote for the person then trust in their ability to make competent appointments.

That's patently ridiculous.  There is no way a voter can predict (or find out) who Obama or McCain would appoint.  None.

Even the pundits predicting who Obama would appoint were off the mark:  Schweitzer or Schwarzenegger for Energy (Steven Chu), Richardson or Lugar for State, Pritzker or Sibelius for Commerce..

And these were predictions made after he was elected.

What a silly statement.

I doubt it is true. Many Americans vote for a candidate they do not want (lesser of two bad candidates) as a consequence of one party monopol system (with two wings). It would be ideal if there was a candidate and people would vote for the candidate they want.

How many of you Americans, when confronted by a vocal politician, listen to their words with a cynical ear ?

so what do we do?  demand each candidate have a fully vetted cabinet so we can examine thier choices before we elect them?  as if choosing a candidate isn't difficult enough?  now we have to examine the histories and views of the people who will work under them?  that will take four years in itself!  i don't think the american people really want to go through that!

Americans, like every other voter in a democracy, vote on the basis of "what have you done for me lately".  The fact that Bush had his agenda totally sidetracked by 9/11 and yet was able to get us out of the Clinton recession and the loss to the economy after the Towers fell is amazing. People soon after that horrible day clamored for action, and the President did what he gets paid to do...protect the homeland.  We have not had an attack since and it certainly is not because the Islamic extremists have not tried.  We will never know just how many attacks, such as the planned bombing of nine airliners over the Atlantic, were stopped in their tracks by our intelligence agencies, benefitting from aggressive use of technology.
The war in Iraq was winding down after the surge and Obama was wrong, along with Reid and Pelosi, in calling for immediate withhdrawal.  The housing crisis blew up last year and that pretty much nailed the coffin closed for Bush..and McCain who should never have been the republican nominee, in my opinion.
In two years time, if we are coming out of this recession bravo for Mr. Obama!  If we are seeing a failure of his pork laden stimulus package which, unfortunately, is my bet, in two years time Pelosi will be sipping latte's in San Fransciso.  Once again, it's going to be "what have you done for me lately" and the ball is now totally in the democrat camp.

So your foreign guys opinion is just one of many...like anything else in life there are many alternatives that people consider when voting.  His is only one of them...

Amazing you wingnuts keep repeating this lie.  I guess you've conveniently forgotten that Clinton left Bush with a considerable surplus, which spendthrift Bush quickly turned into a massive deficit.

Yeah, what a fantastic job Bush has done with the economy in those 7 1/2 years, huh?

Yeah, that would explain why he attacked the country (Iraq) where bin Laden wasn't, instead of going after him as he'd promised, the country that had nothing to do with 9/11, and in doing so created more members of al-Qaeda.  Heckuva job, Bushie!

Not to be mean, but when there becomes a country that is "perfect" then maybe I will listen to their opinions of American and Americans.

We don't have crystal balls, and I don't think we vote like it's some kind of beauty pagent.   We listen to what they have to say, weigh he pros and cons and vote the best we can.

"The fact that Bush had his agenda totally sidetracked by 9/11 "

Sidetracked my ass, it was all part of the plan, like pearl harbor was years ago, the tarrif of abomination and so many other things.

If you get a small Cesna into commercial airspace you had better have a flight plan or a working radio and the right answers. If you are flying a commercial airliner and you go even slightly off course they know it immediately and you had better have some good answers when the call you on the radio.

There is no doubt that the government let 9/11 happen, just as they let pearl harbor happen.  With 9/11 they actually have a better excuse though, if they had shot down the planes the wreckage would be scattered. When I read all the conspirscy theories on this shit I was like oh bullshit, but when I saw the list of people who were suposed to be at work at the Twin Towers that day who had an unexpected day off, I changed my tune. Also when I heard of certain stock market trades or shorts that made people millions I changed my tune. Also when I heard that certain companies had really good insurance and collected double after 9/11 I changed my tune. They are no longer conspiracy theorists, they are cooperation analysers.

You people may think we are playing with fucking kids here, but nothing could be farther from the truth. And what better way to keep winning than to cause your opponent to underestimate you ?

I see...I guess you are not part of the crowd in Washington D.C. that governs based on "Polls".
In case you might not be aware...a "poll" is the measurement of how people feel on a particular issue
and how it is affecting their vote......in other words..."what have you done for me lately"...Maybe se should start an educational thread on the meaning and use of polls.

That "failed attempt to privatize Social Security" will do more harm to the future retirement of young people who were sold a bill of goods by the democrats that this legislation was proposed only to help Wall Street.  Who among us here does not think they could do a better job of running their money than the government?  Gimme a break...Government knows only how to SPEND money not MAKE money. Even now as we have a distinct possibility of a global recession turning deeper, the people you are happy with are planning carbon cap taxes so they could build windmills!  Do you actually think that Social Security will be there in 20-30 years?  I guess it depends on your time horizon, huh!  Fuck the kids...as long as we get ours now!
As far as ignoring member of the Clinton administration...you have a convenient memory lapse here.  It was Bill Clinton who did not go after Bin Laden when Yemen offered him on a plate
Bill Clinton was up to his knees in the Lewinsky scandal and did a "wag the dog" routine that was laughable.  (Correction: Lewinsky was up to her knees in Clinton)

Amazing you wingnuts keep repeating this lie.  I guess you've conveniently forgotten that Clinton left Bush with a considerable surplus, which spendthrift Bush quickly turned into a massive deficit.

Another memory lapse, I guess.  There was a downturn in the economy in 2001 that began in the Clinton final quarter.  BTW..:"wingnuts"....LOL..I kinda like that..

Another expert on jihad...the fact that al-Quida recruits went to Iraq is true.  However, radical Islam has been growing for decades and first really gained notoriety with the assassination of Sadat.  In the Phillippeans, Pacific Islands, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Afganistan militants have been active and growing.  Iran is the pinicale of such power and until Bush threw them out the Taliban had it in Afganistan.  One thing no one can discuss, surprisingly since the left is so full of theory, what would the world be like if Bush had not rid the planet of Sadaam?   Maybe two nuclear powers in the Mideast...?? , well three if you count Israel.

Yep, I agree, we vote for the popular one and forget they can't accomplish squat if congress doesn't agree--hence the dangers of polar opposite parties in president and congress--he isnt a dictator, everything he does has to be approved by someone--we elect, then we think all is well, when what we need to do is keep in constant communication with the elected "supporting" officials too.

Geez cory, you really believe all the nonsense Rush, Sean and FauxNews spoon-feed to you?

Apparently so, keep reading:

You can begin by educating yourself that "poll" does not equate to "what have you done for me lately", not even if you simply put them in the same sentence.  Follow that up by educating yourself on how Americans view candidates and vote for them.

quote:

The fact that Bush had his agenda totally sidetracked by 9/11

Again, an education on how Social Security works is in order.  Privatizing takes away from current retirees' checks.

As far as ignoring member of the Clinton administration...you have a convenient memory lapse here.  It was Bill Clinton who did not go after Bin Laden when Yemen offered him on a plate

It's laughable that you are repeating this favorite-of-conservatives tale, disproved long ago, by Bush's 9/11 Commission no less.  And it wasn't "Yemen" dummy, it was one Pakistani named Mansoor Ijaz, who was so unreliable not one government would sponsor his bogus story.

And surprise, surprise...Ijaz then became a 'commentator' on FauxNews.

quote:

Amazing you wingnuts keep repeating this lie.  I guess you've conveniently forgotten that Clinton left Bush with a considerable surplus, which spendthrift Bush quickly turned into a massive deficit.

Yeah, the dot-com bubble, the 9/11 attacks, and the Enron et al accounting scandals (Dec 2001 - present) were all Clinton's fault.  LOL!

I notice you didn't address Bush turning a surplus into a massive deficit at all.  Why am I not surprised.

quote:

Yeah, what a fantastic job Bush has done with the economy in those 7 1/2 years, huh?

You can look up the affects of 9/11 on the economy.  I'm tired or doing your research.

Holy crap, you can't even comprehend your own words?  Your own OP claims Bush 'got us out of' the post 9/11 economy drop.

As far as the recession we are in now, sure Bush is a contributor,

The first sensible thing you've said in this entire post

but he also is the guy that was warning about the problems coming from the sub-prime area, along with McCain I might add,

Uh, no.  In fact, it was McCain's own economic advisor Phil Gramm (R) who authored the bill that created credit default swaps, the root cause of the current economic crisis, and the failure of IHG, Lehman Brothers, et al.

but the democrat party focus on housing for everyone and forcing the banks to make loans to people who had no income checks or if they even had an income...and than Barney Frank et al changed the rules governing FannieMae and Freddie Mac to allow them to buy this crap from banks....

As I pointed out above, the $700 billion bailout was caused by Phil Gramm's bill, not the housing bubble.  If not for his gift to his banking buddies, it would have been a $70 billion bailout instead of $700 billion.

And the 'forcing' of banks was not by Democrats, but rather by mortgage portfolio investors' greed demanding more mortgage loans to make more portfolios.  Lenders were more than willing to comply, issuing 'declared income' loans etc.

There is more than enough blame to go around on this one.  Just look at the proposed pork laden democrat stimulus bill and you can see where we are heading...DOWN!

He'd be contained like any other dictator (Kim Jong-Il, Omar Al-Bashir, Mugabe, etc.), as would nuclear efforts.  Your own 'memory lapse' neglects that there were UN inspectors in Iraq 24/7 making sure of that, until Bush threw them out to start the Iraq War in 2003.  You remember that war, don't you?  The one that was going to be a cakewalk, have flowers thrown at our feet, wouldn't cost more than a billion dollars (it's up to, what, 700-800 billion so far?), and would be over in a few months?

You're funny!  The very first 'examples' I see in this claim from the Bush State department:
1. Shoe-bomber guy (already addressed, prevented by a passenger, not Bush)
2. Jose Padilla (hmm, finally went to trial, and geez, no evidence of the radioactive 'dirty bomb' Rumsfeld got everyone so excited about! Amazing)
3. Lackawanna Six, went to an al-Qaeda camp, convicted of providing material support to a terrorist organization
.  Charged or convicted of conspiracy to "wreck havoc in the U.S" as you allege?  Nope.

Heckuva job Bushie!

I rest my case.  I have no idea who is behind the screen and, frankly, it doesnt' matter.  What does matter is what is inside the skull and how those trillions of cells are communicating the reality of the world with clarity.  My guess is that when someone loses all control and gets irrational in their thinking and, more importantly, exposes that thinking to the world they may not be the 19 year old sophmore just learning about the world and studying the history that many of us lived, but they sure indict the quality of education they experienced.  "fucking kids".....jeez  how defensive and certainly not, until now what I was thinking.
To think that any President could be a traitor to the people he has sworn to protect just is not thinking that dwells among the sane.  FDR is not on my most popular top ten list, to be sure. To think that he knew about Pearl Harbor..!!  That's silly talk.
To think that President Bush knew about the World Trade Center, the air traffic controllers, the military, and whoever you know "unexpectedly" did not report for work that day is insane, to be kind.  Do you know how many planes could be in the air at one time over the east coast? Hundreds if not a thousand.  But you would not know that since you accepted some leftie nuts blog comment as fact.  My company had offices in one of the towers, we lost some people,  I lost a neighbor and
a close friend lost her husband.  I just can't tolerate idiotic thinking on 9/11 that serves no purpose and doesn't even have the entertainment value that some really witty people on the left express here in their postings.

Look, people disagree on politics and that is the wonderful joy and strength of a democracy.  Somehow, all of our individual ignorance adds up to important solutions to problems.  Americans are the last of a breed of people that believe there is a solution to every problem and don't fall back on conspiracy theories or act like "fucking kids" when faced with a threat.
