I never found Circuit City a good place to buy anything.  Teh biggest people to miss Circuit City will be the workers who will now be looking for other jobs.

K

Same here. I hated the place. I rarely actually bought anything there; I just used them to bargain with Best Buy - "Hey, I really want to buy this laptop from you guys, but Circuit City has it 50 bucks cheaper - if you can match 'em, I'll take it right now." I'm a salesperson's nightmare.

Stores make a small fortune selling extended warrenties. That is why they push so hard to sell them. It is almost always a bad investment for the buyer...

Well, when a business fires it's best employees and then hires new cheaper ones the business gets what it deserves. Remember when circuit city fired it's best employees and told them they could reapply for their job later at a lower pay scale? I decided I would not buy anything from them after reading that story.

Sad thing is, the people who made that decision get paid either way... no way they're walking out of the liquidation with empty pockets. They probably dragged the thing out until after the new year to secure an extra year of seven-figure compensation based on holiday sales of gift cards that are no longer valid

True

As for the gift cards that money must be returned. People can get their money back if they know where to write. When a gift card is purchased the transaction is not recorded as a sale by the business until the card is redeemed (State law in most states). The money is held in a special account until the card is redeemed. The stores do get to earn interest on the money while waiting for redemption. If the store goes out of business the state holds the money and people can get it back if they know how.

Yes, I work in an office that deals with this kind of thing. I won't say what company I work with for privacy reasons but I am an assistant to a person who deals with these type retail matters.

That's right...I'm a kinky dominant and I'm knowledgeable about random retail matters. How hot is that? LOL :-O

One less competitor in the retail electronics world is not a good thing.  With CC gone, I only have Best Buy (ugh) which is in every other town, and Fry's which is nearly a 1hr drive.  For computer stuff I have Tiger Direct (20 minute drive) and MicroCenter, a 1hr drive.  And, of course, the online world...

I wonder if they've slashed the price on the Sony 550 BluRay player to <$300....

Just remember: bankruptcy court puts creditors on a list from highest to lowest. Waranties  and returns on products you purchsed knowingly are seldom honored--major manufacturers won't honor them either in most cases.

Gift cards: read the fine print, most have an agreement that says, we dont have to honor them if xx happens and bankruptcy court will ( IF they address them at all) only give you pennies on the dollar and you might see that in 1-2 years.

Yeah, well... no. They all have HUGE competition on the Internet.

That may be the major factor that brought Circuit City down.

UPS brings most of MY major purchases, it doesn't pay to shop around town any more.

So far Circuit City is honoring the gift cards and the liquidation sale is a good time to use them up. Extended Warranties are supposed to be honored through a 3rd party company.

Circuit city is getting what they deserve.

Perhaps, but the 30,000 employees they're laying off don't necessarily "deserve" that.

Yup,just saw the illegals standing near the mall intersections, holding the "going out of business sale" signs for them.Probably the 10th GOOB sale I`ve seen there in the last year.

But,look at the bright side of the recession......

30 % off!!!

I havn;'t purchased an extended warranty for myself but about 1 1/2 years ago I bought my grand daughter her first computer and she has two infants.  They destroyed it once and Circuit City fixed it.  Now, the warranty fixing destruction is gone?  It was almost as expensive as the computer.

Wow. Anyone holding stock in Circuit City just lost it all. Press release says they don't expect anything left over to pay the holders of teh common shares. Trading at a nickel a share right now.

Meh, they had plenty of time to get out, Circuit City's been crashing hard for a while now.

That's what I was just going to say. Anybody that's still with them deserves a loss. That's like waiting an hour to board the lifeboat of the sinking Titanic when you're standing by it.
