Termyn8or -> Antithesaurus assistance please (1/16/2009 8:30:43 AM)

I am 48 and have noticed how words seem to have changed meaning. I believe that communication is the key to whatever agreement that can be reached. Therefore I propose the antithesaurus to make some of these modern words more clear.

Now there are a few groups of words that seem to be interchangable, this by who is speaking as well as politics it seems.

Some groups of words or phrase  :

freedomfighter, rebel, insurgent

genocide, restoring order

collateral damage, atrocity

The three groups have one commonality, they seem to be interchangeable based on the public opinion desired de jure. If someone could help clear this up, I think we could all communicate more effectively.

What doesn't change, doesn't grow. What doesn't grow doesn't live.

Applies to languages as well i'm afraid....

Good grief. Shutter to think if we still spoke English here instead of American. England should take note of the improvement we made on their language. Now if we could just get them off the metric system.

Give the poor bastards a break, they're only just getting the hang of it, forced, as they were, to depart from the Empirical measurement system by those damned Europeans.

you will find a portion of your answere right now.  NLP.  "neuro linguistic programing".  study that concept and that gives a peak at todays communication.

freedomfighter, rebel, insurgent

genocide, restoring order

Should be easy to distinguish between these two.

I've never liked the term collateral damage, often used by military types that don't want to admit the thing they did was no better than any other type of thing a typical murderer does who would usually be locked up for such a crime.

It's a travesty to allow people to use words to reduce the impact of their crimes, often happens but we shouldn't let them pull the wool over your eyes. Can I go out on a mission in the high street stab five people to death and call it collateral damage? Those that dupe suicide bombers also speak of collateral damage. Everyone has their own self approved mission don't they?

Also sounds like this is a political misunderstanding rather than a vocabulary one.

TheHeretic -> RE: Antithesaurus assistance please (1/17/2009 12:05:10 PM)

       I'm not fond of the way words get stretched until they become meaningless.  "Rape" now means she felt bad about it in the morning.  "Torture" means there were no cookies in the room.

DesFIP -> RE: Antithesaurus assistance please (1/17/2009 12:06:46 PM)

People have used propaganda to redefine words for quite some time. It isn't new with freedomfighters = terrorists.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Antithesaurus assistance please (1/17/2009 2:30:54 PM)

kidnapping = "extraordinary rendition"

torture = "enhanced interrogation techniques"

gutting the Constitution of the US = "living document that must change with our needs"

global warming = "climate change"

creationisim = "intelligent design"

lies = "our spin on this is..."

sexisim = "preserving traditional roles for women"

homophobia = "defense of marriage"

and on, and on, and on....
