Carnae7 -> Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/16/2009 3:21:15 PM)

I'm struggling with something that happens quite frequently to me.  I often receive invitations to be friends with people I have never met!!!  I know nothing about these people, have virtually zero chance of ever getting to meet them because of our respective locations, and have never seen them in the chats or posts or... anything!

I really do not understand asking people to be in their friend networks when they know absolutely nothing about them!!  How the hell can they expect someone to be a friend when they don't even know that person?

So, why do people do this?? Does anyone know?  Does anyone understand it?

Also, on the off-chance we may have met at one of the functions and I just do not remember the person, I at least give them the courtesy of looking at their profiles.  While about half of these people have at least some information on their profiles, I also find that quite a few of these people have absolutely nothing in their profiles at all!  And I mean NOTHING!  WTF??  They don't even fill out the fetish list, or anything!

[And while we're on this particular topic, why have a profile at all if they don't put a damn thing in it?  They don't even check off a few things on the checklist?  Are they that damn lazy they can't even check a few boxes?  (I have honestly just decided that they must be cheating on a spouse/ SO, so I don't bother with these people at all now.)]

To top it all off, these people just issue a friend invitation without even writing to me to get to know anything about me first.  Again, WTF?!?!?

CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN WHAT THIS WEIRD BEHAVIOUR IS ALL ABOUT?  PLEASE??

And does this type of behaviour bother anyone else?  I just get totally mystified when I get these odd requests and cannot for the life of me understand them.  And it bugs me.

Thanks E/everyone.

Nope.

LaTigresse -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/16/2009 3:51:13 PM)

It doesn't bother me at all.

Someone coming here to the forums and creating a thread just to bitch and whine.........mildly annoying.

Do what I do...delete them.  Nothing to stress over,

bluepanda -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/16/2009 4:03:35 PM)

I've gotten at least one friend invite from a profile that didn't even exist, which I still find more than a little puzzling. I didn't accept, because I outgrew imaginary friends, oh.... months ago.

littlewonder -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/16/2009 4:11:01 PM)

It's a MySpace thing..the more "friends" you have the more special you seem to think you are to everyone.

They have a need to belong and usually these are people who have no friends in real life.

I just shrug it off and delete them. No big deal.

kittinSol -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/16/2009 4:25:32 PM)

Just vaporise them.

I tried, but only premium members have that feature.

Loliita -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/16/2009 6:05:11 PM)

I just delete them.

It's no different then those guys who write and say...."I like you, will you dominate me?"
They have nothing about themselves in their message or profile an most don't have a picture. I wonder do they really expect me to just say "yes" to a random message?

I don't think many of the people on collarme think much before they write messages or send friend request.

Oh yes, lets not forget the guys who send chat request from an empty profile. I don't even waste my time clicking the chat box anymore.

*snort* the Pirate just got an add request from some guy in Orlando. Neither of us have ever heard of or interacted with the person. *shrug*

ALAstella -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/16/2009 8:18:22 PM)

And, like, you really expect everyone coming onto this site to behave normally?

You want to be careful.. Some of us will really blow your mind.

No it doesn't bother me.... I can think of a lot more life-affecting things to get riled up about than friend requests from strangers.  I just delete and move on [:)]

SilverMark -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/17/2009 3:38:45 AM)

OH NO.....I don't think I have any friends on my profile......sniff.....[:o]

Just turn them down....

YoursMistress -> RE: Invitations and empty profiles!! (1/17/2009 6:19:16 AM)

...considers offering friendship to SilverMark, reads the rest of the post, presses "cancel"..

I think that bulk mailing is an effective marketing approach in many media, and that executed with varying degrees of sophistication can result in success.  Who hasn't heard the old saw that if you ask 100 people to have sex with them, at least one will respond affirmatively.  (...glances up to see if anyone blinks...) Given that, and with the idea that being seen as having more friends here might add credibility, this could be part of a systematic approach to build a strong profile from the inside out, so to speak.  (OK, that sounds pretty weak, but in a civil case merely a preponderance of the evidence is the standard of proof.?)

yours

I was thinking the same thing, "myspace" is notorious for out-of-the-blue friend requests, it's probably a carryover. Here as there, just say no.

Just do what I did SM. Create fake profiles so I can add them as friends. Trouble is some of them have been rejecting my requests.

WTF???  You can't even count on yourself to be a friend?  Tooo Funny!

Thanks E/everyone!  I've gotten some good answers here that help shed some light on this strange phenomena.
