Try tuna, it's very mild.  It's not even fishy when it's raw.

And if you're trying to get fish down for the health benefits, but find that you can't stomach it, a close second is taking the omega-3 fish oil pills.

I eat tuna regularly for the health benefits. Solid white albacore, straight out of the can, doused in lemon  juice. That's as close as I'll ever  come to eating sushi again.

I would imagine that the salmon at Red Lobster is pretty nasty.  Most of thier food is.  It relativley unskilled people Frying or baking frozen portions of stuff.  Go to a real restaurant.  Salmon comes in a wide variety.  I would imagine RL has South American farm raised salmon, which is just nasty.  A fresh wild red or king Salmon, is the way to go.

I can not speak for you but one of the fish I like is Orange Roufy (sp?).
Another form of fish I like Cod balls (fish meat rolled as balls). The King Oscar brand used to make them.

I happen to love Red Lobster, Course I do only get their captain morgans coconut fried jumbo shrimp and their endless cheddar bay biskets, so I can't really comment on other meals, but other people in my family have loved it too. It's the only reason I go frankly lol.  I have a few places I go for one meal and one meal only though.

I am a food snob (and don't deny it), and have been blessed with the privledge of eating lots and lots of fresh high quality seafood, prepared by skilled chefs.  It really doesn't cost much more.   I prefer to eat in locally owned, small restaurants, and avoid the chains as much as possible.

Wild Salmon from a Locally owned bistro would be your best introduction to eating fish.  Not something prepared and frozen in China, shipped to a restaurant, and reheated by a guy on parole, who hates his job.  That's just my 2 cents.

This is what The RL website says about where they get their lobster and their fish.

Whether it’s live lobster from the coast of New England, fresh salmon from Chile or one of the many wild-caught fresh fish from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, our extensive distribution network of air, sea and land shippers allows us to get it to you so quickly that it’s almost like being there. In fact, we ship more fresh fish than just about anyone in the restaurant industry.
It’s a journey that begins the moment the fish comes out of the water. Once inspectors determine that it meets Red Lobster quality standards, the fish is packed on ice at an optimally cold temperature, but never frozen, to maintain quality and freshness. Then, it is rushed through our distribution system to your local Red Lobster, where it is expertly prepared just for you.

Yeah, because a chain restaurant website is the ideal place to get information about what you're eating.

So between not eating fish, and not eating vegetables, what do you eat? Seriously, you're an adult. If you're trying to change your eating habits to improve your health, suck it up and learn to eat healthy foods. Refine your palette. You're not going to try things and like them immediately, just keep eating them until they taste good to you. Think of food as fuel to keep functioning.

In regards to fish oil, a lot orange juices are fortified with it now, look into having a glass a day.

ArticMaestro -> RE: What kind of fish would be good for someone who thinks fish is disgusting but would like 2 try again (1/16/2009 6:49:27 PM)

You asked for advice, I gave mine.  I was wrong about the frozen part.  And am surprised that they have any wild fish at all.  Red Lobster is a step above where I thought.  Learn something new every day.

My main point was on the Salmon.  Chilean Farmed Salmon is nasty.  It just is.  They dont ever swim, unlike thier wild counterparts who travell thousands of miles in thier life time, so they are mushy and weak.  they live in pens where the water is incredibly polluted from all the fish in the net bag shitting in each others faces.  So they have to pump them full of Anti biotics.  Often they have to dye the meat red.   They are mushy and taste like crap.  Your waitress there was good to warn you off it.

Wild Red Salmon is a firm, red meat and very un fishy.  I would think it an excellent choice to get into fish.  Tuna steaks, as was also mentioned, is a good one also.

Did you get sick on it or something?  I eat sushi pretty often, and I know there are some risks, as is with raw shellfish as well.

No, no, I just really disliked it. I'm just not much for fish at all, and raw fish was way more fish than I could handle. The texture, the taste, the "holy shit I'm eating a raw fish" factor, all of it just didn't agree with me. I know there are people who love it, but it's just not for me.

I think there are different ones.  I know some of them are fishy.  I take the CVS brand. It has a green and white label.  It says "Natural Omega-3".  The main ingredients include "body fish oil" (anchovie and sardine) flax oil and soybean oil, among a couple of other things like gelatin.  I don't know if they're less potent than some others out there, but there is no fish taste at all, unless maybe you are super sensitive to it.

DesFIP -> RE: What kind of fish would be good for someone who thinks fish is disgusting but would like 2 try again (1/16/2009 7:03:00 PM)

A mild white fish is where to start. Don't fry it, bake it in a light tomato broth. That way no smell of fish. Serve with pasta.

KyttynTheMynx -> RE: What kind of fish would be good for someone who thinks fish is disgusting but would like 2 try again (1/16/2009 7:04:09 PM)

YHMA, I pretty much had the same feeling about fish as you did.  Then I discovered Tilapia (as previously mentioned earlier).  OMG!  Its soo mild.  Kinda reminds me of chicken.  I have never had a fishy smell in my home, or in the taste.  Definitely give it a go.  I know they sell it at wally world.  I think its about 10-20 dollars per box (cant remember how many pieces come in the box though).

Yeah there is kinda of a headtrip about it being raw fish, and some of the raw fishes are too much for me even, and I love fish in all it's forms, I even like it when it's fishy.  But with raw fish, tuna is the only one I eat, and sometimes salmon.  Some of the fishes are too chewy and nasty...like those orange sea urchin eggs that they make sushi out of.  I just can't get past that.

Other mild flavored fish you may want to try are:
Halibut
Cod
Sole

Lucylastic -> RE: What kind of fish would be good for someone who thinks fish is disgusting but would like 2 try again (1/16/2009 7:19:05 PM)

not a fan of fish here, but I do occasionally like smoked mackerel, fresh caught trout baked in almonds  and tuna in a can.
Cod, sole and halibut and new for me.....tilapia  are good in good ol fish n chips(battered)

Fish with tomato is the one way I DON'T like it, lol, although a friend's daughter made a shellfish and tomato sauce combo at Christmas that was excellent. Then again, I'm a sushi fiend and seafood fan who LOVES the smell of fried freshly caught fish. [:D]
BTW bluepanda, anyplace where sushi smells is the LAST place you want to get sushi, lol.

I stand by my recommendation of whiting though, as it is what I usually make for people who "don't like" fish. Check out online recipes for foil packet baking, many of which combine fish and veggies.

I also vote for tuna, especially seared ahi (maybe I'm spoiled on the Left Coast).  I know many people here that don't like fish at all but will devour seared ahi. (very good with soy, ginger and/or wasabi sauces)

yours
