It's interesting how Obama is going to close Gitmo, but we are still keeping the people there in custody. Call it legal parsing...like Clinton. I mean when people say they want to close Gitmo down, don' t they mean that they want those to be free?  So, aren't we just subtituting one prison for another?

Where did you get the idea that they'd be released if Gitmo was closed?  Closing Gitmo down has never been about freeing the people held there, it's about making sure they're treated in accordance with US law.  We've used Gitmo to do things that would be illegal on US territory - that's why folks want it closed.

I just hope that one of those people that Obama frees doesn't end up driving an airplane through the Capitol Building. I mean how embarrasing would that be?

Didn't you just say that he's going to be keeping these folks in custody?

Notice how the poster tries use fear in trying to get us to abandon our values and the moral high ground.Sad.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the last month,24 detainees were released without charge(by bush) and sent home after 6 years in that hell hole.
The latest guy to be released claimed that he was fighting the taliban!!!,.... when he was mugged and sold to us during the roundup/fuck up in Afghanistan.lol
I heard on the BBC that most of the gitmo detainees(what a nice fuzzy word to use)were similarly captured and held by mistake.
Knowing the bushies un-believable,un-precedented capacity for screwing up,that`s not hard to believe.
Owner, I would not be so quick to use the term "moral high ground."  Most of those who claim to have such a position are actually standing in a sinkhole of depravity.  While we often disagree on political ideals, I have more respect than to count you amongst their numbers.  Thats almost the equivalent of "Stay the course."
Remember that most of the criminally insane believe that they have the "moral highground" .... then they get elected to congress.
Fresh start indeed and great party. I am a pessimistlic optimist. My predictions for Obama first term are: Gitmo will be closed soon, there will be some progress on foreign policy front, Obama economic policy will fail.
        Here's another interesting one, from the Weekly Standard.  Pretty rational, and pretty legitimate questions that we'll start learning the answers to soon enough.
I count four separate fears. Whether he's a crypto-Marxist is not one of them. Neither is the absurd fear that he's secretly a Muslim, even a closet jihadist. Nor is the groundless claim Obama was actually born outside the United States and isn't really an American citizen. Forget all those.
Oh give me a break. Why are all the *public* documents concerning his citizenship *not available* to the public then ? He can make this issue go away in a heartbeat if it's not true.
Now, who gives a shit, the constitution is toilet paper anyway.
No, he doesn't say they'll be released.
He can shuffle them off to to some other place with basically the same rules making the closing of Gitmo pointless symbolism.
He can give them access to the US court system where any two-bit defense lawyer can demand the presentation of evidence or the dismissal of charges. Most of those people were caught fighting US forces and you don't collect evidence on the battlefield. Most people still contained in Gitmo are there because their home countries *will not take them back*. Meaning any of them released will be released on our soil. Hopefully, on the spot vigilante justice will ensue.
He can come up with some bullshit propaganda saying his solution is miraculously different from either of the above which will be lapped up by both the Marxist Media and the Useful Idiots that voted for him. My vote is on this one.
Your really think Bin Laden is stupid enough to attack his greatest concentration of US domestic allies ?
Two answers readily available to anyone with access to the Internet:
1. Birth certificates (yours and mine included) are not available to the public for obvious reasons of identity theft.
2. Obama has already posted his birth certificate on his campaign website to silence the idiots who doubted its existence.  Plus the highest-ranking documentation officials in Hawaii have verified its existence and its authenticity.
But then it's so much easier to ask these questions to create goofy 'doubt', than to research the answers, now isn't it?
And you of course have proof of this assertion, yes?
Uh, dude?  Being caught fighting *is* evidence.  Try watching L.A. Law or Boston Legal in reruns, you might learn something.
Meaning you favor mowing down foreigners who haven't been charged with anything, and/or were legally released (by the Bush administration, by the way) since there was zero evidence (or testimony by soldiers) of any wrongdoing.
Got it.
Irishknight -> RE: Here's an interesting editorial (1/23/2009 4:11:20 PM)
Cagey, technically, Obama could shuffle them off to some other unnamed place for business as usual.  I don't believe he will but that is something that the naysayers will have to see for themselves.  Just bide your time and wait for the chance to sy, "I told you so."
Cagey18 -> RE: Here's an interesting editorial (1/23/2009 6:04:42 PM)
Yeah, yeah, okay.  "can"
*grumble*
Damned unlikely that Obama will do so though.
