Jade, the best way to ask for a mentor is to have in mind exactly what you want to learn and then approach the person letting them know that you are interested in learning about those specific things, letting them know that you feel comfortable with them, and asking if they would be willing to help. I had an incredible mentor a few years ago when I was wanting to learn more about bondage. I was a Domme at the time and wanted to make sure that when I bound my slave that I would be doing it safely. My mentor knew from the start that I was not looking for play but for the knowledge. I had another Master teach me about cutting, something else that my slave wanted and I wanted to be sure to do it safely.
Since then I have mentored many and find it very enjoyable. They have something specific that they want to learn, I feel very comfortable with my knowledge on that subject, and we work on that. If I am asked to teach about something I have little knowledge of I point them to someone who could be more helpful. It is apparent that many here have seen situations where mentors have taken advantage of a situation but I know of many, many cases when it has worked out very well.
