OK i saw this one dumb commercial where there is a guy and girl sitting in a park i think. The girl offers the guy a bite of her popsicle. One of those no brand 50 cent kinds from the looks of it. He starts talking about how it has HFCS in it and it's bad for you. She basically say's no thats not true.

Now my brain is wondering why the hell is this commercial on my tv. Am i supposed to just go "yea it's good for me" or something like that?
Is there some kind of lawsuit or something against HFCS going on? Is there some push to ban it or something?

YourhandMyAss -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 4:47:51 PM)

Comercials are a way of getting information to a bunch of people with little effort.

Personally I don't belieeve the comercials. My doctor has told me to stay away from all fructose and and high fructose, and  corn syrups since they are bad for you, and I try to stay away from it. IT's not easy it's stuck in just about everything, it's even in hot dogs and mac and cheese lol

I've gone to the site that the commercial is pushing and it looks like the FDA did some more tests and found that HFCS isn't really that bad for you like everyone thinks. I don't know why its bad noone seems to know that answer we are just told its bad and we believe it like a bunch of sheep. They used to say equal was better for you than sugar well the main ingredient hes been shown to cause brain cancer.

Wierd. Was looking at this thread and this commercial came on.

I'm not sure what to think about it at all, but I do try and stay away from crazy processed stuff... most of the time... sortof..

ThatDaveGuy69 -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:01:29 PM)

HFCS replaced sugar in just about everything back in the 70's.  Frankly, I miss having good old fashion sugar in my Mt Dew and Pepsi.

If the FDA says the sky is blue I'm going to check for myself.  Look up the history of Aspartame, aka NutraSweet and you'll never trust the FDA again.

It's funny, because my stepdaughter was trying to understand earlier tonight why I hate processed food - she, being the wholesome American teenager that she is, tends to be suspicious of anything that doesn't come out of a packet - and I took the example of the chocolate syrup she drowns in her milk. It's full of that corn syrup crap. Add mono and tri-glycerides and other lovelies, and I felt offended at her look of disgust when I took a bite of my baguette and Brie [8D] .

lusciouslips19 -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:02:09 PM)

I'm sure just like evrything processed, a little is not bad for you. But many of us are processed food junkies and the more processed food and sugar laden food you eat , the worse it is for you. If you are a controlled person who can eat just a little bit, I'm sure youre fine. But lets face it. Whole foods, not processed and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet is what is best for a long healthy life. Oh, and plenty of fiber in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, so you can poop and it dont stink![:'(]

Why would hot dogs need to be sweetened? No, i don't even thing i want to know. Processed food for processed people. Sugary hot dogs?

BbwCanaDomme -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:11:53 PM)

Like most things, it's fine if you have it in tiny quantities, but it's seriously in everything. And inexplicably, it's certified as organic, which is kind of hilarious in a terrifying and sad way. I'm super careful about buying bread now, especially whole wheat bread, because of how much hfcs is in it. I've been sticking mostly to rye and sprouted grain, which is generally better for you anyways so it's all good.

The FDA takes money from the Companies it's supposed to be regulating. That's enough for me to give anything they say the evil eye. No matter how you shake it, it tends to always go back to profits. Take real food and break it down til there are no nutritional values left in it. Sell the processed food  to you and then sell those vitamins and nutrients to you.

blacksword404 -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:16:29 PM)

Well here is an article on how HFCS is made. Way more complicated than i would have thought.

Yep. HFCS stimulates the liver to become insulin resistant. The fact that Americans consume 70 pounds of the stuff per annum, and that there's an obesity epidemic, is not a coincidence. As for federal agencies and the regulation of the aggro/food industry... I highly recommend Fast Food Nation. It's illuminating (if totally depressing).

(Edited to sort out the quote box.)

Owner59 -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:22:00 PM)

I have cut out any food with it.

Most candy(store bought)soda and many foods you`d never think of,has it.

My scoutmaster worked for General Foods and we had a cabin(at scout camp) full of most any GF product in bulk.He also had bulk items like corn syrup in 5 gal. buckets.

We(scouts)used to pry chunks of the lard-like white stuff out and melt it to use over our pancakes.Yummm.Not really. It`s nothing like cane sugar and plain(without flavorings),it`s gross.

housesub4you -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:28:44 PM)

It's just the "new Trend" to to keep comsumers guessing, .

Everything has some level of sugar or fat content, this is just as new gimmick to keep you in the dark.  They are trying to make processed foods sound as healthy as homemade, this way you don;t need to spend time cooking a meal, you have more time to work.

Don't belive it, look up work hours since 1965 and notice a increase with the increase in prepared foods for the family,  They never say they are better; just easier for you; so you can work more

Best>>>>>  Use real sugar and control the amount

I'm leaning more towards this too.  I read up on it a little bit, and I found it a little bit confusing, but the basic idea I came away with was it's basically another form of sugar, which is used in so many things nowadays because it's cheaper to process than sucrose (sugar) derived from beets and sugar cane.

I checked my pantry and frig and found it in 4 foods-- the wheat thins, the yogurt, the jelly and the ketchup.  But if I'm only having 8 wheat thins, or a six-ounce cup of low fat yogurt,  I still think that's a better food choice than say a piece of cake with regular sugar in it.  And for as often as I use jelly or ketchup ( A tablespoon or so once or twice a month) I doubt I'm taking in that much corn syrup at all.  I think moderation is key.  If we're eating processed junk foods and sugary drinks all day, then yeah, HFCS is going to be detrimental to your health.  But in small amounts here and there, I seriously doubt it's going to cause any issues.  I think it's getting a bad rap just like "fat".  And now everyone buys margerine and skim milk.  Sure if you're eating fried crap and bacon 5 days a week, it might cause problems, but a pat of butter on your toast or 2 tablespoons of cream in your coffee isn't going to promote a heart attack.

angelikaJ -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:34:18 PM)

Here is the Wikipedia link on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_fructose_corn_syrup

(the commercial is put out by the corn refiners)

Owner59 -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:41:11 PM)

It`s also cheaper than cane so switching out to more or all HFCS means more profit.

Of course with not saying anything about it,like with shrinking the net weight contents but keeping the same box and price.

If you`re willing to look, there`s plenty of non-corn syrup choices.

There`s a great pancake house at the foot of the Killington ski areas where they make maple syrup right there in the middle of the place. The place smells heavenly and is warm and cozy from the kettles boiling.

Of course they serve the real thing with the food but have a caption in the corner of the menu that says if you want the fake maple syrup(corn syrup with colorant) they have it,but you have to pay extra for it.[:D]  Vermonter`s humor there for ya.

pahunkboy -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:46:45 PM)

wouldnt it be abit late for them to decide it is safe?

LOL  like gallons of it has been eaten.

the body can not metabolize this. (as well as sugar) it squeezes more part of sugar into a cell.  this is done by a machine.  since it is man made- the body can not handle the amounts of it - the ooze down each isle in the store.

now that my taste buds are back- I can taste how much of it is in food.

this and white flour are what packs the weight on me.

snappykappy -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:50:13 PM)

just like luscious says u wanna be sure and poop and not stank

AlexandraLynch -> RE: High Fructose Corn Syrup (1/17/2009 5:56:13 PM)

For me at least, eating anything with anything beyond a trace amount of HFCS equals nausea, pounding headache, bodyaches, and mental fogginess. So I avoid it passionately.

So I cook most of what I eat from scratch. I can rest assured that the beef and cracked wheat soup I am currently eating is free of HCFS and preservatives because I made the soup from the stock on up.
