HotFaerieMama -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/20/2009 11:08:49 AM)

i myself do not go to the local ER unless i have no other choice my brother  went there once due to a large cut on the inside of his forearm and one of the nurses bandaged up his arm and he sat there for 4 hours while his arm bled and was rebandaged several times ( he was drunk at the time also) the next day mom took him back and they tried to do a new chart and she got them to pull up the one from the night before instead of re doing the whole thing as not a whole lot had changed well it had stopped bleeding at some point. he ended up needing 19 stitches. but why  did he sit for 4 hours ? he was bleeding profusley... there were other people who were not bleeding who went before he did... i thought that was wrong... and stupid.. hell one of his friends had cuts on both arms and was bleeding and he sat there for 6 hours.. why did they do that? .. what would they have done if he had bled to death right there in the waiting area? and i know for a fact that some nights there's only one doctor in the ER which means that you just sit there longer...

Lynnxz -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/20/2009 1:28:45 PM)

It might have been that the other people were treatable by nurses... while stitches (apparently) require a doctor.

It's highly unlikely that your friend would have bled to death from a bandaged cut on his arm.

I did ask him, if he was going to operate on my back, would he initial my ass? [&:]

One or two years ago when I was in my mid-teens *cough*  I went into hospital as a short-stay patient to have a large cyst removed from my wrist.  I shared a ward with 3 other ladies. Two were having varicose veins removed, the other had a large benign tumour on her butt-cheek.

Before the operation the surgeon and the anaesthetist came to see us all to check we were ready for surgery later that day.  The surgeon drew a circle around the lump on my wrist.  He marked the top and bottom of the ladies' veins.  For the lady with the lump on her butt...he drew a large arrow on the back of her thigh pointing upwards....

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/20/2009 2:12:37 PM)

I had a back injury falling off a horse, in 2000, and despite getting weaker and weaker and worse and worse, to the point of not being able to move much or walk very well, Doctors, several of them, kept insisting I was fine go home.

It got so bad I was falling down sometimes and couldn;t stand up strait at all and needed  a wheel chair to get from the car up to the doctors office.

One time I had to go in by cab, because it was a pretty bad situation, and I was due to fly home in a day or so, but I was bedridden, Well when I told the doctor how serious it was, and that I couldn't walk and was bed ridden a lot , he said well you walked in here didn't you?

I said no actually I was met at the door  with a wheel chair and wheeled back here into this room.

He kind of said oh and shut up.

I think the main (generic) problem with doctors isn't that anyone who finishes med school is a doctor regardless of grades [8|] I think it's that doctors forget that *WE* (the patients) know our own bodies intrinsically better than they do. They don't live in our bodies, they don't feel what we feel. Sometimes I feel like they're taught in med school to disregard half of what the patient says as over-exaggerating. As someone who skips right to the point when I'm in the emergency room because I want the experience to be OVER, it's frustrating when you can clearly tell that they don't believe you on all points (or, even, when you can hear the supervising doctor tell the med student exactly which points were probably over-exaggerated and shouldn't be included on the chart. Funny that those were the *bigger* problems than what they DID include on the chart).

aravain -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/20/2009 7:11:05 PM)

Which emphasizes my point.

It's why I actually would wait on something (physical) that other people go to the ER for in order to get an appointment with my primary care doctor, which I can usually do next-day.

Recently the ER at my local hospital made it impossible for psychiatrists to directly admit patients to the psych ward, even doctors that actually WORK at the hospital, too! All patients for the psych ward MUST go through the ER and the entire process... which can take up to 20 hours... it usually takes at least 10.

Granted, it's the only public hospital in a crowded city left... but one would assume that if someone already had a primary care psychiatrist, they'd let them go directly to that ward.

Of course, they also made a similar policy for ALL wards. The only difference being if you're *in* the hospital for your appointment and need to be admitted.

There's cut-backs that I understand, and ones that I don't. In general the ones that I don't revolve around the fact that the patient is considered completely uninformed about their own body.

soul2share -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/21/2009 5:36:07 AM)

The marking of the body parts came about due to doctors actaully removing the wrong limb.....anyone remember the poor guy in Florida that had the WRONG leg removed a few years back?  Yeah, the family sued and all, but it didn't help the guy much...he still had the OTHER leg removed for the original problem!

Not ER related, but I had a similar experience with a dentist.....went to get a tooth pulled, the doc decided that HE didn't need the "stress" of dealing with w/a terrified patient....me, so he wrote a referral to an oral surgeon.  When he gave it to me, he pulled out the x-rays and told me that I had another tooth that probably needed attention too......it was the tooth I was there to have pulled....the idiot hadn't even looked at the x-rays!  Needless to say, I told him to shove his referral and ran out of the office as quickly as I could move!

Having worked in a hospital, and having seen the things that some people go to the ER for, I have no sympathy for the idiots who bitch about sitting for 6 hours to get a freakin' hang nail removed.  And also, yes, I've seen docs bounce drug seekers out the door...hell, they know them by sight and name.  They offer them Tylenol and then show 'em the door.

Both of those situations are wildly different from what I'm talking about, and two that I *do* understand. The idea that doctor *even if they work at the hospital* cannot admit someone to the psych ward directly is so alien to me. You don't believe my primary care psychiatrist when he says 'this guy is a danger to himself and others' even though he's also on your payroll? You need me to go through four levels of screenings, once with a general doctor (who really only oversees a med student), once with a psychiatry student, once more with a psychiatry resident, and finally with whoever the highest-up person in the psychiatry department is? Essentially they're asking for five opinions (two of which are technically not viable for committing to a psych ward anyways).

In the case of people who have non-emergency medical problems and only go to the ER for medical care... I understand that it does (and should) take a while to get them going through. But the problem comes when those of us who DO have insurance and primary care physicians that told us that our problem was an emergency and required the ER are put into the same track.

I have a cousin who doesn't have medical insurance... actually, she doesn't even technically have a residence. The only place that she can get healthcare for her OR her three children... is the ER. It's 'free' in that instance, and she gets the same priority when she has the sniffles, as someone who has a gash that will require many stitches.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/21/2009 11:31:07 PM)

LOL I have had dentists that sucked too, one guy decided I didn't need Novocain for a abscess,  he;s like I want you to try this with out Novocain, OK and if it's bad enough let me know and I was dumb enough to agree, and then when I kept trying to signal stop stop, you're hurting me he wouldn't stop and I had to grab his hand, and then he's like don't do that you could cause me to slip and hurt you.

It was like duh you're hurting me already.

One Dentist insisted I couldn't be in pain from the suction thinging causing my gums of my tooth to burn. I had to insist 4 times it was uncomfortable, stop I do not want you using that tool on me.

Much of the treatment you receive as a patient depends on the funding and staffing at the facility.  Ask other people in your community for their recommendations to  avoid the worst ones and find the better providers.

You do know there's 'immediate care' facility's all over the place right? Most do not require you to have insurance, and are considerably less than the ER. Personally I won't go to the ER unless I've got a life threatening injury... if more people followed this there'd be a hell of a lot less bs waiting time for people with actual issues.

susie -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/22/2009 8:46:02 AM)

I have found during my many times in hospital that the way you are treated has a lot to do with the way you behave and treat the staff.

I remember being on one ward where I thought the staff were fantastic and I received excellent care. During a visit my parents were speaking to a couple of other visitors who were complaing about the dreadful treatment the staff were giving to their relative. It seems taht a patients attitude to staff actually has a lot to do with it.

Vendaval -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/22/2009 11:12:22 AM)

Yes, you are spot on about attitude influencing how the staff treats the patient, susie.

I won't go unless someone I know with a medical background tells me to go...

but I agree.

And yeah, I know... but there isn't any that I know of that are in the same neighborhood (or that our bus system goes near). Not that it matters. I don't talk to her unless forced to.

Daddysgoodgirl02 -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/22/2009 8:34:41 PM)

The local ER here is plagued with people using the ER as a doctors office. I have had to go to the ER several times in the past year due to my heart condition/chest pains needing to be monitored. I just have to shake my head at family after family dragging in their ENTIRE brood of screaming kids plus whatever other family members or friends they can get to come with them, because the baby is collicky(sp?) or has a slight fever. It's absolutely unbelievable to me. There need to be some tougher regulations made for who can and cannot be treated in an ER it would take a lot of stress off the overwhelmed ER staff. I know that will never happen but SOMETHING needs to be done.

aravain -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/22/2009 9:05:50 PM)

part of the problem is that those same people have no other means of primary (or any) health care.

I agree though

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/23/2009 8:11:52 AM)

I agree  I personally feel that it's beyond rude, if a place is very busy, and there's very little chairs left, or the waiting room is tiny,  for a  bunch of people who have no business to do at the place, to pack into the seats. Seats should be left for people who're there trying to get some business attended to. Unless of course you're a mom there with her kids to be seen, or having a bunch of kids with you when only one is being seen can't be helped.

Lockit -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/23/2009 8:26:49 AM)

I can agree with most the post's on this thread in one way or another.  But have my own experience... where I am forced to believe they are not retarded... but are ignorant, neglectful, dangerous and abusive... when they don't understand something and don't take the time to understand it.

I can go in and be respectful... do I get that respect or even decent treatment?  Most of the time... no.  Try going in with an illness that isn't taught in the USA... try having a number of illness's that work against one another and ask them to read your medical reports to assure them that you do have reason to be there and avoid going there to the point of endangering yourself becasue you know going will be a 90/10 percent chance of really getting help but you must take that ten percent chance to try to get help.  Then have them read one page of info on the rare illness and think they know better than your years of research into it and still try to give you medication that will do harm to you, if they give anything at all.

We need a better medical system that protects the hospital's and patient's.  And we need some in the medical community to understand that protocal isn't always what is best for someone with illness's they cannot understand and if they don't understand it might be useful... and not all that time consuming to read the documents of one prepared for ignorance on their illness to assist them.

I remember when the medical community thought all with a strange illness and complaints about Aids and HIV were nothing more than person's who needed mental health care.  Garbage can diagnosis they call it.  Those patients were not treated well... until they started dying from their mental issues and people realized there was more to it... then few wanted to treat them.  There are other unknown illness's and garbage can diagnosis and to treat people as if they are the problem rather than admit there is more to the medical science than is known already... is abuse in my opinion.

HotFaerieMama -> RE: Are emergency room doctors retarded? (1/23/2009 8:27:32 AM)

i've only been to the ER once and it was because i had a large cut between my big toe and the one next to it on my left foot. they cleaned it and bandaged it and whatnot.. it seemed to take forever to heal... and yes i know its an odd place to get cut.. my brother had left the top ( which was metal) of some part of his stereo outside and upside down.. and had piled a bunch of wood on top ( we were roastin hotdogs) i was standing and walking on the wood not knowing what was underneath.. and out of nowhere i got cut.. and i walked to the front door and said " dad i cut my foot on something" he picked me up and he and a friend of his cleaned my foot up and when my mom got back ( she had been gone taking my brother to a friends house) she took me to the ER ....
