First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while
they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing and didn't get tested for
diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored
lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and
when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we
took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special
treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a water bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and NO ONE
actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, bread and butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it,
but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride
down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into
the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at
all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound,
no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat
rooms..........

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

WE HAD FRIENDS . . . we went outside and found them!

I received a message to give credit to the original author in My post, which I did not do and I apologize. The reason is that I do not know who the original author is. I received this in My email yesterday from a friend of Mine and thought you might enjoy it.

Sorry about that...

I was sitting here with too much free time on my hands this morning, so I decided to try to search the net to find the author. He's right, it seems to be just one of those little blurbs that made the rounds of the message boards and email forwards. There was no attribution to any author on any site I saw it on.

Why should there be any attribution? It's just a list of mundane truisms. If you think those observations are somehow profound, let me know so I can post some of my many pithy observations on "how it used to be, dammit".

You know, the first through fifth don't apply to me, but the last ten do. Sure I had the option to sit in my house and play video games. I just didn't want to. I was outside in the huge woods behind my house building forts and throwing rocks in the river until the farmer on the cliff across yelled at us to go away. I spent almost all my time outdoors and it was the most exciting time of my life. Things were magical. I miss that. Hence the "resolution" to spend more time outside this year. (By the way, I was born in 1983).

As a side note, good point about eating what we wanted as kids. A child should be outside running and playing enough that it doesn't matter if they have a cupcake now and then. Screw all this "low fat" chemically altered crap they have around these days. Screw fake eggs, fake milk, fake cheese, fake bacon. The way I see it, the powers that be made an egg whole for a reason. The same goes for milk, cheese, bacon, and a variety of other foods. It has to be healthier to eat whole foods than altered, valueless ones as long as you balance it out with vigorous activity and use certain foods in moderation. Ugh. And screw thin too. If I see one more self-starving, skin and bones fourteen year old girl I'm going to get her down and feed her a doughnut. Someone needs to tell these kids that skeletons aren't pretty.

Ugh. I used to only date skinny girls (and even married one). Now they do not do anything for Me. There is nothing to cuddle. Nothing to squeeze. Hugging them is like hugging a broom handle. You are afraid you are going to snap them like a twig if you give them a bear hug. It is a complete turn off. Not to mention that to most of them their idea of good sex is just lying there like a bump on a log while their partner does all the work.. BOOOOOOORRRING.

I like chubby girls. Mmmmm.

eww. thankfully, i don't have any eating disorders, so i don't have to worry about your sig line. twiggy and moss, interesting pair through the years, but did twiggy do coke, too? how about we offer them healthy food, like a tofu salad?

ya don't have to have an eating disorder to be thin, and you don't have to be thin to have an eating disorder, but you do have to be thin to be a dancer. go figure.

someone pass the cookies, please, and i'll have another helping of bananas foster, please. thank you.

Oh come on, you're healthy. Like I said, I meant the ones that starve themselves into some utterly unhealthy oblivion just to believe they look pretty. You're thin, but it's a good thing. You can tell that you take good care of yourself. I definitely don't want to get you down and feed you a doughnut. I bet we could sell tickets if I tried, though. It would be a good fight. We'd make a killing.

okay, but only if it's a krispy kreme glazed (warm). or maybe a raspberry filled one, but i really like the original ones...but the munchkins like the chocolate glazed with sprinkles so maybe that kind...but only one (or two). will we make enough to pay for the doughnuts?

Sorry hun, I was generalizing based on My experiences. That is all. I am quite certain they are not all like that.

Thsi is a little more toward the original post, but have you noticed parents really don't discipline their kids these days? I have found we have a slew of people 25 and under gravitating toward BDSM because they are fascinated by discipline. It is a new thing to them! There was evidently some hippie childrearing fad that started int he 80s that said you should never ever spank your kids! I am so glad my parents were whitebread 50s mindset hardasses!

I don't think it's a "hippie" thing, but I can understand that would be an easy interpretation to come up with. Why actually put any thought into something if you can come up with a quick and easily digestible scapegoat? All I can say is that many kids seem poorly disciplined nowadays. I don't think it matters whether the parents have hippie or redneck leanings. The kids are emulating their parents. The parents, in the US, anyway are, statistically speaking, morons. So why should we expect anything better from the kids?

Now, that said, I gotta say I do see good kids out there, and I do meet young adults who say they were taught to behave.....which does NOT require physical violence, by the way.

My dad beat the shit out of me, and my parents were careful to teach me to stay away from "niggers", "jews", "spics", and even Catholics.

Ah....for the good old days, eh?

Bob

Ooooohhh, raspberry filled. That's my favorite kind. And we'd totally make enough money to cover the doughnuts. I mean, how many horny guys contact you every week (whether you like it or not)? How many contact me (whether I cram my foot down their throats or not)? We'd probably be able to take a vacation to Fuji after our little bout of doughnut wrestling.
