Status: offline 		Alright, so I'm out of the military in about six months, maybe less with terminal leave. I'll be back in the States for the first time in two years, and completely free of the military and its restrictions for the first time in six and a half. What I want to do is just take a road trip, maybe two to three weeks of driving and sightseeing before getting into the civilian grind. What I'm asking of y'all is: what is there to do? I don't have a clue about what I'd like to do, or where to go, on this trip. Suggestions? Recommendations? Places to actively avoid? Please, let your fertile minds give me a hand in deciding on some courses.

After I got back from playing in Iraq for a year, I took 30 days of leave, jumped in my car, and just drove with no where in particular in mind. I would pull over and crash when I wanted to, get a hotel on occasion and just see the country. When it was all over, I got see New Orleans (pre-Katrina), see the the beaches on all 3 coast lines, see a broadway show, ect. In the end I traveled through 34 states and saw more things then I could count (most of then nothing particularly huge, but still glad I got to see them). Like yourself, I have about 6.5 years in right now and while I am planning on going career, I figure in a few more years, I will jump on a plane and do the same thing in Europe (always wanted to go). Status: offline 		My most favorite place I've ever lived is the northwest. Seattle and areas north are just beautiful if you like water, snow capped mountains and forests. Also the drive from San Francisco south on highway 1 along the ocean is amazing. I love road trips - have a blast!!

Status: offline 		I have had a few friends do this with a variety of plans--one wanted to see all the oddities in the counry--like the worlds largest bible, kind of thing, another one took the old Route 66----another picked a route and just followed it---I think something that should be on you trip is to see what's left of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans--but have fun and be safe, there is so much to see!

Status: offline 		I have no idea what kind of road trip you would like, but here is one that always satisfied me.

Step One: Get some close friends and tell tell them they have no choice but to go on a road trip with you. Tell them you know thousands of ways to inflict pain.

Step Two: Look up some of the weirdest things the US has to offer, and balance it out with some of the most beautiful. Go to see the world's biggest ball of twine and follow it up with Niagra Falls. Laughter and awe are a combination that never fail.

Step Three: Don't make a hardcore set schedule. Just flow with it. Everyone has a lot more fun.

If the ideas above fail to impress you, perhaps you would enjoy Asheville, North Carolina. It's a beautiful city with an awesome leather scene and some great BDSM shops. Also, the Pisgawah National Forest (No, I didn't spell that correctly. It sounds like Piss-Cah-Wah) is right outside the city. It's absolutely gorgeous. If you go take advantage of a little spot called Sliding Rock. It's a huge rock waterslide in the river that runs through the forest. It's awesome.

Good luck with your trip and your impending release from the military. I was never more happy than when I got myself out of the Army Reserves. Have an awesome time!

Also, thanks for the praise of my tag. Wish I could claim it as mine originally, but I stole it from www.ruminate.org. *grins* How's Jersey, by the way? I used to live up there, near Wayne, and might be resettling there for a bit to catch some employment.

GADomCpl, Thanks for sharing that memory, as well as Your well wishes, both are appreciated deeply. Good luck in the future, and who knows, after the military life maybe I'll have the pleasure of running into You and Your lovely co-Top sometime. I'd enjoy swappin' both in-service and out-of-service stories with the both of You. Hope You get to take that trip to Europe, I promise it's worth it. The Autobahn indeed kicks ass.

Shayna, thanks for your advice. I've always wanted to see San Fran, as well as the northwest. Closest I've come to enjoying it is spending a night at SeaTac in Seattle awaiting my flight over here. I've never road tripped before, so this'll be an experience to remember, I'm sure. Thank you again!

MHOO314, thank You for Your suggestions! N'Awlins is a mystery to me yet, but I definitely plan to visit there, and the sooner the better. Where I'm starting from places me right in the lower-middle of the country, so I'll have the freedom to travel in any direction. I like the idea of just driving randomly and letting karma direct me. NakedOnMyChain, all my close friends are Tops and Dom/mes, so my threats won't hold much water with them. *grins* Still and all, I'd love to be able to entice 'em along, as a companion or four can make for a great trip, I'm told. I'd indeed enjoy mixing some truly majestic sights like Niagara (I'm told) with the off-the-beaten-path sights you mention. Also, thanks for your time in the Reserves, Michelle. shigglyboom, I can honestly say that rafting is something I've yet to try, but have always wanted to. You recommend Jackson Hole, Wyoming? Consider me researching it. While I'm definitely a cityslut at heart, a bit of country would be a wonderful escape, and if I can't make rafting happen on this trip, I'm definitely going to in the future. Hope you're doing well in Vermont, I've never been that far northeast but I hear great things. Bon chance!

Status: offline 		I've done that a couple of times now. My trips have usually ended up lasting a month.
Just getting in the car with no specific direction in mind. Stopping when it felt like we should stop.
Got to see a lot of the US. Although none of us here can tell you the best places to see.
It's up to you and what you love about the world in general? If you love nature there are plenty of fabulous parks to check out. I'd be looking at those sort of destinations.

If you love night life...well then that is a bit different than the parks.

Beach, mountains or what?

The next time I take a trip I will be going to a mountain range. I owned a condo sitting right on the pacific ocean once. Loved the ocean up until I lived on it. Lost its luster real fast.
So, I sold it and bought a cabin in the mountains. Never regretted it since.
So, different strokes for different people. Choose yours and head out.

Status: offline 		If your trip includes the west coast, I'll suggest going by interstate 70 from Denver. First you get to climb up the east slope of the Rockies and go though the mountains, maybe stop to soak in the hotsprings at Glenwood Springs. Then when you get to central Utah you'll go through an area called the San Rafael Swell. This comes right after the town of Green River and there is something pretty cool about seeing a sign that says "Next Gas -- 70 miles".

The neat thing about the Swell is that it is the same rock in Canyonlands Nat'l Park, but they haven't bothered to make a park out of it. It is kind of mindblowing heading west at it because it was formed by something pushing that area up in a "bulge" so it looks like a solid red rock wall a few hundred feet high but the road goes through a crack in it. Once you climb up to the top of the swell you can zip through it at 75 mph gawking at the cool rock formations; also that section is the only Interstate Highway that I've been on that is just two lanes because there just ain't much traffic. There are a few exits to nothing but some dirt roads -- you can pull off and camp because it is all government land. So all that combined -- moonscape, no gas or any civilization and two lanes has a real primitive feel to it. And if you go through at night, pull off and look at the stars -- with the elevation there and the dry air it is pretty amazing.

Then after that you'll be in the general area to go to Las Vegas and get exactly the opposite experience.

Opera--nyc has the best at the met
Camping--a lot of this on a road trip
Hiking--this as well to see those things off the trail, like following lewis & clark in wyoming; realted to that, i highly recommend yellowstone national park. it's beautiful and has such amazing power, i was overwhelmed by it and plan to go back in spring (i was there in summer)
Rafting--can do this many places, including the west, midwest
Sailing--equally as warm to do this in the gulf of mexico as the pacific (southern calif or baja part, although the water is a bit warmer if you get down to cabo for surfing). you can rent a catamaran off mission bay in san diego, and also get sailboarding time in, too.
Surf Boarding--see above
Art Collecting--lovely art to see most anyplace, sometimes in the least likely ones
Americana--again, everywhere, but maybe moreso in the midwest just a tad
Blues--n'awlins at tippitina's, up the river to detroit. i don't know how much of the crescent city is built back; as of last month no public schools were open, so the main body of citizens weren't back yet. i can't imagine fat city as just a bunch of tourists in the quarter. avoid the graveyards with the above ground crypts; they used to be a haven for looters, and the quarter alone after 2-3am-ish used to be a not good place to be (they've always not talked about the amazingly high crime rate in that city; not good for tourism) but of all places i've ever lived, the city that care forgot was the most memorable. it's unlike anywhere else, or was. please report back how it's doing? also, on the drive from houston, there are some fine folk in carencro and la fayette. good food, good people.
gulf coast of florida is gorgeous, too, and not too crowded in the winter as are other places like daytona and orlando. they now call it the emerald coast for the clear waters and the sand dunes are white and incredible. largest land area base in the us is there so a lot of the beaches are pristine. no condos, no high rises. just beaches. can i come???
Paintball--i've no idea, but i'd imagine these are around.
Sky Diving--or gliding in a glider or hang gliding. for hang gliding, la jolla has a public park where you can rent one (la jolla/torrey pines area in north san diego county). gliding you can do east of orange county. sky diving, i'm sure again you can do it in southern california as well as other places.

i just took your "curious about" list and saw where you might do things on it. so if you're doing the gulf coast states, you might want to swing back to hit the southwest and down into baja mexico as well. new york and thereabouts would be good for some things but do mind the weather coming. you'll hit snow in the northeast and the northern midwest as well. timing i suppose, and good tyres.
