Because the metric system is superior, and far, far more precise [8D] .

*quick, a jump in a fire retardant suit*

No. Its due to the French only having ten fingers, so counting to a dozen remains difficult. [8D]

You noticed that too?

Yep funny eh?

Perhaps the Brits here should start insisting that Americans do things differently. I think you should be able to buy alcohol in supermarkets. Why don't you take a vote on it. Then you can be like us.      [:D]

Um, you can buy alcohol in supermarkets, have been for years. As far as these tedious fucking gun debates, who cares. Although Susie I will say you mentioned in the last gun thread why you had never heard a valid or an actual reason for someone to have to have one, and I relayed to you a very personal story of when my home was entered by drunken men in the middle of the night thinking I was gone on a trip, when in fact only my ex had gone and  I was home alone. I was sleeping on the couch, and had a loaded *of course handgun right on the endtable. That I do believe may have saved my life. Whatever it may or may not have done, you ignored it. Rhi also posted a personal story which you did not comment on either.  So I did get the feeling that even when you are given what you asked for, you still will not listen.

I am a liberal, I despise the NRA, I think if you want a gun go get one, if you don't, don't. My god, this gets old.

But Aynne, this thread was posted disingenuously, with the aim to prove that Britain somehows wants guns back, when the proof is that it doesn't; then some American posters argue that the Brits are somehow wrong for not wanting guns back (because they don't want school massacres). See? This also gets old...

RCdc -> RE: britain wants guns back (1/25/2009 12:41:13 PM)

What my question is - is why is the security in peoples houses in the USA (so it comes across in this thread) so piss poor that people can just seemingly walk and intrude in anway?

Oh I agree kittin, America is in such a fucking mess we have no business telling or purporting what anyone should do. I hate the whole hoo raa USA#1 jingoistic garbage too. Any country the elected Bush twice can probably shut up about dipsensing advice. I just think it is a personal choice, I don't need to justify why I need, hell, why I just want a handgun to anyone. Nor would I criticize another country for being far more anti-gun.

Men in Britian don't have the stregth to kick in a door? Seriously? Or smash a window? A criminal will find a way to get in, no matter what the security, for the most part. That is why they are criminals. They don't just walk in.

me too...life has been rocky. [:'(] catch up soon?

Back to the topic so we don't get in trouble... ;)

If Americans weren't so gun and crime happy I wouldn't have to have one, it is so typical, this ridiculous American way of doing things. No one actually wants to shoot an intruder, but here it is for me a necessity. A sucky one, but I feel better I guess.[8|]

kittinSol -> RE: britain wants guns back (1/25/2009 12:52:22 PM)

You know, I was interested to find out that New Hampshire is the safest state of the Union. People here never lock their doors: I've never seen anything quite like this. It's very nineteenfiftiesque.

Actually (now this may only be Britian) but the majority of household robberies are done by opportunistic thieves, they see and open window or notice no one locked the door etc. I remeber this from a program with that really annoying bald bloke who tells you how to make sure your house is secure. I really cant remember what it was called if anyone can that would be good.

Every try breaking double glazing - even with a brick?[:D]
Honestly, I just don't get the whole paranoia of people breaking in - this is simply an observation - but the majority from the US seem to be insisting that guns be used in self defense in break ins.  In the UK, we simply don't have that issue which is probably why we don't see the same urgency.  Yes break ins happen but most robberies happen with conmen tricking the elderly or vulnerable etc rather than a full on break in, or a larger property such as a public building, factories etc.

Aynne88 -> RE: britain wants guns back (1/25/2009 12:58:57 PM)

As the VP of a construction company I can attest that yes you can break a double glazed window with a brick. It is hard, but can be done. But where I am, Maine, there are a lot of old homes here that are easy as hell to break into. There is also a horrible economy, a huge drug problem, and desperation. Bad mix.

I really don't think it is paranoia, sadly I think it is reality. When I go to bed at night, I don't go to bed afraid, but I do lock the doors, I have a set of motion detector lights and I make sure I am "prepared."
