So true. The difference in schools over 50 years. 1959 vs. 2009 Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fight after school. 1959 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up mates. 2009 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it. Scenario: Jeffrey won't be still in class, disrupts other students. 1959 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good caning by the Headmaster. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again. 2009 - Jeffrey given huge doses of Valium and Lithium. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability. Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbour's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt. 1959 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normally, goes to uni, and becomes a successful businessman. 2009 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. Psychologist tells Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy's Mum has affair with psychologist. Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school. 1959 - Mark shares aspirin with Headmaster. 2009 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons. Scenario: Pedro fails high school English. 1959 - Pedro gets extra tuition, passes English, goes to Uni. 2009 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. Class action lawsuit filed by anti discrimination director against Education Dept and Pedro's English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English. Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers, puts them in a model aeroplane paint bottle, blows up an ant bed. 1959 - Ants die. 2009 - Local police called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, parents investigated, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny's Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again. Scenario: Johnny falls while running during morning break and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him. 1959 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing. 2009 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in prison while Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Scenario: Junior is out hunting all weekend, and goes strait to class Monday morning, his shotgun in the back of his pick-up truck 1959 - Kids gather round to see shotgun. Principle talks to Junior about hunt and gets his shotgun out of his truck, to compare. 2009 - Police called, SWAT team arrives. Johnny arrested and put on terror watch, newspapers report on 'Fast action by local police derail potentail school shooting', counslers brought in for trauma counsleing for students - including several who never saw the gun, have never seen A gun, and don't know Junior.

Scenario : Junior falls out of a treehouse and breaks his arm. 1959 They help him to his feet, take him in the house and start trying to call someone, an adult family member. Junior gives them the phone numbers, they take him to the doctor and he gets a cast. Everybody gets together later to chew the fat. 2009 911 is called, for an ambulance, however three police cruisers, a SWAT team, a neurologist, a city inspector and a tree surgeon arrive. Once the media gets wind of it, all the trees in the city are cut down. City council enacts legislation against treehouses. Junior's Parents collect $6.7 million in a lawsuit. Junior becomes a lawyer. (I can see how this can go pretty far, keepem coming) Nice thread FourQ, I think it has real potential. T

Cheers T. I posted it to point out the differences in British schooling, which was far more "old school" than the American counterparts. If you're thinking about American 1959 schools, try thinking back to 1859 for a real comparison. [;)]

You forgot to add: Johnny also charged with cruelty to animals. PETA conducts protest outside Johnny’s home. Also, concerning guns and school: My family owns an old schoolhouse (built in the 1880’s) in a rural area. Researching its past we discovered that the schoolhouse had a gun rack inside it for the students to store their guns during the day. They brought guns with them in the hopes of, while walking to and from school, providing their family with some meat for the dinner table, or perhaps some lunch for themselves. Boys were also expected to chop wood for the wood burning stove and girls were expected to help the teacher clean the schoolhouse. Oh yeah, students thirteen and over were allowed to smoke during breaks and lunch, spittin’ tabbacy, however, was only allowed outside.

Scene: Kitten goes to school and a boy grabs her behind she turns around and smacks him in the face 1959 : kitten is scolded for hitting a boy by the principal, and then spanked when she gets home by her father 2009: kitten gets praised for stopping a sexual harasser, and boy gets a suspension... (Ya know it wasnt ALWAYS better in 1959....)

I don't know, hopeless. I regularly slapped boys for grabbing my 'rack' pretty regularly. normally, Dad got called into the principles office. Dad would say, 'Let me see if I understand this. A boy in your school touched my daughter without her permission, and she slapped him? Good job, Girl. Let's go home.'

my aunt regularly did it and was often spanked by the principle then by my dad when she got home because it wasnt -proper- of a lady, she was supposed to tell her brothers and let them be violent.

In 2009 kitty and the boy would probably both be suspended due to 'zero tolerance' for both violence and sexual harrassment.

Noted, also someone during this era of enlightenment someone figured out to suspend them for cutting school. Dweebs, I used to LOVE getting suspended from school. T

I went to a Catholic high school and there if a boy put his hands in the wrong place Sister Mary (the vice principle and the head of dicipline - she looked like a cross between and Sherman tank and a pit bull) made the offender spend the day wearing a "Roman Hands" sign and all the girls had permission to give him one good smack during that day. As you might expect, grab ass was a rare offnce in our school.

You'd think the dumb-asses would eventually figure that out. At my school all suspensions were in school and you spent the day doing janitorial work. Imagine to walking into a class - one you would normaly be attending - with a bucket and mop.
