One has to use one's body weight rather than hand/arm strength to use strong pressure and yet still make it "hurt so good". Windchymes, don't go to a school and expect to get a good massage. It does happen, but not often. As in most things, experience counts and you get what you pay for.

Damn, y'all have me SO wishing I could afford a masseuse! [:o] I think that life in general is wired to run in a sadomasochistic manner. For example: Want to be slim, and therefor socially acceptable? All you have to do is spend all your time exercising, which sucks, and eating foods that don't taste good. Want to take a drug that will let you disconnect all your pain? Well, it'll work for a little while, but in order to have it keep working you'll have to keep increasing the dosage until it shuts down your central nervous system and you die. Want to take any one of a number of drugs to provide various other sensations? They ALLLLL got side effects, and most of 'em'll kill ya. Have fun. Want to succeed and be able to relax and be happy? all you need to do is work your ass off, which sucks. It's all a rich tapestry.

The dentist, but not for reasons you'd think. Novocaine doesn't work very well on me. I went through a process not so long ago of having my mercury fillings removed and replaced with porcelain ones. This meant drilling and the like, which meant Novocaine, which meant I'd have enough pain to make me hit the dentist (some dental pain I love...drilling into my teeth isn't one of them). So my doc tells me to avoid caffeine a couple of days beforehand, since caffeine can negate the effects of Novocaine. I'm not a happy or kind person without my morning coffee, and so I'd forget, have my coffee, show up, and "Whoops, sorry doc, need another shot." (This process took about 4 visits). One morning I showed up, groggy and grumpy, as I obeyed the instructions and went three full days without my sacred java. I lie back in the chair, the dental hygenist tilts the chair back, and I wait. A few minutes later, here comes Mr. Dentist Man, with a HUGE cup of coffee. He sits down next to me and waves it under my nose, saying "Mmmmmmmm.....COFFEEEEEEE......." He does stuff like that to me all the time. Once with his hands working deep inside my mouth, he tells me about working in the yard so much, for the life of him he couldn't get all the dirt out from under his nails. [8D]

NuevaVida---- Sounds like time for a new dentist!!! My dentist is a merciful soul; he gives me nitrous, much nitrous and tells me to be liberal with the valium and anti-inflammatories before and after visits. Dental work is still an agony but less-so. OneMoreWaste----While as Cjan said, schools don't generally offer the best massage opportunities, itis less expensive than a practitioner who is fully trained and experienced. Treat yourself sometime! And, I agree that there's a fair bit of S&M inthe world; perhaps it has to do with that Freudian sex and death/eros and thanatos urge we all have?! Well, as some have suggested in another thread, there's always the Massage Envy chain...the WalMart of massage therapy. At least it's more affordable to many, and beats a massage school since ME therapists at least have some experience.
