For the "Old-timers" (Like Me!) THRILLED that I'm not going through it all in these times of lawyers, "psycho"Anal-ists (that's the way I wanted to spell it!), government "protection", and "it's not my fault" parenting.

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in icepack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) Instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then
Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got butt spanked again when we got home.

I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that we needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

Yeah...life was so much better back then...LOL...I sure wouldn't want to go back to those days.

Sounds like you lived through a lot of the same crap I did, but just didn't give a shit about any of it. Finding the humor in adversity is a very healthy adaptation.

smiles...i remember common sense, very well. not to mention personal responsibility!

i also remember watching an hour of cartoons on Saturday morning, and leaving the house....to stay outside all day, until called in at dusk...*gasps* i must have been abused and neglected?

If children were weapons, Jason would have banned by international treaty. Jason had doting parents and an attention span of minus several seconds, except when it came to inventive cruelty to small furry animals, when he could be quite patient. Jason kicked, punched, bit and spat. His artwork had even frightened the life out of Miss Smith, who could generally find something nice to say about any child. He was definitely a boy with special needs. In the view of the staffroom, these began with an exorcism.

I remember those good ol' days, too, but I think things must have been different where I grew up. Those days weren't really all that good. But selective memory could make them seem so, I suppose. Myths are cool, but I don't think we should take them too seriously. I also think it's worth mentioning that myths reflect the values of those who tell them.

Damn...this is a pretty unhumorous post, isn't it?

depends on your point of view........ and the only reason i miss those time was because i didnt have to worry about nothing but having fun and getting my ass spanked.......... didnt have to worry about cell phones or none of that.

I hear that, Dame. I don't understand why it's so important to be yakking on the phone all the time. I also don't have a burning need to have my "tunes" with me at every moment of every day. I'd rather take the time to sit down and actually listen to something than have it constantly playing as the soundtrack of my life.

you mean i was supposed to sue everyone just because my munchkins got hurt or sick, even it it was done intentionally by the neighbor, the school, or some big corporation? dang, i'm slow. oh well, i'll just have to be poor and lawsuit-less.

back when i was a young'un, i didn't get salmonella poisoning, but it may have to do with how the birds were housed back then. more people ate cows than chicken. now i am very susceptible to getting sick from chicken, even got sick while i was pregnant, but again, didn't sue anyone. sheesh, all those poor attorneys i kept from eating!

as Bob pointed out, there were good things in the past and bad. we went through different things than our young'uns have, and different than theirs will. we didn't have to worry about aids, keeping our tonsils, and so much more. we had the old governor wallace, lestor maddox, a lack of integration (sorry, i lived it; it didn't happen like in the books) and other ills. it's all just relevant.

or i think it was.

I hear that bob....... i hear that big time. I mean these kids today have got everything we never have. and yet i am not envious. i still love to sit down and smell the roses on a quiet peaceful day with birds chirping and the sounds of nature all around. I enjoy the slow walks through the woods just to enjoy the peace and quiet. YES i love music have music going quite a bit when im at home working on my computer as background noise unless its a gorgeous day and i can have my windows open to listen to natures music. I still love getting my hands dirty in the mud. Even if i have more life responsibilities than i did when i was a child. Kink of the mountain anyone?? ROFL

girly4you2 it is never like the books say. they only give you half truths and bullshit....... what the goverment wants you to hear not what really happened.

i do remember cicadas and fireflies, though. i miss those. i'm with you in the dirt and the mud. there is a silent beauty in nature and growing living things that so many don't bother to stop and enjoy.

sometimes i don't answer phones for days.
