MissMorrigan -> RE: 2008 Oscar nominees are ... (1/23/2009 5:23:38 AM)

I'm not sure why some people have an instant reaction to the mention of Clint Eastwood and immediately assume, without having actually seen the film, that it's an instant rehash of his Dirty Harry films... those were buried a long time ago. I also thought Gran Torino was deserving of a 'Director' nominee. Ledger's portrayal was good in the Dark Knight, as were the other actors' portrayals in that film - none of which, in my opinion, were Oscar-worthy. The only reason (I believe) that there was such a buzz was due to all the hype onset regarding Ledger's methodology which was then subsequently leaked to the media who then ran with it as they tend to do. For me to see Revolutionary Road again I'd have to be tied down with my eyes forced open. Should such an unlikely scenario occur, it will be the only time I've slept with my eyes open. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - was a superb story, kept me enchanted throughout but I did not see Pitt's role as Oscar-worthy, although agree with nominations for Cinematography, Writing and Art Direction - both were excellent. Gran Torino should have received nominations Slumdog Millionaire - I hope wins in all nominated categories Defiance should have received more than 'Music' nominees - profound tale of human endurance/determination. quote:

Ledger's portrayal was getting Oscar buzz while it was still shooting. He would still have been nominated if he hadn't died, but he probably wouldn't have won (about 99% chance he's going to win haha). As for his body of work, while he did make a lot of shitty teen films, his later work (Brokeback Mountain, I'm Not There, etc) was fucking brilliant. He was one of the very few talented actors in his demographic. The Wrestler is a good movie, but really hard to watch. The only nomination anyone thought Gran Torino would get was best actor for Clint Eastwood, and from what I've heard, it's pretty much just "Dirty Harry growls at asian kids to get off his lawn." While it's a great character, he's done it a jillion times before and really didn't deserve the nomination. Well I thought Brokeback Mountain was dreadful. It was a chore to stay awake through that yawnfest. Like I said, I enjoyed The Dark Knight. It was entertaining, and it was certainly better than most of these overly done comic book superhero movies. But it didn't strike me as brilliant. Gran Torino is not a reincarnation of Dirty Harry by any means. Eastwood did a really good job with the characters in the story, and he delved a lot more deeply into the main character's mind than he ever did with Dirty Harry.
