What sort of marks do you want? And the corollary: what sort of pain do you want? For deep but specific thud and bruises, use a shower curtain rod--less than $20 at Home Depot. Get the shortest one, practice a bit, and use it like a tip-heavy cane. Or, depending on how deep you want the sensation to go, use both hands and swing it overhead and down. "Real" canes are also a good choice--go for three-eighths of an inch rattan for a lovely sting that's a few layers deep and leaves red welts when an area is hit once, purple when hit twice. Half-inch canes are good too--a little more purple, a little greater depth and rigidity. A friend swears by delrin canes for marking hard-to-mark people, but I think rattan is superior in sensation, control, and marking--you just need to get the right size and practice a bit. Also look into heavy, dense wood paddles--cocobola and bloodwood can be nice. Do you want tiny, insect-bite-like sting? I second the evil stick (a fiberglass rod that can be bent back onto itself and snapped at the victim and also used as a cane--especially good for genital and nipple torture) for sensations, but I haven't found it marks well unless it breaks the skin. Consider learning to use a singletail--as you grow advanced, you can vary the type and intensity of sensations at will, from a sting like the evil stick to a cutting sensation to a sensation like a fairly thin, perhaps quarter-inch cane. If these don't work, there's always cutting with a knife. Even fairly light scratches will scab over like a papercut and last several days. Good luck! Monica
