Vendaval -> Improved air quality linked to longer life spans (1/27/2009 4:09:35 PM)

Some good health news regarding air pollution improvements and increased life expectancy was recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

"Drop in U.S. air pollution linked to longer lifespans"

"Long-term exposure to dirty air -- specifically, the tiny specks known as fine-particulate air pollution -- shortens lives and contributes to cardiovascular and lung disease. Particulate matter is inhaled almost like a gas and is thought to hike blood pressure, heart attack risk, and the chance of heart disease-related death.

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommends that heart patients avoid driving for two to three weeks after leaving the hospital to avoid pollution (and stress). Other research has suggested that a nonsmoker living in a polluted city has about the same risk of dying of heart disease as a former smoker.

Gas and diesel engines, coal-fired plants, steel mills, smelters, refineries, and other industrial processes involving burning at high temperatures produce these particles, which are no bigger than 2.5 microns across -- or about one-fortieth the diameter of a human hair. "Those are the ones that can penetrate deeply into the lungs and cause most of the health problems," says Pope.

The Clean Air Act of 1970 set nationwide air quality standards and motor-vehicle emissions standards for the first time, and the federal government and some states have continued to take steps to tackle air pollution."

How fortunate for us then that Bush scuttled the Clean Air Act of 1970 with the "Clear Skies Initiative" of 2002, which placed economic growth over environmental progress by (among other things) allowing 42 million more tons of pollution emitted than the EPA proposal and delaying enforcement of smog-and-soot pollution standards until 2015.

'Soot' being the fine-particulate air pollution mentioned above.

Heckuva job, Bushie!

(so why does the CNN article mention a drop in air pollution, you ask?  Because the study was from the period 1980-2000.)

in my opinion i think this is how my immune system being so fucked up over active or under active there was something in the air which triggered the sarcoidosis i have

and yes anyone can get it and not have any problem but others like myself get it and then it is dormant and then years later something triggers it

they are doing paperwork for submittal to the national transplant to put me on the list for a double lung transplant and potentially a heart transplant

i just keep thinking this is gonna be a hell of a e ticket ride (referring to disneyland when it opened up) and would definetly like to have an out of body experience

also the lungs are the most fragile of all organs and when the are harvested (of course the person has to be dead who is donating them) only last 6 hours

so in all practical circumstances i will be dead when they take my lungs out of my body (aint it great)

so does anyone want to trade places with me

go to the foundation for sarcoidosis research to learn more

u can google it

Damn that "Bush"

How dare he worry about jobs and the economy. [X(]

I guess everybody needs to go back up into the trees, all this technology is killing us

And yet he managed to fuck those up too.

And you support this loser?

Can`t have jobs or an economy if the globe burns up.

Neo-cons will always give us the false choice between a healthy economy and a healthy environment.Don`t listen, they don`t know what they`re talking about.

I wonder if the neo-conservatives are aware that the economy is already in the tank and that people blame them for it.

I`m not sure they have any credibility on the subject or people paying attention to what they`re saying.

too bad he wrecked the country.   alot of damage on his watch....

Owner59 -> RE: Improved air quality linked to longer life spans (1/27/2009 9:16:19 PM)

That`s a good point.

bush dropped or did`t enforce most of the clean air, clean water, clean soil rules, basically letting the major polluters run amok.

Every fine levied on a power plant or industrial polluter for breaking already existing laws, magically disappeared when bush took office. This sent a single to all polluters that the sky was the limit and they didn`t have to worry.

He gave polluters every advantage and edge,at the expense of our environment, letting us breath, drink and eat more toxins and heavy metals.

His excuses were lame lines like he didn`t want to give our economic rivals a competitive edge.

And for what, after all that?

The economy is still in the tank.

Oh nice, so now instead of dying at 83 and having a good life we can go for another ten years probably in a nursing home eating baby food!
Fuck that!
I want the cops chasing me at 83!
I want to do a bank robbery at 83!
I want to be fucking someone elses' girlfriend at 83!
I want to be slapping guys in their 60's around when I'm 83!
I want them to be strapping me in the electric chair for killing 50 politicians in Washington when I'm 83!
THAT's the way to go!
Another tens years, for what?
Fuck clean air!

Some "scientific studies" result in new discoveries that advance humankind.  Some "scientific studies" result in the advance of a political agenda.  I don't think anyone has any doubt that cleaner air should be a benefit to life expectancy.  Given genetics has something to do with life expectancy, someone working on a farm in Iowa should live a longer, healthier life than a coal miner in West Virginia.  People living in Switzerland should live longer lives than those living in Somalia.  I would think that in addition to air quality improvement over the the period of this study, outstanding advances in medical diagnosis and screening from CatScans to PetScans, less invasive surgery, new drugs for chemo, blood pressure regulation and numerous others, as well as improved agriculture.

The point is that numerous defined factors contribute to longevity. Rather than throw a $100 billion into windmills, we should encourage drilling for oil and allow public utilities to build nuclear power plants, at no expense to the government by the way, to lessen our dependence on Mideast oil, and put the money into drug research for cancer, cardiac and other terminal disease.
The money goes where the political influence is greatest, and the drug industry is personna non grata...Climatology is where it's at these days.  I kid you not....if I had young children I would tell them to look into Climatology as a profession, a growth industry backed with a billions and billions dollars of government (read taxpayer) money...

If there is any real basis for this, great, glad to hear it, I hope it was worth the money spent to clean up the emmisions. Generally the AHA tends to skew most of the statistics they use, to support whatever their selected cause is at the particular time, so pardon me if I don't get too excited about this breaking news.

Your DNA determines your lifespan. Mother nature can and has  polluted the planet more than we can.
