Some "scientific studies" result in new discoveries that advance humankind. Some "scientific studies" result in the advance of a political agenda. I don't think anyone has any doubt that cleaner air should be a benefit to life expectancy. Given genetics has something to do with life expectancy, someone working on a farm in Iowa should live a longer, healthier life than a coal miner in West Virginia. People living in Switzerland should live longer lives than those living in Somalia. I would think that in addition to air quality improvement over the the period of this study, outstanding advances in medical diagnosis and screening from CatScans to PetScans, less invasive surgery, new drugs for chemo, blood pressure regulation and numerous others, as well as improved agriculture. The point is that numerous defined factors contribute to longevity. Rather than throw a $100 billion into windmills, we should encourage drilling for oil and allow public utilities to build nuclear power plants, at no expense to the government by the way, to lessen our dependence on Mideast oil, and put the money into drug research for cancer, cardiac and other terminal disease. The money goes where the political influence is greatest, and the drug industry is personna non grata...Climatology is where it's at these days. I kid you not....if I had young children I would tell them to look into Climatology as a profession, a growth industry backed with a billions and billions dollars of government (read taxpayer) money... http://www.ametsoc.org/pubs/careers.html
