Alcohol in it's myriad flavours is a poison, yet we drink it, but why ? Why does it seem some of us need to drink alcohol, what do we get from it, what is it that is so attractive ? Are you drinking alcohol now, do you post under the influence of alcohol, do you think it affects your thoughts in posting ? Would you like to be rid of it ??

Hic.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Alcohol (1/28/2009 3:28:15 PM)

I am a lush; I love booze [8D].  I'm drinking a beer right now.  I drink it because I enjoy it.  Yes, I can and have acted like a complete jackass under the influence.  But I am not violent or dangerous when I drink.  I can get a little obnoxious and loud when I have had too much.  But generally, I control myself.

I have came home and posted under the influence; I admit it.  No I don't want to be rid of it.  I'm responsible; I don't drink and drive (never had a DWI charge).  I don't drink dangerous amounts of alcohol, and I don't mix alcohol with other drugs.  In fact, I am very weary of taking any kind of drug.  I have to be in serious pain to take a pain killer.

Now, what is the point of this post Anerin?

Yum!

And to answer the OP.........because it tastes good. Besides, I read somewhere that red wine is good for you. [:)]

kittinSol -> RE: Alcohol (1/28/2009 3:35:55 PM)

Well, it's good for you in certain quantities. Over a glass a day, latest research shows, and you enter dangerous territory, if you're female (we did badly at the genetics lottery when it comes to alcohol tolerance). But look at the age expectancy in France, and at the quantity of red wine the frogs drink: there's a direct correlation there... Donc, à votre santé, M'sieur Dame [8D] .

domiguy -> RE: Alcohol (1/28/2009 3:37:03 PM)

I enjoy having a few drinks.  Just picked up two six packs of Bell's Hop Slam....If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up ...Ferris Beuhler's Day Off.

When it comes to beer I am definitely a hop head. Otherwise, alcohol much like food, I have a very open and diverse palate and can appreciate many different tastes.

Love the slight burn and warming feeling of alcohol as it is consumed.  At times, I like the overall sensation.

Don't hang with those that alcohol alters their essence...They just kill my buzz. Those fucking buzz kills.

I go for days, weeks even, without any. Then I get in the mooooood and crack open a bottle.

Then there is tawny port. Orgasm in a glass.

Aneirin -> RE: Alcohol (1/28/2009 3:41:07 PM)

Red wine is good for us, that I know, a glass does no harm depending of course on the size of the glass. But what it is in red wine that is good for us can be got be drinking non alcoholic red grape juice. I understand the need for the alcoholc content, the relaxation and feeling of contentment, the ability to forget, but are our lives so stressful that we need to forget, or is it just an excuse to drink ourselves out of our normal mind.

Why does it seem we need to get out of our normal mind

LaTigresse -> RE: Alcohol (1/28/2009 3:44:16 PM)

I usually don't like to have enough to really get out of my normal mind. (With a certain herb being the one exception........) I prefer to remain aware and steady. Even the afor mentioned herb, I am really weirdly picky about where and who with. I have to be in a really calm "safe" place.

domiguy -> RE: Alcohol (1/28/2009 3:47:33 PM)

who said anything about the ability to forget?

That would take a shit load of booze going down the gullet.   There are some times where I wish I would have drank a little more.  No fun crawling out of bed in the dark and leaving behind your precious undies and socks just to make an escape before it awakes.

Haven't done that in ages.  God I need a drink.

You know, that particular herb makes me paranoid.  I ran into some old high school buddies on New Years Eve.  I was at the store, and I wasn't doing anything.  So they invited me to a party.  I went over there, and they were partaking of that herb.  I declined.  Everytime I partake of that herb; it makes my chest hurt, makes my heart rate speed up, and it make me paranoid.  I just don't like it.

Port is a voluptuous drink. It's sweet and tender... so GOOD with blue cheese. Yummy.

REALLY boring article from webmd.com, but still, a few basics never do any harm...

Do Like the French?

The French diet is often used as an example of how wine can improve heart health. The French have a fairly high-fat diet but their heart disease risk is relatively low. And some have attributed this to red wine.
But there are so many differences between the lifestyle of the French and Americans from their activity levels to the foods they eat. You cannot isolate red wine as the magic bullet for disease prevention says Alice Lichtenstein, DrS, Gershoff Professor at Tufts University.

Choose whichever alcoholic beverage you enjoy, drink it in moderation and try to have it with meals, advise Lichtenstein and Eric Rimm, DrS, a Harvard researcher.

Arthur Agatston, MD, cardiologist and creator of the popular South Beach diet, encourages patients who enjoy alcohol to also drink it with meals.

"Alcohol can stimulate the appetite so it is better to drink it with food. When alcohol is mixed with food, it can slow the stomach's emptying time and potentially decrease the amount of food consumed at the meal," asserts Agatston. His alcohol of choice is red wine due to the antioxidant resveratrol. However, he agrees that any alcohol in limited quantity will provide the same health benefit.

There is a misperception that red wine is abundant in antioxidants. "It does contain some, but they are not always well absorbed. If you want antioxidants, you are better off eating a spinach salad with vegetables than drinking a glass of red wine," Rimm tells WebMD.

Lower Your Cholesterol

Alcohol also can have a very powerful effect and increase HDL "good" cholesterol by 20% if used moderately and in the context of a healthy diet along with regular physical activity, says Rimm. Higher HDL levels are linked to lower risks of heart disease.

"The research evidence points to ethanol, or the alcohol component, of beer, wine, or spirits as the substrate that can help lower cholesterol levels, increase 'good' HDL cholesterol," he says.

(And my absolute fave:)

Boost Your Brain

A recent study shows a boost in brain power for women who enjoy a little alcohol. The study, published in the Jan. 20 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, evaluated more than 12,000 women aged 70-81. Moderate drinkers scored better than teetotalers on tests of mental function. Researchers found a boost in brainpower with one drink a day. Moderate drinkers had a 23% reduced risk of mental decline compared with nondrinkers.

Benjamin Franklin had several famous quotes about wine and beer-

"There cannot be good living where there is not good drinking."

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

"Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance"

"Take counsel in wine, but resolve afterwards in water."

Same here - never did a thing for me.  Damn it.  lol

But give me a few drinks, and I'm a happy girl.  It relaxes me from the normal everyday stresses and worries.  It tastes yummy if mixed right.  A large glass of chardonnay or zinfandel makes me very hapy and fuzzy.  I sleep well after having oen glass.  I'm at the point in my life now where everything feels like a huge responsibility and I'm going under with it sometimes - this just takes the edge off so I can remember how it felt to be footloose 'n fancy free.

That being said, my limit is 3 drinks - otherwise I'm sleeping on the sofa and not having much fun.

DarkSteven -> RE: Alcohol (1/28/2009 5:26:20 PM)

I guess I'm in the minority.  I am a complete nondrinker except for the pittance of wine I drink when I attend Friday night services.

It's not anything serious - I just never developed a taste for alcohol.
