The US Postal Service may cut down mail delivery from 6 to 5 days a week.  Postage is schedule to increase again in May and the USPS has already trimmed salaries and laid off workers.

"Postmaster General: Mail days may need to be cut"

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, Associated Press Writer Randolph E. Schmid, Associated Press Writer – Thu Jan 29, 2:41 am ET

"WASHINGTON – Massive deficits could force the post office to cut out one day of mail delivery, the postmaster general told Congress on Wednesday, in asking lawmakers to lift the requirement that the agency deliver mail six days a week. If the change happens, that doesn't necessarily mean an end to Saturday mail delivery. Previous post office studies have looked at the possibility of skipping some other day when mail flow is light, such as Tuesday.

Faced with dwindling mail volume and rising costs, the post office was $2.8 billion in the red last year. "If current trends continue, we could experience a net loss of $6 billion or more this fiscal year," Postmaster General John E. Potter said in testimony for a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs subcommittee.

Total mail volume was 202 billion items last year, over 9 billion less than the year before, the largest single volume drop in history."

they may as well.

when was the last letter- personal letter that you have mailed?

I use the USPS all the time for both business and personal correspondence.

fed ex and UPS offer better service.  maybe they should manage the post office.

you're suggesting they outsource the USPS?

Granted, it's outsourcing to other US companies... but, really?

If it'll save more jobs, cut down a day. That's more important to me than anything else.

I'm all for no mail on Saturdays--it was that way when I was a kid in the days when we had to use the mail and we survived. Count me in on this one!

I pay all my bills online. I mail my rent payment once month - 12 stamps a year. I do still receive several bills via mail. Junk mail has kept the USPS afloat for years but even that has slowed a lot in recent years.

I use it on occasion - family birthday cards; Christmas cards; a few monthly bills; notices from the kids' schools.  I'd imagine mostly businesses using daily mail keeps the USPS operating.  I don't see the harm in cutting Saturday delivery.

USPS has been a Bad idea for a LONG LONG LONG time.
It needs to be turned over to a private company.
the feds have lost money for ever on this dog, time to shoot it and put us out of its misery.

I use it and most people I know use it. Right now we are waiting for a letter from my boy who is in the military.

I couldn't disagree more.

To me it's one of the most quintessentially 'American' qualities of the USA. I agree that it needs reform, but I honestly think that taking it out of the government's hands would be a very wrong way to go about it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind them cutting down to as few as mail delivery 3 times a week, even only 2 days with the option to go in and pick up mail on days it's not delivered. I try to use USPS whenever I can, even if it costs me more. It's a matter of pride, as well as direct economic stimulation, in my case.

But I *also* use the mail service. I don't receive much, really, however I *DO* send out, and quite often (at least, moreso than others my age).

E-mail is killing the postal service. We only need it delivered 5 days a week. 95% of the mail you get is junk mail anyway.

popeye1250 -> RE: US Postal service may cut services (1/30/2009 10:45:44 AM)

But, if they're losing money shouldn't they be paying out tens of $Billions of dollars in "bonuses" like Wall Street?

pahunkboy -> RE: US Postal service may cut services (1/30/2009 2:00:43 PM)

they float this idea a few  times over the years.

we are suppose to say- oh no-- not that.   then they announce a stamp increase, after faking a larger needed increase and then somehow everyone is happy.

this time tho- I think the public is going to say- yeah shut down a day.

note- fuel came down in price.  so there should be a cushion....

MichiganHeadmast -> RE: US Postal service may cut services (1/30/2009 2:02:01 PM)

It will only affect Netflix delivery, and I can live an extra day without it.
