Archer -> Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 1:48:29 PM)

Now is not the time for profit?????

“There will be time for them to make profits, and there will be time for them to get bonuses. Now is not that time.”

Not what one would expect from the great speaker Obama.

Yes it's a flubed line spoken without benefit of the teleprompter feed. At least I sure as hell hope it was.

Sanity -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 1:51:32 PM)

That's not a flubbed line Archer, I'm sure he really believes that.

We all need to make sacrifices - everyone except for him, of course.

T1981 -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 1:57:56 PM)

You mean a single man actually made a mistake while speaking?!

STONE HIM! BURN HIM AT THE STAKE! TOSS HIS UNWORTHY ASS TO THE WOLVES! STRIP HIM OF HIS RANK AND THROW ROTTEN TOMATOES AT HIM! CHAIN HIM TO THE WALLS AND BEAT HIM!

(okay, I'll volunteer for that last part. I'm no Domme, but let's face it, Obama's HAWT!)

I really don't see where stating that the overpaid CEO's and corporate greed shouldn't be a priority is a bad thing....Maybe ya'll have tons of money squirrelled away, but I don't.

Archer -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:08:40 PM)

the problem is the "flub" speaks directly to an attitude feared by many that he was denying (socialism).

The man said now, while we have high unemployment and a recession going on, is not the time for profits which is the only way to get out of a recession and create more jobs.

YoursMistress -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:10:14 PM)

If we could ensure that none of our corporations turned a profit this year, I suspect that the resulting boom in the stock market would be felt worldwide.  (ok maybe a crash not a boom, but what's in a word?)

yours

....individuals will read whatever they want, without regard to the actual words sometimes.....i read that as 'this is not the time for bonuses'.
How come you missed that potential meaning?

T1981 -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:12:07 PM)

Wait, wait, wait -

you really believe that telling people corporate greed (which is what many of the corporations have been doing) is wrong is socialism? You really believe that saying that making record breaking profits by slashing jobs and mismanaging money (which is how many corporations have made those profits) is socialism?

Check your dictionary again. In the great words of Inigo Montoya, "I do not think that word means what you think it means."

kittinSol -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:13:06 PM)

I fail to see how else to read that line than as to mean "now is not the time for them to get bonuses" . Except, of course, if one has a partisan, divisive agenda [8|] .

So you think it is acceptable that these executives received $18 billion in bonuses, the same amount they received in 2006, after taxpayers funded a massive bailout?

housesub4you -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:16:10 PM)

That is how I read it, I mean he was speaking about the billions in bonus's the banks took from the taxpayer's money.

As for the socialism comment, It was after all former President Bush who stood before this country and spoke about the dire need for this money, he just didn't want what few controls the Dems through on it.

It was also McCain who stopped his camp. to make sure it got passed, so it seems even the GOP believes in socialism as long as it gives their base the money

And do you think these executives, flush with taxpayer bailout money, should make a sacrifice or two?

Record breaking profits??????????? WHo's reports you been reading nobodies obviously because almost nobody's profits for this past year broke a record for anything but the staggerly low profits. So point 2 of yours is flawed beyond reason.

Had the man stuck with the second part and addressed the "GREEEEEEEDDDYYY" (a meaningless relative word designed to fan the flames of envy) with only the bonuses then he would have been on safe ground with me and most everyone. But the idea that Profit is greed is simply foolish.
Where are those record breaking profits you speak of ????????????? Not in 2008 because even Conoco Philips Oil posted a loss for the year.

philosophy you're spinning him cover by ignoring the entire first part of the quote. Had he ment the bonuses only then he would have certainly said the bonuses only. Was it a fulb I hope it was an innocent flub, but I fear it was an opppps my slip is showing moment.

domiguy -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:23:10 PM)

My God....Of course that is exactly what Obama was trying to convey.

He wants every company to go deep into the red.  Then they will be forced to layoff more and more employees.  Then these laid off employees will be forced to turn to unemployment and then finally to welfare in order to eek out a putrid existance. Finally when enough of the masses have become fed up with their lot in life they will turn against their opressors....The proletariats will rise up crush the bourgeoisie and Karl "Barak Hussein Obama" Marx will finally be vindicated.

I am fairly confident that this is what he meant by "Now is not the time for profit?"....Ya think?

The double standard at work!
So when W flubbed a line ( or 156 kabillion) he is an idiot/moron/nincompoop/chimp,but when "O" does it, no problem. When W tried to go out a locked door he was a idiot/moron/nincompoop/chimp, but when "O" does it , its not a problem.

Typical babble from the left.

We are watching and counting. just like This will be the most ethical admin evva.

No lobbiest to work at the white house.
President-elect Barack Obama today put forth his second nomination of an individual whose immediate past experience as a lobbyist seems to run in direct contradiction with Mr. Obama's rhetoric on the campaign trail against the "revolving door" of lobbyists working for the government.

William Corr, whose name Mr. Obama put forward this morning to be deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, was, until September 2008, a federal lobbyist with the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, lobbying Congress unsuccessfully to require the Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco.

Last week, Mr. Obama nominated William Lynn, who lobbied for defense giant Raytheon, to serve as deputy secretary of defense.

"When I am president, they won't find a job in my White House," Mr. Obama said at a campaign event in Spartanburg, S.C., in November 2007.

Again "O" saying one thing doing another.
and the sheeple are ok with it!
but its "O" ( bank round sound of the heavenly hosts singing)

Touche, "record breaking profits" may have been too strong a word.

Why don't we go back to what rulemylife said, and substitute "record breaking profits" for "going over 700 billion dollars of a tax-payer's funded bailout"?

Of which they further mismanaged.

So you're totally cool with that, and that's cool in and of itself. Who doesn't have tons of money to throw away these days? (Well, except little old moi, apparently) Who doesn't want to pay for 18 million dollars worth of execuitive bonus's when they are barely putting hand to mouth as it is?

Why should we complain, right? Why should we want someone to stand up and say "Enough"?

Can't imagine it. Not for the life of me.

*yawn*

colouredin -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:29:34 PM)

Hmm would be interesting if the line was placed in context really. Im pretty sure that it isnt a flubbed line.

In Britain at the moment for example there has been massive bail outs of banks and yet they still had bonuses and massivly expensive christmas parties. If Brown said the line above in that context I would certainly be agreeing with him.

hlen5 -> RE: Obama pulls a Bush (Flubbed line) (1/30/2009 2:29:42 PM)

I would find it hard to believe that it wasn't a mistake on the President's part by saying now is not the time for profit. It's always time for a profit, otherwise why run a company? That doesn't mean treating the employees unfairly and giving yourself huge raises and bonuses, but what is the purpose of a company if not to provide a good or service at a profit?

That's not what he was saying.

You are reading into things what you want to read into them.

He was saying that these bonuses  (and forgive me if I'm wrong, but bonuses by their very interpretation are the taking of profits)  are not appropiate in a company not making profits.

And again, forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't that why we are providing taxpayer dollars to support these companies, because they are not making profits?
