I've read several threads where the general consensus is that Doms just wear normal people clothes. However, Ex and I are headed to the fetish flea, where we'll be attending the masquerade, and I'm having a custom-made fetish dress made. He wants to look equally awesome. Any suggestions for "Dom" attire, apart from a leather biker hat or something?

I wish I had some good ideas for you. For some reason, fetish gear on guys almost always looks creepy to me. When I want to attend a BDSM event, I always have trouble deciding what to wear that will "get me into the club", but doesn't seem goofy to me. A lot of fetish wear looks great on women. Go figure.

Do you want his costume to match yours, or just general things? You mentioned it's a masquerade... are you guys going en-masque? Is it for actual *costumes* or just fetishwear? I'm going to assume costumes and masks for my answers right now...

In general, something dark and brooding is always nice for dom-type things. You can go for a more gothic look, with a slight 'vampire' bent with a dark cloak (it doesn't even need to be expensive, just keep the cheap hidden ), a simple domino, black (leather is nice) gloves, a simple dark (button down) shirt, black pants and shiny dress shoes.

If he doesn't mind bearing a little skin he can always do an achient Roman type thing, with a toga, a gold mask and sandles (as long as it'll be nice and warm).

There's a god in a pantheon somewhere that's dedicated to punishing the evil souls who go to hell, but I can't remember the name... if you can find it, he could go *as* that god (and it would even be appropriate for him to bring a flogger or similar).

In general it's difficult for awesome fetishwear for men that isn't terribly cliche, so try to embrace and tweak a cliche, or 'fetishize' something that isn't normally considered fetishable (I'm making up words left and right XD). Otherwise, since it's a masquerade, he can always take a theme and work with it.

There's always the idea of taking an element of your costume and spinning it into his own. You can do something as simple as taking a color and embracing it to create an outfit... it would be a nice touch, too, binding both of you.

I can't give more suggestions on things that will match till I know what your dress is like, though (feel free to Cmail me, if you want it to be a surprise for other people).

I agree that "Dom-Wear 2008" is not as it should be...  I prefer to overdress, rather than underdress.  If you need an idea that will work just about anywhere, then get a nice black suit (coat and pants), dark shoes (dress shoes are best, not Tux shoes),  and a black turtle neck (or you can bring in your dresss or accent color with a clean, nice red T-shirt or whatever color you are wearing).

It is slick, clean, respectable, but has elements if evil, power, and foreboding.  I hope this makes sense, and NO,, I am not a fashion diva.. I am a Dom who has had a few Fantastic Subs & Slaves in Los Angeles who were fashion Divas and helped me to fine tune my fashion (as much as I would allow them to... of course).

I hope this helps... if not, then just go in a pair of jeans and a dirty T-shirt... you can call it "grunge" and ppl will copy you around the world... (or has that already been done... hmmmm?).

I would suggest:

Something in a military/officer vein from the army surplus shop.

Custom-made leather police shirt, leather motorcycle trousers, driving gloves and tall boots.

If he has a nice chest, a leather harness or Sam Brown belt with leather trousers and Harley riding boots.

If he has the confidence to pull it off, a leather kilt.

One very elegant male Dominant I know searches out and wears historical frock overcoats and looks wonderful in them.

Lastly, you could take a tour of Malabars.  He can dress as a "Lord" or a "Knight".

Aravain:  I believe he's called Kushiel:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kushiel

There's also a book series by the same name, by Jacqueline Carey.  If you like reading that book series has some EXCELLENT costume ideas.  Most of that is more aimed at sub types though...

I really like the suit idea, especially if you can pull in colors from your dress.  I wouldn't go for shiny shoes though, but that's just me =p

Saw some way cool possiblities for formal wear at www.delilahscollection.com.

Where else are you going to find a leather swallowtail evening coat, or a leather kilt?

Or something simpler and readily available: look for a men's long-sleeved silk shirt in some flattering color, a black leather vest (any motorcycle shop or Craigslist or even thrift stores if they have the winter garb out). Finish it off with black jeans, black corduroy or velveteen slacks, or leather/suede slacks if the budget allows. Dress it up or down with rolled sleeves or a fedora or Aussie bush hat or Elizabethan half-cape. Boots—cowboy, cyclist, riding, waffle stompers…more choices and variations, and much of it available used if time and shopping energy allow.

Result? A dom who looks good, and has a choice of interesting textures on his body to add to scenes if he choses.

Of course, another look can be achieved by omitting the shirt! But I'd hope that a dom who does that is at least a little buffed out.

Well I'll be... she used the real name XD

I had heard of the God before reading the books (for the record, I've read each book an absurd number of times), but nothing in depth.

Thanks, Thorns82 :D Yet more reason to love Carey!

EDIT: On reading the wiki it's not the same one I was talking about... though it's awesome that there was *actually* a Kushiel in Hebrew mythology.

depends on your particular taste in fetishware, when dealing with leather however they do run small so rule of thumb is to get the next size bigger, and for clothes you dont know about make sure its returnable(for online purchases this is important since most wares are expensive)

I have to say, personally, a good quality pair of black pants and a good quality black shirt with black shoes, does it every time. I have no idea, but I think its a hot look that suits any guy.
