ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!

Okay, I had to get that out of my system first.

My computer has been infected with adware.  Even when I am off line I get ads popping up on my screen.  When I am on line it kicks me off line (my internet connection is Roadrunner, if that’s at all relevant).  I’ll be trying to post here on Collarme or listening to a tune on Youtube and –click – it’s gone (when that happens sometimes the ad pops up and sometimes it doesn’t).  I’m ready to punch the screen out!

-- brief departure: if anybody out there works for Pep Boys auto parts (one of the ads that keeps popping up on me) , please inform your senior management that I now hate your company with a passion and will never set foot in one of your stores ever again.  In fact, I am now dedicated to bad mouthing your company to every one I meet.  FUCK PEP BOYS!

okay, back to the main topic --

I have AOL virus scanner left over from when I was on AOL but that can’t find anything.  I also had a free trial scan from Malwarebytes antimalware but that didn’t work either.

Any suggestions?

That program works very well, I'll vouch for that.

Ad-Aware (see link above from Angelika)
Spybot Search & Destroy

Download and use both you can't go wrong with them. Both totally free and very effective

AVG is a good free antivirus.
also, go to google.com and get their toolbar.  they have a popup blocker on it.
can you find the taskmaster and see what is running?

There's also www.trendmicro.com which has a free online scan.  I've had success with Max Secure Spyware Detector too, but alas it's not free.  Good luck!

Probably way out of date. Download Ewido and Lavasoft (both free programs) and turn 'em loose. You'll be clear in an hour.

Ad-Aware  and Spybot-SD., ZoneAlarm firewall , Avg. All free. And they work well. At least they have for me. I have not had problems since 2003. .
Might want to run your PC on safe mode and then run the adware and Spybot. If that does not work you could go to a command prompt and run msconfig and check out the startup programs for suspicious ones.

I think the best thing though would be to pry 80 bucks loose from your budget and spring for a copy of Kaspersky Internet Security Suite. My system's never been cleaner since I bought it last year. For years, I'd been using AVG anti-virus and a tandem of Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Ewido Anti-Spyware, along with a Zone Alarm firewall, and thought I'd been running a pretty safe system. An hour after I installed Kaspersky, I found viruses and Trojans that had been on my hard drive for weeks, and in one case, a virus that was 6 years old. Zone Alarm let 'em through, and Ewido, AVG, and Lavasoft failed to find them. Considering how much money I move around in my bank accounts and brokerage accounts on these computers, that 80 bucks for Kaspersky may have been the smartest money I ever spent.

Well I will have to check into that. I don't have any sensitive info on here but it's still good to upgrade when you can.

screw all those other products.  They work fine AFTER the process is stopped.  You need to stop the process from launching.  Find a buddy with a computer and download the free version of UNHACKME.  Let it restart your computer and it will tell you what is starting up.  I use a three tier process to remove baddies, unhackme has been step one lately.
Then get yourself a copy of Malwarebytes and clean up the rest of your system.

I think kaspersky can be tried 30 days for free.

I reckon I can give a couple more quarts of blood to get the money for this. Sigh.

If you use malwarebytes, make sure you check for updates on a regular basis.  I use the free version and it works fine for me.
