either this last winter, or the winter before, hell I cant remember. Was living north of Houston, Tx

There was winter weather headed north of Houston, mind you I said North, not Houston. We were borderline.  Houston shut down like 2 days before, the day before they shut down over passes, it never hit them.  Laughed my ass off.

I think a couple of weeks later it did finally lightly hit and you would swear it was a natural disaster.  Broke their 10 year record of no winter weather.

Y'all know that corporations send their teams to management training seminars where they learn "teamwork" and "over-coming insecurities" capped off with a performance of walking barefoot over hot coals?

Broke Quebecer's snack when you can't afford maple syrup?  Frozen snots, of course.

Due to wintry weather conditions I will be able to make it to the office tomorrow in no time (due to the amount of people that will ring in and say - snowed in)

Snowed in, in Ireland equates to a light coverage (my windscreen was covered )

Due to wintry conditions in Ireland I will also be able to fit in about 3 extra meetings (as a result of most of the country sitting at home)

Due to wintry conditions in Ireland I will enjoy seeing my um build her first snowman tomorrow.

Regards,
Someone that much prefers the heat but can see advantages in us being "snowed in"

Snow always makes me laugh, laugh in the way it brings the one of the world's most advanced countries to a blinding headless chicken mentality as soon as an inch or two sticks on the ground. Here in  Britain, what a complete fuck up, the same fuck up it always is when we get a little more of anything in weather. Just hear a Briton moan when we have a rare spell of hot weather, any more than two days of it and worry starts to set in, the same with rain, a bit more than usual then people start thinking the sky is falling down, snow, what a laugh. The simple answer is, I believe, Media. Notice the elevated speech the news people speak in when displaying news reels of some of the extremes they have sent a reporter to capture, as if the condition shown is indicative  of everywhere else until one looks out the window and can still see grass sticking up through the snow.

The simple answer is snow is just water, albeit frozen water, given the season is winter when it's cold and the fact it usually rains here a lot, expect it and deal accordingly. If one must drive, be careful, though I do think modern cars isolate a person from the road conditions, making them less aware of what the four inches of tyre contact are actually riding on.

You know, I really fail to understand how Britain ever became powerful enough to conquer so much of the world in the past, when slight extremes of weather put so much panic and woe into us, or is it we have become soft.

I have been told that the state of Texas owns one snow plow. With which they propose to clear all of I- 40 should it be necessary. Not sure if that's true but I do know that if it snows there, traffic snarls.

And Washington, D.C. is a byword for places you don't want to be when there's a quarter inch of white stuff. Here, we aren't getting any more than two inches total today, not even a two hour delay.

8" of snow???  The sky is falling.  8" of snow is just a dusting.

OneMoreWaste -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/3/2009 5:49:31 AM)

Heh, we got some flurries a week or so ago, the first time we had any snow in 5-6 years. There wasn't enough to stick to the ground, but the whole office ground to a halt as we all watched it falling outside the window. Such a peaceful novelty [:D]

The last time it did stick, the downtown area was DESERTED. It was really creepy. Having recently moved from Western NY (yay "lake effect" snow), we enjoyed the bounty of parking spaces.

Here we have an excuse, though, extremely rare snow = no snow removal equipment whatsoever. I can't understand a major metropolis that experiences snow on a regular basis (@ the OP) being shut down so easily. Did they waive the congestion charges for the day if so many people stayed home?

Funny that just last night (on British TV) I was watching a Norwegian rally-car driver race a specially prepared car down an icy mountain... now THAT's how you do it! I've driven on flat ice in my old 4x4, manageable as long as you do everything slowly and gradually.

But after completely losing control of a front-wheel-drive car on bald tires driving downhill on a snowy road, I swore off icy climes, m'self. Good luck with all that rot!

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/3/2009 6:10:41 AM)

We don't see snow very often here in the Middle of Oklahoma - though the northern part of the state sees it farily consistantly.  Thing is, even if it's Blizzard conditions outside, a lot of us here tend to shrug and go "oh well, so I drive a bit slower - got shit to get done regardless of the weather."  The city/state offices and such though - yeah, you'd think it was Apocolypse if there's more than 1/4 inch.

Aneirin -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/3/2009 6:17:48 AM)

If you gonna drive in the stuff, may I recommend snow chains on the wheels, the modern ones you don't have to raise the wheel off the ground to fit them. Oh and two wheel drive cars, still fit chains on all wheeels, no point having grip on two wheels and the remaining two skidding and sliding around all over the place.

Now if you have a 4 x 4 with snow chains fitted, you are pretty much unstoppable.

I first found the wonder of the things whilst stuck in snow on a motorway. I was driving a 109 safari land-rover, in four wheel drive, but the wheels getting no grip, were useless, all four of them. Then something was seen to be moving in the snow, a little car with lights on like candles in jam jars, it went blasting past and in control, an old citroen 2cv fitted with snow chains.

LaTigresse -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/3/2009 7:16:23 AM)

Not many here use chains. However in the mountains, there are passes where they are required. It's when you get feet of snow, instead of inches.

Tropical birds in winter, no wonder it's dead.

It gets so cold here it kills the sparrows.[:D]

There is a robin on the roof outside my office window and it's staring at me. I'm uncomfortable.

~shudders~  you know from previous conversations we've had how I feel about birds.  That movie just twisted me.

I rememberback around 79 I was working with my brother delivering business supplies in the DC area. My route was basically some of the intown buildings like Treasury, Commerce, etc. and NW, out to Gaithersburg; Georgetown, McLean, some Fairfax, some drops out Cabin John Parkway, etc. (I recall National Geographic's HQ was in Gaithersburg. Maybe Rockville).

I had a load of 50 boxes of Xerox paper had to get out to Dulles and get shipped to Ghana or Uganda, whatever. The roads were covered and there were small snowbanks on the sides from where they'd plowed. The streets in town were still pretty good. Snow was still coming down heavily. Central Business machines was, IIRC, on 13th down around K St. We packed the load in the back of the Dodge long-wheelbase van I drove, and had a little marching powder on the elevator (my brother always had, and we lived on coffee, coke, steaks, and White Russians back then). Don't remember the route I took, probably 66 out to the Dulles Rd. I left at dusk, and it got dark on the way. The snow really started coming down about halfway out there, so I slowed down. That's when I realized I had a problem. See, when we loaded the boxes, some of the weight went back past the rear axle; just enough to make the front end a little light. As I used gas, the weight balance changed. On the snowy, icy road, steering became a real adventure. On occasion, the front end would leave the road entirely. So I'm doing from 5 to 10 miles and hour, white-knuckled and VERY alert [8D], at night during a semi-blizzard in a barely-steerable van, on a road I'd never been on, and PLUS I had a deadline. I have no idea how I found where to drop my freight. I recall it was transferred straight to one of those baggage carts to go out to the plane. Don't remember driving home, either (off Colesville RD. Silver Spring, just inside the beltway). No White Russians that night; Scotch.

It does occasionally snow in DC. [:D]

Termyn8or -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/4/2009 7:08:41 AM)

I remember driving back from FL one time, you couldn't even see the road. I had a buddy with me and he wanted to stop, "How the hell can you drive in this", well I WAS getting a little low on money.

Boiled down to "See those phone poles there ? See those phone poles there ? Y'just drive smack dab in the middle between them". We made it, and good thing too, because later I discovered my cellphone battery was completely dead, the car charger had failed and I was blissfully unaware of the fact.

And you don't even want to hear about the wreck in 1989. Suffice it to say, slowing down to 30MPH is not enough when you hit black ice underwater. There was no mandatory insurance back then, and it wound up costing me a bit of green. It really in a way wasn't my fault, but when your car hits the back of another, it is your fault, so be it. The law is quite unforgiving in that respect, but really I don't see how it could be.

Driving used to be fun, I loved showing off, I could drive sideways down the road, even a winding road, but unfortunately I had to grow up and now driving is a chore. And people make it worse.

I still say these people who whine about 0 degree temeratures, when they mean Celsius, are lightweights. Right now it is minus nine degrees Celsius here, it's like a heat wave. I wonder if there is any charcoal around for the grill.

I always use charcoal, if I am going to use gas I'll just use the infrared broiler. Not that I can't cook on gas, I just think the coals render a better flavor.

So OK, I am crazy, thinking about a cookout in this weather. I never said I was not crazy, and as many of you know I am a Clevelander, so the evidence is there. Hell here you get picked on for NOT being crazy !

Atlanta is the same... everything shuts down, the stores are cleaned out... it's hilarious!

i worked at a grocery store in...1987?  something like that, in atlanta.  i thought people were going to LOSE their MINDS.  i was bagging instead of ringing that day...at one point the cashier thanked me for keeping up and said "you bagged over $5,000 worth of groceries in the last 2 hours, BTW."  dayum.

houston is about the same, though.  the city screeched to a halt a few weeks back when it snowed.  we got a DUSTING.  it wasnt even cold enough for the roads to ice up.

LOL I read about the 10 cm shutting down London and had to chuckle for us that is a light snow fall ,, here if we get 30 cm I am still expected to get to work "ON TIME"  that means planning enough advance drive time to get there....

Here right now we are at minus 21C  or -5 F   I had to snow blow an area for the dog  and the snow was to soft and she would sink over her head ..on Saturday they are calling  for rain will be up to 5C or 41F... been a weird winter  for alternating temperature extremes and heavy snowfalls...thank goodness for the warmer temps  though we needed it to get rid of lot of the snow

this map provides an idea of average annual snowfalls in centimeters  in the area.... the last 2 years we have had above normal snowfalls  I am  near the London Ontario snow belt area so about 300 cm a year is  average

I grew up about 1/2way between Rochester and Niagara Falls, near Holley, NY. In the Blizzard of 66, there was a snowbank just north of Holley that measured 32 feet. It took 3 days for the huge state plows to cut through on Rt. 237, which I lived on. Amazing.
