Desert FIP, the additional transportation time can be a real burden. Can you have a car pool with some of the other families arranged?

my friend always mentioned  "showering" as a pro for team sports..he is bisexual...and when he mentions that in the shower..it became negative for others...lol

Heh.....I'm in that ''showering'' situation you speak of every single day - but there are no bi-sexual dudes. However....I do catch a lot of dudes staring at my back, with huge grins, asking how they can ''get some'' of those vicious nail marks....[:D]

As to Ven's query :

Pro : Pure competitiveness and the camaraderie associated with teamwork.

Con : Not every individual is built in mind/body to compete.

Woe to the conquered.....

What are you favorite sports to participate in, Utopian?

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/3/2009 8:55:13 PM)

My opinion, for the team based sports, they typically build team based people, and the more the person identifies there worth and personal identity in relationship to that activity the more group based they'll become.

Is it good or bad, well, that depends, what I see as bad many see as good. Ability to work in a team is a good quality, however, reliance on having a team in order to be able to motivate yourself is a common problem I've seen in "sports" people. Especially those that were very entrenched in childhood. So, it depends on the extent, and what their future holds to determine if it was good or not.

Myself, I'm admittedly not your ideal team player. I work most and best when I have full control over myself. I would not work well in jobs, were I were not able to decide course of action, unless I was simply doing it for the money short term and didn't care about the job at all. However, I'm probably the most optimal  if the job requires individual initiative. However, having been in sales myself before, and sales for some reason likes to structure itself as a "team", a team where the benefits are not divided equally, but they play the team game. Those that are really into the team concept, simply can't function at anywhere near the level when alone.

So, the benefits of the team mindset will really help a person later if they join a team. Obviously, but will hamper them if they find themselves in a situation to where there is no team.

Of course ideally, a little of both would go a long way, but in the real world, very few work great in a team and individually. Many delude themselves thinking they do, but in my experience, most are either wolves(as someone else said), or require a team environment to perform well.

Even saying that you can have a team of wolves as long as the tasks and responsibilities are very rigidly separated, and authority over each is given to each person.

I may not be the best person to answer on this question though as I have always looked up to the individual that made a difference, and never groups. So, team, outside of a few  is not in my vocabulary.

Personally, I see to much team, group, behavior, and wish their were more individuals out there, but I'm warped according to most sheeple. LOL.

I hear you, NTUY.  Team sports do not work well for highly independent types.

Oh hell, Ven - At an ultra-competitive level, I've played just about everything :

I wrestled and played football in high school.....and coulda easily walked on and excelled in both at the community college level if I hadn't messed around so much.

Played football for the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton{Base team}

My father was President and chief fundraiser for a well known NorCal boxing club - As well as the sole sponsor for Marin/Sonoma county's first semi-pro baseball team. I was involved in the former.

As an assistant, I helped coach the defensive backs and linebackers at the local high school here in Oregon. Had a similar stint with wrestling, and to a lesser degree baseball. {About six-seven years ago}

Played city league basketball as early as back in late 2005.

To date - I've run tons of class 5-plus whitewater--in a team setting-- and participated at most local power-lifting competitions.

My girlfriend plays women's league softball, and teaches both the '' group power '' and cardio kick boxing classes at my gym a couple times a week.

And during my formative years, all the way up to the age of eighteen, I always lived on a golf course - but hated the game.

Yeah - I love sports....[:D]

i'm a major fan of team activities. A well organised team makes room for those with highly individual proclivities. i used to be a sprinter......a damn good one at that.....my school rugby team exploited that by taking me out of the team tactics, instead telling me, "if you get the ball, run like hell". The rest of the team practised as a 14 man team, instead of 15. Worked incredibly well......as my bog standard working class comprehensive school spanked public schools.
Note i've used the word activities, rather than sports. Creating theatre, for instance, is a highly team oriented activity. Specialised skill sets have to be combined to create a synergistic whole...just as a great sports team does.

I am a big participator in team activities that involve artistic pursuits rather than brute strength.

i coach a pee-wee soccer team and there are two goals i want to have instilled before the season ends:
1) you do not kick the snot out of each other just for the hell of it
2) GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP!!!!

and...it is also social interaction for the families.

......not ballet then? 'Cos i've worked with dancers, and some of them ballet-folks could arm wrestle bricklayers to the ground.......[:D]
Still, i hope you don't mind that i widened the question to include non-sporting team activities. While i'm a big fan of team sports in schools for all the reasons people have already mentioned, not everyone is cut out for them. The Arts, especially the collaborative ones, are an excellent alternative in my view.......and if people think the Arts aren't competitive, well you haven't hung around enough artists.....lol

Vendaval -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:03:38 PM)

By all means, please add the dimension of team participation.  That is not a derailment but rather an enhancement.  Ballet is far too painful for my participation.  The performers are wonderful to watch.  For active participation I prefer dance to be modern or jazz or tribal/ethnic.

philosophy -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:10:41 PM)

...got to be honest, pure dance isn't my thing. However, i've used a few dancers in shows from time to time. Saw the all-male Swan Lake a few years back though.....jaw dropping stuff.
Oddly enough, though i'm pretty much immune to stage fright, dance scares the bejesus out of me. Dunno why. i like my words.....lol

Vendaval -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:15:53 PM)

Stage fright can be so random in its appearances.  I have done speech classes for years but froze completely before one presentation, my mind totally blank.  Thankfully the professor let me calm down and try again later.

philosophy -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:27:42 PM)

It's a weird one certainly.

The thing about team activities is that they speak to our nature as social animals. Most sports and most arts also include an audience. They are witnessed events. (Which is probably where that stage fright comes from.....realising that we're being witnessed). i think it's a healthy thing to get used to being seen, to know that others witness our activities. To know that what we do, how we do it, occurs in the light.

Vendaval -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:31:20 PM)

You know, I also took a discussion class as a speech course and the pressure was so much lower for all of us because everyone stayed at the same level both physically and symbolically.  Several people in the class took that rather than traditional speech because of their stage fright.

philosophy -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:33:20 PM)

..it's the difference between drama and theatre. Theatre requires an audience, a number of non-participants, some who know whats happening and those who don't. In drama everyone is a participant. Makes it very useful in certain therapeutic settings.

Vendaval -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:34:55 PM)

True.  One reason I enjoy folk/ethnic dancing is that the whole event is more interactive with the audience unliked a traditional Western staged dance show.

philosophy -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 3:41:36 PM)

..heh, you'd have loved the stuff i did with my theatre company back in Wales.........interactive theatre where the audience often changed the story.....

Vendaval -> RE: Pros and cons of participating in team sports (2/4/2009 4:22:11 PM)

Were large objects thrown at the performers or did mosh pits form?
