We have seen a number of vessels seized by Somali pirates in the past couple of years and now U.S. Maritime academies are increasing and improving their training against piracy.  The best tactic?  Avoid being boarded in the first place.

What words of wisdom do you have to share, Popeye?

"U.S. seamen are being trained to fend off pirates"

By CLARKE CANFIELD, Associated Press Writer  "PORTLAND, Maine – With an alarming number of tankers and cargo ships getting hijacked on the high seas, the nation's maritime academies are offering more training to merchant seamen in how to fend off attacks from pirates armed not with cutlasses and flintlocks but automatic weapons and grenade launchers.

Colleges are teaching students to fishtail their vessels at high speed, drive off intruders with high-pressure water hoses and illuminate their decks with floodlights.

Anti-piracy training is not new. Nor are the techniques. But the lessons have taken on new urgency — and more courses are planned — because of the record number of attacks worldwide in 2008 by outlaws who seize ships and hold them for ransom."

A Browning .50 cal can also come in handy.

I'll second that.
Or ten of them.
I read that article and I totally disagree with a "culture of awareness" that that woman was pushing for a number of reasons.
First you have to meet force with overwhelming force! Then, I'm sure all the ships that were taken were "aware" that they were being hijacked. Also, that's the type of thinking that's getting these ships hijacked in the first place!
Cripes! That woman sounds like a fucking child psychologist!
"Let's not "anger" the poor downtrodden pirates, they probably came from broken homes and poor countries."
Fuck that shit, just open up on them with six or eight .50 Cal machine guns and cut them into hamburger.
Under her scenario you'd escape but the next ship wouldn't be so lucky!
That's how you deal with pirates, you kill them!
You don't give them "counseling", "foreign aid" or "trials."
You cut them to pieces with machine gun fire and let the sharks eat them!

The possibility of mutiny was a concern with larger and powerful weaponry.

Not to mention that it limits the ports you can go to since many places do not permit foreigners to enter bearing weaponry. So if you can't go to sell your goods, or pick up goods, then you won't have a business or a ship very long.

Des, that would last for about 24 hours when they realized that they couldn't get ships into their ports!
Their economies would collapse within a week!
In three weeks people would begin to go hungry!

Ven, if they're worried about mutiny they're not paying their crews enough!

Popeye, what kinds of weapons would be appropriate on a merchant ship in your opinion?  And how would you train the crew?

If you think we are the only nation in the world that has freighters, or even the major one, you are mistaken. The majority of freighters are registered outside the U.S. because of the cost of operating as a U.S. vessel. It used to be they were primarily registered in Liberia, I don't know if that's still true.

Crews are small because most everything is automated. To add professionally trained mercenaries is equally dangerous.

Mercenaries might well decide that the cargo is valuable enough to hijack the vessel themselves.

I'd like to see some very tempting decoys, crewed by special forces types.  That would give the pirates some pause.
