Status: offline 		I was looking at the hit counts on various posts and realized that most posts seem to get about 10 percent (roughly) of the people posting to actually respond. I noticed a post on the board asking a question about singletails that has only a few hits and 0 responses. Then I noticed that the newest, latest rant post on the board (which has been there for far less time) has over 150 hits and a fair number of responses so far.

I have noticed that posts that are of the ranting variety and posts with flames do tend to get far more hit and responses in general. What does this say to you?

Soap operas without the commercials...unless you consider profiles to be just that.
I find rants to be a strange way to sell yourself.

Status: offline 		well we all are experts to rant and to be ranted on. No great intellect is required.. you can leave you manners at the door ... I think we all are capable of doing that at one time or another... some just do it more than others I would say. But, really, just who many can contribute to a question on techinques of using a knife in cutting, what is required to prevent unnessecary risk and speak from experience an not just what can be read it a book. How many use a Bullwhip in play and can provide any expertise and valuable knowledge in it's use, I suspect the numbers to be low in this regard.

So, the numbers of responses to a post are often directly related to number of those knowledgable and competent in the given area that the post is about. Plus or minus a few for the stupid factor of course *g*!

Status: offline 		To draw a parallel: Why do newspapers and news organizations rarely focus on the good news and instead always the bad. Why wouldn't these organizations make any money if they mostly reported good news?

I think most would much rather read and focus on a rant because in some way the negativity aspect applies to them.

Status: offline 		Very interesting. i'll have to agree with the whole ppl like watching train wrecks. They find it fascinating and it helps them count their blessings they arent involved! i agree with the whole comparison about newspapers/media

What am I, the Eadweard Muybridge of the SM scene?

The real answer is impossible to provide without an enormous number of long tedious descriptions or a multitude of explanatory images. Think about it: the shape of a single tail from the pull back to the point of impact. Yeah, I have nothing else to do for the rest of the year...

If people are going to post the most intimate details of their life on a message board....I'm gonna read it and sometimes comment, often times just shake my head and laugh.
For the most part it's a bunch of anonymous people spinning tales. If you can remember that you'll laugh....a lot.

Status: offline 		I would have to agree about the comment on expertise. Having no personal experience with BDSM, I cannot contribute to conversations about whips or CBT or any of the lifestyle. But I am curious, and so will read the threads that tickle my interest. Meanwhile, the threads about personal life do not require expertise - we have all lived our lives and had experiences that we can relate to others and help us relate the experiences of others to ourselves. Thus, it is easy to reply to threads of the rant variety...

Status: offline 		Depends on what you consider as flaming.

I personally am drawn to posts such as the one on submission and also the one a few days ago on dominance, because of the oppertunity for intellectual discourse. You get to share your view and read the views of other people, dialogue on the how and why and such. This I don't consider flaming.

Attacking someone is. These posts I tend to ignore on boards, and yes they tend to get the most responses. But after a while, sometimes you just wish they would sit down and shut up instead of throw insults back and forth.

Now Im not saying that intellectual discourse can't become flaming. It sometimes does, especially if it seems someone is talking down on others, or if the participant's passions are very ingrained to the point they won't even consider an opposite opinion of theirs. Although I have noticed such posts typically become heated arguments between only a few people, rather than new people adding to the thread and for the most part, seem to sort themselves out, or end up interrupted by a moderator.

Status: offline 		Just before a train wreck happens on tv or in the movies i tend to throw my hands over my eyes to watch it thru my fingers -- and feel the same way about some of the posts on-line -- lol!! Still most are interesting, enlightening and entertaining. It's a great way to spend a cloudy, rainy day...

Certainly the "people like train wrecks", thought is valid, but may not be the only explaination.

One point that hasn't been mentioned, is how specifically topical some posts are. Some may not be interested in fire play, single tails, or daddy/daughter play, so may just skip those posts. That certainly applies to me. Most rants have such a general subject line that you have to open them to understand the meaning. Hence, more hits.

To back this thought, I would like to point out how many hits you see on the hypothetical posts that Knightofmist is prone to make. These are neither rants not train wrecks, yet are heavily hit and draw a strong response.

The "train wreck" thought is certainly valid, but may also somewhat ignore the obvious, just to see the worst in everything.

Just my opinion ... cc

miti greets you, mistoferin....if the subject matter of a post is not something within my personal knowledge...or something i cannot use humour in to pour oil on the water, i usually do not reply to a post. but that is just my take on it...some people are comfortable with general posting and others quite comfortable to post in excrutiating detail.
