I don't feel the need to celebrate valentine's day. It is a manufactured holiday.
I prefer to show him daily how much I love him, and I feel the love from him constantly. I don't need the hearts and flowers from him. I have what I want in the most fulfilling relationship I've ever been in in my life.

My life isn't dictated by Hallmark assumed holidays. But business wise it is a good day since so many people wonder why they dont have a sweetheart. I get to assure them they dont need to feel less, it is only a Hallmark holiday. That does seem to help them a lot,  for which I am grateful .

I have mixed feelings about this one.
On the one hand I'm in favor of things that boost business and sales.  Also I enjoy opportunities to dress up, and engage in pleasurable ritual.  I think V-Day and days like it can serve as an inspiration and excuse for particularly demented scenes :p
On the other hand, of course, V-Day serves as a very cruel reminder to those of us who are romantics at heart, yet have failed to find or be found by true love.  Even children get to suffer from that aspect as the cards are passed around in class, and I think that sucks.
And on the third hand (provided you're a Hindu goddess), there are the fabulous anti-Valentine's parties with butt-rock and zombie themes !  I suppose, like many things, it's what you make of it.

holly, I hate crowds too. It just gets so loud and unbearable and then I begin to start thinking can't wait till it's time to leave, can it get any louder.

If we do go out to eat we go super early like 3 oclock or we go the day before or the day after.

i totally disagree. Valentines Day is intended as a special day for those you love.

I hate crowds, and all the resturants are packed that day. So we will just do what we did last year: a quiet family dinner, playing with the um, etc. A relaxing evening at home and exchanging small gifts....

All holidays are manufactured.

Yes we do celebrate Valentines. We will be spending 48 hours together in a hotel locked away from our usual schedules. This is not breaking the bank as we booked them back in Jan but even if it were to cost a fortune we would still do it. It is a bit of light hearted fun - and who doesnt deserve some of that ! If it werent for the "manufactured holiday" (all holidays are manufactured!) would we be doing this - no. Its an excuse for us to sneak away and have some bliss that is not centered around family - it is just about us. And I can't wait.

We also take it as an opportunity to send flowers / cards to friends that are particularly good to us / mean alot to us - just as a reminder that they are special to us. Always gets a smile - even from the most synical.

We don't celebrate valentine's day....

I come to detest that day... to me it's nothing more than a day to remind people to say they love their partners and do something special or them....  what about the other 364 days?

Sweetest Day isn't even big all around the US...

In my hometown it was constantly ridiculed by single people but taken AS seriously (usually more seriously) as Valentine's Day.

My friends and I used to call it 'Sweet Us Day' because the couples were even more readily visible and sickly sweet than Valentine's Day

It has nothing to do with buying love one day a year. Its a day to reinforce what your doing all year anyway. Its a bit of fun and its harmless, just like Christmas is harmless to those who celebrate it but who are not Christian.

I agree about the harmless fun thing. Its nice to spend a day doing it. I tend to think those that dont who say 'ill treat you right the rest of the time' are talking pants and are just cheap

Well...being he reads the fourms I can't stay what I'm doing other than he told me he wanted something handmade...which REALLY sucks for me cause I suck at art and craft. lol BUT it does tend to mean more cause you put a lot of time into it. His birthday is the 23rd and I'll be doing more for it than Vals day.

my deal for v day is i bake. sometimes it is one very elaborate dessert, sometimes it is a basket with a number of different treats. handmade, time consuming, from the heart, not buying into materialism, shows off my culinary skills.

I feel the same way that a couple of you do.  I think that if you need a calendar to tell you that you need to be sweet and lovey to your "other half"  Then you have more problems than waht kind of card to buy.  My ex has helped me to do nothing but set me up for disapointment for Valentine's day.  2 years ago, (when we were still together) we couldn't celebrate on the 14th.  the weather was really bad, and He was stuck in the next town over from the blizzard.  So we celebrated about a week after.  He baught me some chocolate, and a card.  He didn't write anything special in the card, and He said "You need to open that.  I want some of those Chocolates!" And ate my favorite ones. :(  And last year, we weren't together, but he wanted to get back together... So He baught me one of those big hershey kisses.  I thought it was kind of Sweet.  But then, He started fighting with me, and threw it at me.

I think that maybe this year will be differant.  I'm going to Sweets's house Friday, so I will get to wake up in His arms on Valentine's Day.  He told me that He baught me something, and I yelled at Him. lol  He has to work that day, (Walmart only has ONE holiday... lol) and I have band practice.  But I get to go back to Him that night, and We will Celebrate either Friday or Saturday night.  But I don't really care.  We are sweet, and kind, and lovey, and all that every day.  Not just once (or Twice) a year.  I have something to give to Him too, but Just incase He reads, I'm not going to say what it is. lol

Ha...that actually sounds pretty fun! I wonder how he would feel about a necklace out of it?

pissdoll:  I do plan on baking some cookies at least. I don't mind him knowing about that.

I finished his gift today and a couple friends really liked my idea!  I'm super excited about it. After Val's day I might come back if the thread is still going and post what I made him.
