I think it's partly consumer-based branding to identify groups and partly a way of identifying yourself to others.

But then again what do I know, I'm just a poster with an opinion.

I respect whatever orientation label someone picks. I only start asking questions about their actual sexual proclivities if I am interested in sexual contact with them. I have a thing for "straight" girls and bi-curious girls. I love to show them that sex between women can encompass LOTS of things, not just strap-ons and oral sex.

If they say not interested, do you still persist(I know some women who get hounded even after say they're not interested.  Ditto with guys)

No means no to me. Perhaps it is because i am female that i take sexual harassment VERY seriously. Doesn't matter what sex or gender they are, no means no to me.

That's good, I know some women who after they politely declined the person kept at it.  And I've also had this with guys too.  It's like, I respect your lifestyle, I have no problem with.  It's just not what I'm interested in.

on a very pragmatic level, why would i want to have sex with someone that doesn't want to have sex with me. "forced" in that sense is not one of my kinks.
