<I know there will be some as I go into this who say, suck it up Princess, be glad you have a job-I know that, My question is designed to insure I keep that said job>

Here is the scenario: I was recruited by this company 9 years ago, for over 10 they had been my client--I was hired for an expertise that they did not have. After two years I ran into the pirahna pool-- some first line managers didn't like what I was saying and a certain second line manager showed me the internal door ( meaning I had to go find a job elsewhere in the company or the door). A year later that second line manager ended up giving me an award for work I did in another group that benefited her group and she sent me a note that said, " I was wrong, I'm sorry".

I am now 7 years from that pirahna pool, (we have instituted documented evaluations which mine are stellar in addition to many multilevel management awards) and I find that one of those brutal first line managers is now my second line manager due to my promotion and a re-org. I have had now 7 sleepless nights as he has demonstrated that his behaviors and work expectations have not changed and I know with his genius mind, he hasn't forgotten. He got where he is by a combination of smarts and the boot heel effect--(he doesn't give a damn for the people as long as the job gets done). Sure I am 7 years removed, but I am also 7 years invested in a different personal lifestyle that can ill afford neither the angst, the ever present sword of damaclese, or having to find a new job because what I do, there are probably 200,000 in the US that can do it.

I am looking for some advice how to survive at least for a year until we open other intercompany job opptys.

Keep your mouth shut and brown nose. Honestly with a vindictive person as manager, what other choices do you have but to do things his way, document everything, and try to get on his good side?

Start speaking with other managers. Once the bully sees you have connections within the company, he will realize that he may have a fight on his hands if he decides to push you out.

I'm sorry, but if you're so worried sick that you're not sleeping, why do you state that looking outside the company is not an option? I'd be flying resumes all over.

thanks, but because of the economy, there are easily 200,000+ unemployed who can do the job that I do or have had the job I have--and this company has the best healthcare benefits around--as a single Mom, with a UM starting through 7 years of college, and at My age, I have to find a way to stick it out--somehow.

Misuse a sexual harassment policy to get HIM fired. (I saw this happening several times at a company I used to work for years ago.) Just take some comment of his as an "innapropriate sexual remark" report it to the higher ups, and act deeply offended.) At the very least, he will get a reprimand, and any dicisions that he might make concerning firing you will be tainted as being "retribution" for not fucking him.

Upside: You remain smelling like a rose while he gets his ass fired.
Downside: You end up making the whole company become a hostile, paranoid place to be... (but it sounds like it already is.)

I agree - don't butt heads, kiss butts if necessary.

I went through the same a few years ago. And when I finally left the job, the asshole I'd been working for rang me up and asked if I wanted to go out for a drink with him as he'd 'always admired me'. Always wanted to crawl into my pants more like, the spineless, back-stabbing, ugly, runty fuckwit.

That was my perfect opportunity to tell him exactly what I thought of him. Damn it felt good!!

Allow your work to speak for itself.
Getting involved in office politics usually isn't a good plan.
I would stear clear of the guy, only deal with him as necessary, and make sure I do a good job at what I am assigned.

You forgot the worst part of the "downside," MarsBonfire. That would make her a dirty liar who gets a coworker into deep shit for something he absolutely didn't do. That would make her behavior worse than his has ever been and set her up for some bad karma that she'd surely deserve. That kind of bald-face lying and manipulation is never right................luci

Having been in a similar situation - document, document , document.

did i mention document???

You should be able to last a year. It seems to be hard for people to fire one in less than an year. work harder or more than you are doing right now. Keep your deadlines. Volunteer for (yuk) committees. Do what you have to do to keep your job.

One thing i found out was that your friends at work are not your friends. They are friendly aquaintences at work - and won't put out their necks for you. So don't rely on people you know at work.

whatever you do, don't talk about the boss behind his back - because one way or another it will get back to him.

it sounds like that co. has been infested with buearacracy and needs to be totally restructured.
How does anyone get anything done there?

You should be doing this continually in business anyway. Now it's insurance.
