wow... well, without double-checking this with my Master, i'd seriously have to say i'm in the minority here.
i am FAR more likely to obey him at home than i am to do so in public. to some extent, it's partially because a lot of our friends aren't into the lifestyle and know me as an independent, caring, sarcastic brat and know that he and i love each other very much and put a lot of work into the relationship. if i start to balk at something he wants, i get a look... but he also knows that i have my own ideas that deserve to be discussed. while i am sub to him, i am sub ONLY to him. he's made it clear he doesn't want me as pure slave, he likes me the way i am [:)]. at home is another story... while we're playing, his word is law and only death could make me do something to disobey him.
there's another aspect to why i'm probably more likely to assert myself in public, and that's because for so long, so many decisions were made for me without anyone having enough respect to get my input first. i do have a brain, and i enjoy using it. if someone blatantly makes decisions for me without first finding out what i like, or at the very least letting me know "this is what i'm thinking/planning", i take it as an insult. if you're going to do things that affect me directly, have the common courtesy to let me know what's going on so that i can readjust my own life accordingly. he knows me well enough to know how i'll react to most things, and the few times i've reacted differently (usually negatively), then the situation has been fixed.
