...Will you listen?  And what do you hope he will say?

President Obama doesn't have to present a State of the Union speech this year, but I expect to see him in front of a joint session of Congress, on primetime TV, in the near future anyway.

I would very much like to hear him say that marijuana would be legalized.  We get an immediate kick-start of a whole new industry.  Organized crime has an enormous chunk of foundation ripped out.  We can turn the resources towards the drugs that ARE killing people.

What would you like to hear Obama say should be next?

MarsBonfire -> RE: When Obama Speaks ... (2/7/2009 9:11:21 AM)

That he's taking Bush, Cheany and the rest of the pack of malignant weasels to court to try them for war crimes. That hebeas corpus is restored, and that the government has no business in tapping everyone's phones. PATRIOT II is going to be struck down, and America will be getting back to being America again shortly, instead of being the U.S.S.A. (United Soviet States of America)

VanDarksyd -> RE: When Obama Speaks ... (2/7/2009 9:41:57 AM)

Hallelujah, Heretic! (just realized how ironic that statement was) Of course, I agree with legalization for other reasons, but that doesn't really matter, does it?

Actually, it was the number 1 priority on the Change site...

I want hear him tell me how he's gonna spend that $790 billion. Nobody really seems to have it in black and white. I also wouldn't mind hearing him say that he's going to uphold the oath he took and defend *all* of the Constitution and leave gun owners the hell alone but even if he said that I'd know it was a lie.

slaveluci -> RE: When Obama Speaks ... (2/7/2009 12:04:43 PM)

Legalizing marijuana would be a great start.  I'm not so sure there should still be a "war" on any drugs because it's become a war on the users and that's bullshit.

I would like to see alot of things reformed as far as the criminal "justice" system.  We need to stop spending million upon million of dollars to build more prisons and then stuffing them with drug offenders and other non-violent (property crime) offenders.  Unless someone is violent or predatory and a true danger to me in a physical sense, I don't believe they need to be locked in a cell.  Restitution is the way to go.

I'd love to see the pendulum swing back that way rather than the "lock everyone up and throw away the key" mentality.  Not only is it wrong, but it's too costly.  We've got much better uses for our money.

I hope he will say what is in his heart and now what Axelrod and Emanuel tell him to say because it's good politics.  I hope it will be a messge of hope and highlights the strength of the American character that is being challenged in these difficult times by politicians trying to get pork laden legislation passed under the table and media elites selling 30 second commercials vying as to who could come up with the most danger out there instead of the positives out there.

I hope he will say that, "my fellow Americans..our hearts and our purse is open to help those in need to get a head start but 90% of the work has to be done by you to make your lives.  To the 92% plus of Americans still working, I pledge my best to ensure that you continue at that labor to put food on the table for your families...and not spend hard earned tax dollars to fund debts to our country that are squandered away on pet projects of corrupt politicians in both parties.

To the unions I say, we appreciate the magnificant contribution unions have made to our country.  However, this is not the time to make demands on business but a time to work closely with management to determine what is fair compensation based on current pre-depression economy, and what has to be done to keep that company in business.  To do otherwise would drive that business offshore or render them incapable of competing in a world repleat with cheap and plentiful labor.

I have asked my Comptoller of the Currency and Secretary of the Treasury to ensure that every item, line by line, expenditure by expenditure, politica sponsors of the project, all be defined in our web page for this Recovery Act.  I will initiate an office of  "Taxpayer Ombudsman" for the confidential comments from any citizens on projects that they can prove are corrupt in execution. Any money saved by these patriotic whisteblowers will be rewarded with a 10% bonus on the entire value of the contract to that person for a job well done.  The penalities for those convicted of stealing from the nation will be fined 100% of the value of the contract with no Court having the ability to reduce this penalty under the law that will be written.

Good night..and God bless America!"

At which point I will declare myself part of the Obamanation...

I have never had a very productive working relationship with marijuana, but the US Govt has a flat out self-destructive relationship with it.  It  not only wastes vast monies trying to prevent, arrest, and punish its access and use, it is also a huge loss of revenue.  This stimulus bill and bailout is only about cutting and spending revenue.  There needs to be some reality check here with new programs for raising money.  Legalizing marijuana is an absolute no brainer in a country where alcohol and cigarettes are already legal. And the first place the government turns to raise taxes.

Just this week two very interesting things have transpired to show both the idiocy of these laws and law enforcements unwillingness to give up their power  & livelihood by decriminalizing it.  First was Michael Phelps with the bong.  Huge outrage, blah blah, and he gets hit with endorsement cancellations and suspensions and who knows what  more shit is going to hit his fan.  If he had been holding a martini glass, he would have been on the cover of GQ.  The most admired kid in America, perhaps the most admired man after Obama.  His choice of recreational drug now sees him perhaps even facing criminal charges.
So in a country where the last three presidents have smoked marijuana and now its athelete of the century, there are still these antiquated, unaffordable laws being prosecuted.  Phelps now becomes an icon for Americas supreme stupidity/hypocrisy re pot.   Good pr wise tho for the legalizing pot platform.  They could not have found a more ideal poster boy.

Obama specifically told the DEA not to pursue their actions against medical marijuana clinics.  But The Bushees are still in the DEA. Seizing this short window before they are replaced, they invaded three clinics here in Ca (SD), made multiple arrests, caused a lot of havoc and needless expense to the victims and to our local governments.  They openly defied Obama and the laws of Ca where medical marijuana is legal.  This is actually a pretty signicant show down between a state and the federal govt, but more promisingly a vivid contrast between the criminalization of marijuana in the past DEAs and the at least laissez faire attitude the Obama administration will take.  That will save lots of money and stop destroying lives and families.  Then one might hope that the obvious writing on the wall for legalizing and taxing this huge business will become an economic reality.

TheHeretic -> RE: When Obama Speaks ... (2/7/2009 5:09:39 PM)

The boost to the economy from the recreational aspect would be pretty good.  New retail outlets opening up and paying rent in strip malls, the display cases and distribution vehicles being ordered.  Taxes on hundreds of millions (maybe billions) of dollars being paid.  Then we have the equipment for home growing, hydroponic systems, lighting, irrigation.

The real boost though, would be the whole new commercial industries that would develop.  The sheer amount of biomass that is produced from commercial hemp is astounding.  There would be a boom in the construction of local facilities to process that material where it is grown, instead of shipping it off as a raw material.  Building materials, paper, textiles, seed oil.  Since it is not a food product (yeah, whatever. those brownies taste like dirt), it can be grown using non-potable/recycled water.

I'd like to see him say we are going to do that.  I don't have any expectation of it.

Man have you seen what long term exposure does to the person. You are welcoming a new era of hunched back people that talk in a really monotonal fashion and who think a milk cart goes as fast as an F1 car.

So?  Have you seen what alcohol does to chronic drunks?  We legalized that, and booze doesn't have anything like the commercial applications of hemp.

FullCircle -> RE: When Obama Speaks ... (2/7/2009 5:43:37 PM)

They would prohibit that too if they could, even tried once, too much history involved. Once the cat is out of the bag you can't put it back in the bag apparently. It is a case of this cat isn't out of the bag and any justification of it would open the bag up and let the cat jump out. Interesting to note UK reclassified it to class B recently due to potent skunk type which kills more brain cells more rapidly and with statistic links to schizophrenia in young people. LSD? Ecstasy? No more prescription drugs, no more doctors prescribing drugs. We have non prescription codeine if you want.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: When Obama Speaks ... (2/7/2009 6:06:15 PM)

Obama could say that, but it wouldn't make it legal.  Marijuana is outlawed by Federal law, and it's outlawed by every state.  I would like to see all legislation on drugs to be the sole domain of state law.  Our founders were very clear that those types of decisions belonged to the states.  Abortion, drugs, education, healthcare, and numerous other issues should all remain state issues.

Hemp seed oil is great on salads. Nutty flavor. Super-healthy, too.

quote:

Hemp Seed Oil is a highly nutritious food, and contains anti-oxidants, protein, carotene, phytosterols, phospholipids, as well as a number of minerals including calcium, magnesium, sulfur, potassium, iron, zinc, and phosphorus. It is a source of complete protein and contains all twenty know amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids. It also contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D, and E. The green color in Hemp Seed Oil is a result of the high level of chlorophyll which is naturally present in the seeds.
Perhaps the most valued property of Hemp Seed Oil is its percentage of Essential Fatty Acids, which is higher than any other plant in the world. It contains both Omega-6 and Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids, in a proportion of 3:1. This proportion is the recommended balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 acids, making it a simple perfect way to complete your diet.

fr (now I know what that means)

They can't legalize pot. There are international treaties in the way, among other things. There are also unwritten laws for them. They must maintain the clean look, that they fight drug use because it is the right thing to do. It is a facade, and sometimes you find these same people taking twenty pills a day. That doesn't matter. A joint is harmful because it supports a criminal enterprise. Well it wouldn't BE a criminal enterproze if anyone in this building had another brain.

Hemp, and all the varieties thereof, when processed can yield many useful substances, among them more effective drugs, nutrients, as well as additives for industrial use. In addition, the flax part itself, the stems etc., can be used as polymers are now in plastics, and it makes a better plastic. Talk to the oil companies about it.

So, when Obama speaks I do not listen. I do not listen to people speaking like that. I would rather have a transcript actually. Usually I can read and absorb it faster than they can talk. That applies to everything, the other crackpots offer me tapes of some guy speaking. I have no interest in that, write it down if it is that important dammit.

I can and will assert that there is an error in the National Bureau of standards, that uses the resonant frequency of a friggin Xenon atom or something as a reference to measure time. I assert now that the process has error. It may be a whole microsecond per millenium, but if it is an error, it is an error.

Believe nothing, until it fits. And believe it or not, as much as I like math as something solid in science, I must say, don't trust math either these days.

Whad they say ? Don't believe what you hear and only half of what you see. Something like that.

I guess everyone has a pet cause they imagine Obama will take on.He seems to be all things to all people.

Most of that isn`t so,tho.

I doubt he`ll or any elected official at the federal level will go for legalized pot.You won`t even get de-criminalization considered.

The best anyone can hope for is that Obama will leave the states that have decriminalized weed, alone. The feds have been very very busy busting legal(by state law)pot shops in Cali.  Usually just taking everything and never pursuing charges.

That might stop. It`s possible that the new AG will have a policy similar to AG Janet Reno.

Legal pot? Not for another generation.

They can't legalize pot because it would cut into Big Pharmacy's profit.
