Hi all. My M and I just got back from the hospital. He had reconsructived surgery on his ankle; bone grafts, marrow transfers, and a bunch of metal. He is in pain and I am exhausted. If any of you have time for to send out a happy thought or prayer or what have you, I would really appreciate it. Going from slave to care taker is going to be hard because ALL the decisions will be on my shoulders for a while (pain pills do impair judgment).

He is well and resting, and bound to be less cranky soon. Thanks for everyone who has sent along their kind wishes.

Is there a saint of juggling, tightrope walking, and paradigm shifting, let me know.

You can do it :) I'll light some incense for him, in either case.

feydeplume,

I don't know if you have any facility with spreadsheets. If you do
then using one daily to keep track of his meds and reactions can
prove to be a VERY POWERFUL tool. I speak from experience.

By putting everything on the sheet and then using a new one daily
then putting them in a 3 ring binder you create a record of what is
happening that you can review which will show you patterns you are
too busy and tired to catch without it.

Feel free to email me on the other side and I will help you set one up.
This has worked more than once for me and for others I know.

All the best and remember that taking care of him includes taking care
of yourself so you can be there for him. It is not selfish to also take care
of you, it is necessary.

Thanks. I am hit you up for that spread sheet, there are a lot of meds, including shots of anti-coagulant and I feel totally out of my depth. This is not what the surgeon explained to me before M went under the knife for 3 hours.

oh and thanks for letting me whine and be all human and stuff.

Hello feydeplume,

The spreadsheets are a great idea.  I also recommend having one of those plastic pill dispensers that list days and times.  You can find those at a pharmacy or medical supply store.  If his recovery means sleeping in separate rooms a monitor like parents use for youngsters is great so that you can hear him if you are in the kitchen or another part of the home.

Do you have family or friends who can help you move him up or down?  You need to be careful about injuring yourself as you assist him in recovery.  Also in medical supply stores are shower benches and other devices to aid with mobility and getting the person cleaned up.

Take care both of you.

Call him a pussy and tell him "No pain meds for you."
Then give an evil laugh....

These are especially excellent since he'll be on pills that will affect judgement and stuff. Last time I was on major pain meds I couldn't remember if I took my medications half the time... like, five minutes after I took them. If he's going to be self reliant with taking the meds, especially time-sensitive ones, one of these is a really helpful resource.

Thanks everyone.
