In recent days we have seen photo ops of First Lady Michelle Obama visiting the Interior Department, HUD and other departments of the Excecutive Branch, something that hasn't been done since Helen "Nellie" Taft.  Actually, Nellie has an interesting biography and some people credit her in pushing her husband to run for President.  We have also seen Michelle agressively stumping for the  Presidents Stimulus Bill.

My question is this.  During the primary phase Michelle became a target, fairly or unfairly, because of her sometimes extreme statements,  and Barack declared his wife was "off limits".  Do you think Michelle is now back and we can see her in the cross hairs of public opinion and the media?  Do you think that would be fair?

When did people need permission to slag anyone off, unfounded or not, bad taste or cruel, its not gonna stop anyone who feels she is fair game...so what are we waiting for?

Michelle is the new Jackie! If anything she's a victim who is super intelligent and who dresses divinely, and who is the worlds foremost mother.

Don't believe me? Just ask CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, the New York Times, et al. - they'll tell you!

In American politics there is generally a "hands off the family" agreement among antagonists.  Most recently Bill and Hillary rightfully attacked and stopped the often cruel remarks made about Chelsea as she was going through those awkward growth years, mostly did not comment on the Bush girls other than a couple of "fun nights on the town.
I think Michelle, however, is a powerful and pasionate speaker even if I take issue with most of her opinions.  She has a personality that can be very polarizing and if she becomes politically active.  Together with Joe Biden, whose name may soon become an "active verb" it would make for a really fun Administration.

By the way..thank you for the "slag off" expression.  It 's not something I was familiar with and hope to be able to use it soon....

There will always be someone who likes, doesn't like, approves, disapproves-hell we can't even agree in the definition of submission--we will never agree on political issues.

My take--you put it out there, you get what comes--just be very comfortable WHAT and HOW you put it.

If she's going to be active politically, then she is fair game for her political views.

I think you make some great observations...   I guess we will never totally agree on political issues but it would be great if everyone can come to the table with constructive ideas, at least constructive in their view, and not show up just to be argumentative.

An individuals definition of "submission" would also be an interesting thread on "Ask a Mistress" or"ask a submissive/slave" forums.

I think you must be deaf dumb and blind to think she was ever out of the crosshairs of public opinion let alone the media.

Did you see that dress she wore to the inauguration?  She looked like hell...big, puffy white and covered in cotton balls.
No wonder I don't follow fashion trends.

In any event, I've always thought she was fair game.  Why would anyone listen to a president now when they never have in the past?
It's just going to be harder to cry racism now for him.

She was never out of the spotlight during this whole process nor will she be anytime in the next 4 years.

Do you think that would be fair?

The public role of the First Lady has changed with the times and cirucmstances through the years and of course the individual personalities of the women involved and the type of relationship with their respective husbands.

Michelle Obama is as much a target as anyone else, she made that decision the first time she campaigned for her husband. It's as simple as that, she did go alone sometimes and campaign for him, she made speeches, gave interviews for political purposes, etc, in the run up. If she had minimized her exposure during the whole process, I'd say she was not fair game, however, one can't be active, and protected at the same time. She made the decision.

So, bash away, or fawn over her, whichever, if Obama doesn't like it, him and his wife should have never decided to put her out there to begin with.

Target for what ? Who are we talking about here...what does she do ? She is fair game for what...unfair disparages ? Does she have a bull's eye on her back, if so...why ? She gives speeches, raises money for charities...something more and more Americans will need.

She is a hostess, a figurehead and 'famous' for only one thing...being 1st Lady. Wow...big deal in the big picture.

It helps if you read the OP, the wording was based on that.

From the OP...
During the primary phase Michelle became a target

By target I mean, the same bashing, praising, bias, that occurs to anyone and everyone that selects to engage actively in the political arena.

Why are you playing naive. It's simple, she campaigned for her husband sometimes independently, she put her face on the tube plenty of times for political ends, if she is also going to pursue political agendas while her husband is president like Hillary did, then of course she's going to be criticized, judged, scorned, praised, revered, by people. If she selects to merely host whitehouse dinners, and do charity events, she won't be of interest to the press, or anyone. But that really is not the picture the OP painted.

For reference threads are generally framed around the context laid out by the first post in the thread. Future responses are generally in relationship to that framing. Similar to what is called a conversation.

I think if youwill  recall the final couple of months of the primary, Michelle was really not out "stumping" the way she was earlier in 2008 when she drew so much flack for her comments about "never having been proud to be American"etc.  And she has already given some clue to her planning to be very much involved in Barack's Presidency.  As I said, it's going to be fun.

The public role of the First Lady has changed with the times and cirucmstances through the years and of course the individual personalities of the women involved and the type of relationship with their respective husbands.
Absolutely! There was Mamie Eisenhower...and than Jackie, and Hillary, as representative of  the extremes.  One was a devoted wife, one was a sophisticated  "Lady" who understood the history and signifiance of the Presidency the White House and represented the country with class, and the third was a "gutter fighter with a dream".  It's going to be fun to watch Michelle find herself.  It's a tougher job than she thought it might be, in my opinon, and that goes for hubby too!
