MzMia -> Corpocracy OR What products made in America are any other countries buying? (2/10/2009 8:26:40 PM)

What products made in America are other countries buying?
Seriously, I need to know.

What the hell is manufactured in this country that is needed, outside
of peanut butter?

Of course it is obvious I blame outsourcing for a lot of shit wrong these days.
The chickens have come home to roost.
Seriously? what products are made here that people all over the world are clamoring to buy?
In this video, that question is asked.
The answer is sadly funny.
Bring on the bailouts, create more damn jobs

I plan to check this thread in the morning before I go to work.
I want to read about all the great products made in America, and sent to
other countries.
I also want to hear about how the free trade system, and globalization is
working for us, these days.

Mz. Mia, a major part of the equation is what countries have most favored trade nation status and free trade agreements.  Off the top of my head agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, electronic goods and military equipment seem the most likely.

TheHeretic -> RE: Corpocracy OR What products made in America are any other countries buying? (2/10/2009 10:22:13 PM)

Airplanes, heavy equipment, machine tools, lots of technology (both hard and soft), entertainment.  Along with food, food and food.

Please don't tell me we aren't selling very much of it right now.  You're the one always telling us this is Great Depression II.  [;)]

Assuming the pending gov't "stimulus" doesn't cause a global economic stagnation, the customers will be back eventually.

jakelogan01 -> RE: Corpocracy OR What products made in America are any other countries buying? (2/10/2009 10:59:35 PM)

and don't forget we sell lots of services, from education to consultancy to r&d

We lead and export in various engineering disciplines. But as for some mentioned, we are and have been fast losing ground on heavy equip., (Japanese) and machine tools (Germans) but we do export advanced technology in many fields...Internet, computers, fiber optics, other communications equip. and specialty goods like various new materials used in building much of the above.

Still, much of what we export is not made here. Before IBM sold their PC business, they were made in Mexico. Don't know if that has since been moved to China.

However, I see no reason this stimulus will do any better or worse than all those previous stimuli.

BTW, most favored nation has little to do with our exports now and was mainly on imports. But we do have restrictions on drugs, agric. (we dump agric. on the world market) and textiles with the occasional sale of say lumber and steel tariffs on behalf of their investors.

We are tariff and duty free with most of our trading partners. MFN was used during the cold war to penalize trade with communist govts. around the world.

Furthermore,  I just believe you MzMia are concerned about the future as are many of us and especially the young should be. I do believe it has become quite obvious we will be alright for many years to come because all we have to do is pay the debt service.

It should be obvious now that the world economy has been sustained by American consumption, well over 1 billion man/hours/day of labor and its demands along with the exporting (spending) of our money and now we will restore the world economy on our great federal credit card while we happily go about...consuming maybe and not paying for it now but over the next 20-40 years.

Thanks for a better explanation on how the Most Favored Nation trade status works, Mr. Rodgers.

No kidding...I heard there was something like $100 million for condoms and devices in this new bill and for training on how to use them. I may seek a grant but I prefer cash.

And as much to my surprise...the religious right didn't insist on (lobby for) that.

Canada due to it latitude can only grow crops a few months out of the year, so a lot of the vegetables and fruit is imported from the US... much of the clothing  or fabrics comes from the US,  vehicles despite making a few models  not all that we assemblu is available through out Canada.. eg you cannot buy and Equinox or a Torrent made in Canada in Newfoundland... many  models sold here are assembled in the US...interestingly sales are still good here.

pretty much all gas furnaces and central air  units sold here are manufactured in the US,   a lot of the furniture sold here is manufacturer in the US, I know I had to wait a month to have my 2 areas rugs and canopy bed shipped in from the US as it was not in stock, mostly what we sell to the US is raw materials and then we purchase the finished goods made from the raw materials back  at a considerable mark up from what it is sold in the US.  anywhere from 30 to 40% more.  Canada is extremely dependent on US made goods, even for foreign import stuff a lot of it comes through US importers, books and magazines  are  another commodity that is brought through the borders, camping and fishing equipment mostly all from the US.  Canadians living close to the border tend to flock to the US to shop as it is cheaper to go there and buy and pay the duty

I know just sitting here both my desks, computers, new monitor, speakers, 3 of 4  printers, some books, chair, surge powerbox and bars , router, modem, data switch box, file cabinet, cabinet, a couple decks of poker cards are all from  US based companies...and if I kept looking around this room a little longer I would probably find more...I would have a harder time finding things made in Canada in my home

What, no IKEA?

awmslave -> RE: Corpocracy OR What products made in America are any other countries buying? (2/11/2009 1:08:51 AM)

Weapons (not sure but I believe US is the second after Russia in military weapons export), entertainment (Hollywood garbage sells surprisingly well), computer games and software, airplanes, cars, tractors, and so on.
The problem is huge net trade deficit. Export volume 2008 was $1.377 trillion, import  $2.19 trillion.

Everytime we - as a country - try to promote birth control in the 3rd-world, the religious right goes nuts!  How dare we promote sex and promiscuity and the concept of family planning!  For an occassional laugh, I subscribe to both the AFA and OneNewsNow, a couple of right-wing, religious nutball sites.  To hear these folks tell it, you'd think condoms were the root of all evil!

The problem, maya, is that the companies are US-based.  That means that the suits are over in the US and the manufacturing is done elsewhere.  A lot of the money for those products ends up overseas, and our manufacturing base is not strengthened.

You nailed it.

They base themselves here and manufacter all over the world (in cheap labor markets) so they can get around tariffs. Then they ship from here to other countries so once again not paying any tariffs.

Why do you think they hire all those lawyers and people on K Street to keep the rules filled with loopholes.

Hell look at the up roar when the other countries thought Obama was going to insist that the steel used to fix our bridges was made here in the USA, Canda, Germany, Japan and several others where on the news saying it would violate the trade agreements

I agree he did nail it.
Even though many products MAY be assembled here in the US, most of the
manufacturing did not take place in US.
