Vendaval -> 8 dead from tornado in Oklahoma (2/11/2009 2:47:25 AM)

The toronados are taking their toll on Oklahoma tonight, 8 persons dead according to authorities and plenty of property damage.  They won't know how bad it is until daylight comes.  Plus power outages in Oklahoma and Texas.

Welcome to Spring in Oklahoma!

This is nothing unusual for us around here, although it is starting a tad Early this year compared to the Average.  What it portends is an early spring, a seriously HOT ASS and longer than Typical summer, and a late fall - if the weather runs the way it always has when tornado season started this early.

While the tornados were Hitting the Edmond area about 20 miles N. W. of me,  I was in the back yard lounging in the hot tub - completely unaware that we even had tornado warnings out at the time.  And that was in the middle of the afternoon yesterday - about 230pm local time.  I didn't find out about it until the Hospice nurse showed up and mentioned that there were tornado warnings out.  I glanced up at the clouds, realized the ones directly overhead were the wrong color for spawning tornados (they get this strange green-grey tinge to them that I've seen Every time a tornado has been seriously Close to my place) shrugged and went back to enjoying the hot tub.  It wasn't until a couple of hours later while flipping through the news channels during dinner that I actually realized the extent of the nasty weather that hit the state yesterday.

Some of the most deadly tornados we have had in Missouri have been in winter. In 1982 I lost my roof in a December storm. Luckily I was  Christmas shopping with my daughters when it happened or it could have been worse.

God bless them

I was thinking about you Rhi, and wondering where you were in relation to the tornado.

The deadly one down in Lone Grove (a lil blink and ya miss it town near the OK/TX border) was nearly an hour's drive from where I live in the OKC Metro - and that's an hour of MY typical highway driving where 70 is about as slow as it gets lol.  The one on the north side of town up near Edmond is about 20 minutes from me, and was heading further north and east at a fairly good clip.  Everyone I know who was in the path got lucky - it skipped them - which was actually rather strange, since the one that made a mess out of a small portion of Edmond was on the ground for nearly 10 minutes.  The good part - despite how long it was on the ground, it was relatively weak - no more than an F1 or F2 at most.  Personally I don't start Worrying about them until they reach F4 stage and are visibly headed straight for me.

Rhi, I am glad you & dad,and your home are fine.  Do you have a basement or cellar on the property?  Some folks talk about tornado weather, is that what you mean by the longer and hotter summer?

hizgeorgiapeach -> RE: 8 dead from tornado in Oklahoma (2/11/2009 2:25:28 PM)

I have never gotten around to putting a storm cellar in at this place.  I had one at my old place, but rarely used it for anything other than storing camping gear and home canned foods.

Around here, what passes as "tornado weather" is kinda hinky.  Hot moist air and a dry front spawning supercell thunderstorms with cloud tops above certain altitudes.  Whether we will get much in the way of Tornado activity will really depend on how wet a year it turns out to be.  The heat won't play As much a part of it - other than to make us all sweat to death from humidity that's normally only seen in portions of the Gulf Coast.  (We've had a few summers where the phrase "slice me off a chunk o' that air, will ya?" have been no joke - humidity thick enough to slice it!)

Ugh...humidity like that, no thanks!

I was in Oklahoma that day.  Didn't see anything but rain...I thought tornado season was over until it hit.
We got home just in time.
