So, how many people here have been laid off recently? (like ithin 6 months) and in what fields?

Lynnxz -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 3:27:39 PM)

This should be an interesting poll.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 3:28:09 PM)

you would think so but noone responded

Aileen1968 -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 3:43:22 PM)

I haven't worked in nine years...been raising wee ones. Starting up a new business in the next few months and will be self employed. Hopefully, I will be successful. I'll have no one to blame but myself if I'm not.

Kalista07 -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 3:49:58 PM)

Interesting poll Asher......  i, myself was not laid off. But, the agency i work for laid off 32 employees... 29 of them being from the facility i work at.... You would think it would feel good to be one of the few left employed. But, reality was it brought a great deal of guilt, remorse, shame, depression, anxiety, stress, etc. etc. etc.

I just got laid off in August. I worked for a computer chip manufacturing place. When I got hired back in January, they had close to 2000 employees. They finally gave the last 1300 of us the axe in mid-August. Turned out alright though....Trade Act kicked in and now I get to go back to school for free! ^.^ (Too bad I'm still using student loans to have money to live on....)

MissMorrigan -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 6:24:06 PM)

I was laid off right before Christmas due to the downturn in the conveyance market - I worked for a firm of solicitors as Admin staff and unless I can find another place of employment within the same field I can kiss goodbye to a career as a legal executive.

DarkSteven -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 6:24:55 PM)

Nope, but have been laid off a dozen or so times previously (engineering, and lots of contract work), including twice from permanent jobs while W was President,and twice while Clinton was in office.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 7:44:37 PM)

wonder if this means there are a lot of tech types or what?

completenz -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 7:54:04 PM)

Other - Baker.

sub4hire -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 8:25:58 PM)

The layoffs in town were a protein plant shut down.  A good friend of mine in Kansas is losing her job.  Aerospace.

A few restaurants have shut their doors.  Goodyear is talking about shutting down.

For me, work has never been better.  I've actually got too much right now.  I close on a business I'm buying here on the 23rd as well.

califsue -> RE: laid off (2/12/2009 9:52:27 PM)

Thank goodness I have not been laid off. We may have furloughs but I work for a
local county district agency. In the late 80's/90's I understand
they did furloughs but we are cutting out the contract and temp employees and the
thought is at least what we are being told at this time that we are 'safe'. However,
the county is laying off 200 employees beginning in March primarily in the Health & Human
Services agencies which receive most of their funding from the Federal Govt.

wandersalone -> RE: laid off (2/13/2009 4:10:49 AM)

I was laid off 3 months ago, I was working Tech support for one of the big 3 computer companies
I havent been able to find a new job yet.

cravesdom -> RE: laid off (2/13/2009 5:48:05 PM)

My layoff was December of 2006. I was laid off by a hotel chain that I worked for. They were bought out by another company who decided to outsource the call center to a company in Canada. What was funny is that the place they outsourced to did a pretty bad job and they called and offered me my job back a month later "until they could get the new call center up to speed". I declined, but that was because I had already accepted another job.

Good luck with the job search!

fluffypet61 -> RE: laid off (2/13/2009 6:50:27 PM)

i'm retired now, but over the 38 years i was working as a mainframe computer programmer i was laid off by 2 oil companies, 1 computer service company, a corporate giant owned moving company  and an airline.  (That's in the 1970's, 1980's & 1990's.)

It's a horrible feeling because i equated my sense of self worth and value with my employment.  When i was laid off my self-esteem took a nose dive.  Then with each interview that did not result in a job i felt even worse.

i really feel for those who are seeking jobs.

I try not to but I know hat I do the same thing
my grandpa's voice always pops into my head saying something to the effect of "What are you worth as a jobless bum"

thornhappy -> RE: laid off (2/13/2009 8:01:24 PM)

I'm currently employed and managed to work in tech since 1983 with only 1 layoff (behind the power curve according to the EE Times).  Once was enough, and was worse in that all my friends were from work.
