The last time I bought a new car, I went online and was able to get the price the dealer paid (or should have paid), for my car with the options I wanted.  They took one look at the documents in my hand and offered me a price of about $500 over the dealer cost.  That was in 1999.

That's where I found this car....online.
I've checked the Kellybluebook.com & it appears to be a great price. I just want to make sure I'm not being cheated.

On a different note, are you walking normally now, Cali??

At this moment in time, I don’t think the old rules apply.
Two major dealerships closed in Orlando recently.
Some local dealerships do not stock 2009 trucks and have not ordered any.
The local Chevy dealer was giving away a Caviler if you buy a Silverado.
They were selling 2008 Toyota Tundra’s for $13,000.00 with $0 down.
They are selling 2009 Lancer’s for $10,500.00.
They are selling “brand new” (I presume they are 2008 because they don’t say what year) Kia SUV’s for $9,999.00.

It is a buyer’s market.  Haggle your ass off and I bet you can get a lot more than the 7% discount you mention.  Granted, many imports have a closed market and may not be so bad they have to offer a “buy one get one free” sale to move units but, 7% doesn’t seem like anything to do a happy dance over in this economy.

Shup ya ho-wannabe.

Okay... "almost."  Although if my plans mesh for this weekend, then the answer will change to "not anymore."

New vehicles are marked up an average of 8% from factory price to sticker price, not including tax, tags and fees.  If the model you're looking at is popular in your area, the mark up can be more.  If possible, wait until the end of the month, you will get a better deal, as many dealers are more willing to negotiate with purchasers in order to meet their sales quotas. Especially if they've had a slow month for sales.

I have heard that ConsumerReports.com has a total report on any vehicle, including what the dealer pays is included for a $14.00 charge.  Best friend says it was the best $14 they spent.

you may find Edmunds useful also

p.s. I heard a rumor that fuel-injected type vehicles have a need for premium fuel but, having never owned a fuel-injected vehicle, I cant swear that it is true. I'm sure someone can weigh in on that.

I've owned two fuel injected cars and neither needed premium fuel. The owner's manuals specified 87 octane fuel and they both ran fine on it.

Since you have the VIN, I would recommend doing a CarFax report, and check with an authorized VW dealer to see if they can give you any service info on that vehicle as well.

Edmunds.com is a great place to start.....first thing to do is knock 3% right off the top....they call it dealer hold-back, and it's what the dealer pays to keep the car on the lot.  Edmunds will also show you rebates that the DEALER gets that you the consumer never know about.    Checking the invoice is good too.....I actually did all of the above when I bought a pontiac, and got the car for $7500 LESS than the sticker on it......it was the last 1999 they had on the lot, and they wanted to unload it.....but really, Edmunds can tell you all the dirty little secrets car dealers don't want you to know about.

Also, as awful as it seems, take a guy with you.....sales people still refuse to treat women fairly.....MALE ones anyway, look for a female one if they have them at the dealership.  When I was in the market for a truck, I walked off of 3 lots simply because the salesmen couldn't grasp the fact that women buy trucks!  They kept wanting to show me "cute little cars".......idjits!

(car geek warning)

High-octane ("premium") fuel is needed to prevent pre-detonation in high-compression engines. It is usually necessary in engines that are turbocharged, supercharged, or otherwise designed for high-performance (cars from the late 50s through the early 70s often require premium because they were designed for a better grade of gasoline than we get today)

Modern computerized engine management systems can actually permit you to get away with running cheap gas in a high-performance engine, rather than making it *more* necessary, because they can change the spark timing and other factors to reduce pre-detonation when it occurs.

At any rate, the GTI will probably require premium fuel, for however much that matters. It's a pretty popular model, so you can't really expect the kind of discounts that people are getting on domestic pickup trucks nowadays, but you should still be able to do better than the price above. Unless you are, in fact, bartering some sort of... personal service... in lieu of cash, in which case I'm really not qualified to advise.

And just be aware, it may seem like a zippy little car, but a Mazdaspeed3 will beat it like a rented mule, for about the same money

I don't know how you feel about a newer used car, but usually dealerships have more wiggle room for negotiation on a used car.  With the current business environment I do not know if this continues to be relevant, as dealers also want to reduce their floor plans.  I do know that the advice to wait until the end of the month is good, I have a friend whose bf sales cars and he's always working 12+ hours on the last two working days of the month.

I bought my last vehicle from a car sales person that I had known for years. I was told 'before you come see me, have your current vehicle appraised at Carmax'. Excellent piece of advice. I did exactly that. When the dealership's used vehicle manager offered me $2,500 less than Carmax had, I said 'no - you'll have to do better than that'. He did - wasnt happy about it but he did :)
