Hey everyone, I recently thought it may be fun to make my own floggers. I could go out and buy one, but I love little projects like this, and think it would be really fun... plus gives a flogger my more personal touch ;) I've managed to find a couple online tutorials, but they're all for really shoddy looking cheap floggers. I want to make a proper one, leather braided handle and all. Anyone have any experience with making them? I'm basically looking for a tutorial to make a basic braided flogger for now, until i'm confident enough to experiment with my own designs. any tips and tricks would be great. also if you know of good suppliers, for leather etc, would love to hear about that too.

Thanks all, will keep the thread updated if i get enough info to get my little project going, and get enough interest!

A basic leather flogger is a piece of cake to make, as you have probably seen in the tutorials you've found. You can make it a bit "different" by cutting the ends of the tails a different way (angles, pointed, rounded, snake's tongue, etc) but be aware that this will change the feel (on the sub, I mean) when it is used. For fancy handles and such, look for tutorials on turk's head knots (very cool looking) and leather braiding, but it might be best to do at least one basic flogger before you try to get into the more complicated things. Personally, I go for basic and functional on my toys, so I can't help too much on the fancy stuff (although all of mine have one "fancy" thing that distinguishes them from others' work). The leather you choose will also distinguish your floggers if you go for quality and not whatever you can find at Tandy on the cheap. I prefer leathers like elk, deer, and sheepskin over cowhide for floggers. On the practical side, be aware that the thicker the leather and the wider the falls, the more thud it will have. Conversely, thinner falls and/or leather will produce considerably more sting. Also, do yourself a favour and get either a multi-strap leather cutter or a good cutting mat (the one I use is made for cutting fabric for quilts) and rotary cutter.
Good luck and post once you've given it a whirl!

thank you for your input, much appreciated. I'm aware of the different feels of floggers in regards to their sizing etc and different types of leather. I'll probably just start with bog standard cowhide, something relatively cheap where it wont matter too much if I screw it up. I can find enough info on line to get some semblance of a cool braiding pattern, the part i'm having trouble with is finding out how to braid/attatch it to/around wooden dowel for a handle, and how then to attatch the tails to the handle without making it look crap.

I have this book.  It will help you a great deal, but its also confusing when you get to the harder braiding.  And it shows you how to make a Turk's Head knot at the end of a handle.

You can also check out www.frugaldomme.com and see what she has.  That's a fun site as well.

Good luck!

I could never get the art of brading a turks head knot around the flogger handle...

However, I used wood or pvc pipes and just wrapped them in leather...

To weight the pvc pipe I would pur wax in first and add sand and then cap it off again with wax...

I used to make so many different items out of leather that were by far of better quality than you could buy...

Have fun experimenting!

Try one that is all one piece first, like this:

No tails to attach on that one, and you can alter the design to your liking.

Pretty toys are fun and nice to look at, but if it gets an "ouch", "holy crap", or "motherFUCKER" from your sub, then it works just fine. Being an s type, I usually am not in a position to see how cool a toy looks when it impacts my ass , so I look at function more than form.
The nastiest toy I've made to date cost $7 and is made from thin bungees and electrical tape. It won't win any awards for pretty, but it's fun watching experienced D types pick it up and say "Dayum! This is COOL"

Maya just provided you with a great site for this project. It's where I began. I've made 8 floggers so far. Here is the pattern I followed for the floggers, braiding and turks head ..

http://www.saroftreve.com/wwl/floggers.shtml
http://www.saroftreve.com/wwl/braiding/8round.shtml
http://www.troop54.com/knots/TurksHeadKnot/TurksHeadKnot.htm

When you get to the point of braiding here is what I can share..

.. the braiding process will shred your fingernails, but its necessary to get a nice tight braid .. dont forget the leather weld ... {SAVE YOURSELF} go to the hair section of walmart and spend a little over $1 to get these little ponytail elastics {get the very smallest ones} dont be afraid to use a lot of them. They are excellent to hold your braiding in place til it is completed. It also allows you to be able to put it down and return later without it coming UNbraided .. just slip an elastic band on every 1/8- 1/4 inch and you'll do fine.

For the turks head.. I found it easiest to practice the weaving, on my hand, many times to get good at it before I tried to take it to the flogger. This way, once you weave it then slip it onto the end of the flogger you'll know how to 'snug' it on one end more than the other. {you'll want it snugged more tightly closed on the outward facing end... dont forget the leather cement}  .. its pretty easy once you get the hang on it and iI dare say pretty darned rewarding to have made them yourself.

PS] On the turks head? Dont trim the 'tails' before you cement them, {I mean to the inner circle of the turks head, itself} and dont try to cement the tails before you have snugged it tightly for the flogger 'after' braiding is added.

Too, before applying the turks head {dont forget to cement the turks head to the flogger} I made a simple loop - affixed it to the exposed wooden dowel then slipped it through opening of the turks head to make a lanyard. Good luck.

I made a lot of floggers using various materials, not just leather.  Great for sensation play.  I also added things like spikes and beads at the end for more intense feelings.  Experimentation is really fun!

not just at the ends... beads, bells and spikes can be placed all the way down the falls... Just be sure to test it first, and dont put more than 3-4 on at a time...
I have a flogger with barbs running down each fall... It can be made to scratch lightly, or to bleed, all in the wrist :P

well my question, how does one make a flogger with many strands, giving the impression the flogger is very thick & heavy and yet remaining soft
would it depend on the type of leather ?
i am usually very good with my hands and pretty much able to build just about anything, but with the price of leather, i prefer advice before i get started

one other thing, multi colored floggers are nice, i would like to make a mix of black and red floger

I have yet to delve into my quest to make a flogger, but when I do, I want to make a black and red one too. check out some of the sites others posted, they def helped me get an idea. different leathers have different feels for sure, but a lot of it also has to do with how the strands are cut.
