KatyLied brought this up under another thread, and I found the question fascinating, so I thought it deserved it's own. I am really interested in seeing what others have to say about it.

This was her question:

quote:

It is a question for me and something I've thought about and discussed with some. Can a person who does not identify as a maso been "grown" into that role. Can they learn to tolerate more pain?

I am just going to copy and past my response from the original

Well, if I was to take it as literal...then I would say that yes, a person can be BORN masochistic. Even at a young age, I always enjoyed pain. I used to go to the South side of Chicago just to see what kind of fights we could into because I liked the pain lol. ( of course, I had a nasty temper too, that might have had something to do with it lol )

Now, through the years, I have learned to like even more pain. My level of tolerance has gone up.

Have I ever reached a stage where I had to be taught to tolerate more? Probably, but I could not tell you the times. Everyone has a limit that they reach sooner or later, but I have always enjoyed being pushed past it, just to see if I could. So, I guess in a way...you can be 'taught' also.

Many people learn to enjoy pain as pleasure and become masochists, whether it's a mental block and/or physical block that is shifted for them.

But not everyone.

Interesting question and one I can address only as an outsider.

When she asks 'Can a person who does not identify as a maso been "grown" into that role. Can they learn to tolerate more pain?', it's important to clarify that tolerance of pain isn't necessarily the hallmark of a masochist (and perhaps just the opposite). Also, 'a person can be BORN masochistic' probably means nurture, not nature, meaning there's probably not a 'pain slut gene', but an early childhood interest that became a craving.

I'm not sure if this relates, but a girlfriend of mine who had the tenderest nipples suddenly started asking to have them crushed. She didn't think she was masochistic, but she used to demand more and more, and went from one extreme to the other.

It is my understanding the human animal can associate many things with pleasure—even things widely thought of as unpleasant or tabboo—under the right circumstances and conditions.

Addictions take nearly countless forms; they are not relegated merely to substance abuse. One can become addicted to pain as surely as one can become addicted to food or music or coffee. Repetition, deep-level suggestion, positive reinforcement, and association with reward are the usual tools to wield in artfully molding a human creature into a personal pain slut.

tolerance, yes. But i think of a masochist as different from just having a higher tolerance of pain. Can you grow from a place where you are not really capable of taking much pain to craving/needing much more intense pain?

the human body, and moreso the human mind, is a powerful and wonderous thing. it can be taught or conditioned to adapt with various responses, including responding in a certain way to stimuli. so can someone be conditioned in some way to associate pain with pleasure? certainly, just as rats can be to push buttons or avoid grids and dogs to salivate to bells.

I would have to say that yes, you can go from just tolerating pain at whatever level that may be to actually associating pain with pleasure and desiring pain for the sake of pleasure. I believe, as posted previously in the thread, it has to do with mental association. Im currently experiencing an interesting evolution regarding my own masochism. It is interesting to experience and "watch" as it occurs.
In my case, it has occurred primarily because I love a sadist. I cant imagine, though, that some degree of masochism wasnt already there waiting to be discovered....you can't get blood from a turnip, after all.

I think a person can develop masochism if they find that bone in their body and want to interact with it. And then, many will never be able to go there, ever. Just depends on what drives someone and what they want.

Speaking of Masochist. I think most are born to it much as Sadist. Both are teh sme only different sides of coin. I knew at a very early age I was different, I didn't understand it. But I knew I shouldn't tell and it should be kept quite. I felt scared, embarassed and very very confused. After my development began I grew in tolarance, and craving. I am lucky to have found my purpose. Many never do.

I believe that I was born a masochist. I read EVERYTHING that DeSade wrote while I was a teenager. It has been in the last year that I 'grew' into a Painslut.

It is my thought that one can learn and grow into something. But if it is not in them... I dont know how you could force it... if you know whay I mean.

I don't think you can turn someone into a masochist. I believe masochists are born. MAYBE environment has something to do with developing masochistic tendencies, but if that's true, it must be something that happens very early in childhood.

But although I don't think you can turn someone into a masochist, I do think it's possible to guide a masochist to tolerate more and different types of pain, to associate them with various emotions--basically to learn about who they are and what it means to live life as a masochist. I can't tell you how many times I've heard masochists say that they never expected to enjoy such-and-such or they never imagined themselves doing such-and-such (until their top did it to them).

In other words, the signal has to be on first, but once it's on, you can fine-tune it to some degree.
