It appears George Bush was right. History is already looking favorably on him. C-Span has come out with its latest ranking of the best Chief Executives in its President's Day survey of noted historians. While many people thought him the worst President ever, it turns out he is only the 7th worst, beating out Millard Fillmore, Warren G. Harding, William Henry Harrison, Franklin Pierce, Andrew Johnson, and James Buchanan. In another interesting note, considering the likening of the stimulus package and other Obama proposals to the New Deal programs, FDR placed 3rd, behind only Lincoln and Washington. Among other recent Presidents, Clinton ranked 15th, Bush Sr. 18th, and Reagan 10th. Total Scores/Overall Ranking

Interesting how Truman comes in at #5, after being so widely disliked during his administration. I think we can all agree to hope that this administration doesn't push George II any higher up the list.

Poor William Henry Harrison! The guy never had a chance; he died after only 31 days in office, and he comes in 3 places below W! Actually, when you think about it, W would have done a lot less harm if his term had only lasted 31 days. If Cheney had been President, he might not have gotten away with quite as much of his sneaky dealings.

I'm disappointed that Jimmy Carter only ranked 25th. After all he did...errrr he solved the.... errr... he built.....ooops... (scratching my head here..sorry) He must have done something.... oh yea.. he brought peace to the Middle East, and got rid of the Panama Canal. Could you imagine the bill for infrastructure costs that the canal would have cost us in this "Recovery Act..."..sorry I was laughing..in this Recovery Act of 2009. Oh, almost forgot, Jimmy did cut back on government employment..in the CIA! Ooops...can't forget those wonderful interest rates we ALL earned on our investments in those wonderful Carter years..Think I got 16% on goverment Bills..thank God the misery index went to 20%! How many in the Obamanation remember the "misery index"..I wonder? "The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America. He really knew how to instill "depression" in people. Of course, another great president is in the making today. The times are different but the words of Obama selling the "urgent need" to pass the Stimulus Bill requiring immediate action.and no time for legislators to read the Bill. So the Bill gets passed but, unfortunately, it happend on Valentine Day weekend and dinner with Michelle was booked. So the "urgent" lack of time to read the Bill was put off for FOUR DAYS....while the 48 hour reading period was taken away from the House by Pelosi. So where is the urgency? I do so love how The late 70's economy is laid at the feet of the man who took office in 1977 and not the party that held office for the preceeding 8 years when the problems actually started. Who instituted the wage and price freeze in 1971? Who bungled the early days of the fiat currency economy? When was the OPEC embargo?

Well, it is not really a fair comparison, W. is still above ground and the ones lower in the ranking are dead and largely forgotten except by historians.

Bill Clinton's ranking was helped by his good marks for "Crisis Management" ranking 15th versus W's rank of 25. All Bush had to contend with was a recession, 9/11, and a democrat Congress that bordered on being traitors undermining the moral of our troops on the battlefield with furious attacks on the mission and that "all was lost", that we were involved in a "civil war"..and on and on...BS. All that pales in comparison to Billy and his "crisis" being married to Hillary and "staff" meetings with a kid intern in the oval office. I guess the only difference between Obama and Clinton in the Oval Office is that Barack took off his jacket and Bill took off his pants! We have come a long way baby!!

I am just wondering if your election of Obama, might be likened to our election our Tony Blair right back at the start of New Labour's reign. Blair apparently came out of nowhere, he was not one of the big players noticeable at the time, yet he swept to victory, similar I believe to Obama. Britain at the time was crying out for change after the Conservative rule of Thatcher followed by Major, the people needed change and we got it, but not as we expected it, nor many liked it, what this Blair brought was something neither side was used too. I remember the Conservative billboard posters of the time, advocating wariness of Blair and New Labour, and this blog I have just found whilst seeking those Billboard images, seems to mirror my thoughts, as applied to the American situation. I am not writing this to piss on anyone's bonfire, nor start a political war,as we have seen too many of them on here with recent events, but what I am saying is when a country or people seek desperate change, that opens a situation where change will come, but not necessarily in the way one would like it. Maybe it took a presidency ruled by Bush to make Obama look like the way forward, just like it took Thatcher to make way for Blair. Don't let a person's charisma hide their true objective.

Reminds me of how Chou Enlai was once asked what he thought the significance of the French Revolution was. He said it was too soon to tell. If I were doing such a list, I don't think I'd include anyone within the past 50 years. Dust is still settling on those administrations, so the view is murky.

Now Obama has to deal with a worse recession,9/11(still un-resolved),Iraq(a bunch of un-necessary bushit),frozen credit markets,nationalized banks,the highest debt inherited by a pres.,etc.,etc.,etc. There wasn`t one thing bush was involved with that he didn`t fuck up.Not one. From dirtier air,to weaker protective systems,to Iraq and other foriegn policy failures,to the financial crisis...... ~~~~~~~~~~ I`m curious. If history is going to vindicate bush,what is it that`ll happen,what event(s) or conditions will there be for bush to be viewed as something other than a what he`s viewed as now,a failure?
