Scientists believe a common heart medicine may be able to banish fearful memories from the mind.
The Dutch investigators believe beta-blocker drugs could help people suffering from the emotional after-effects of traumatic experiences.

would you pop ever some?

Sounds like it could be very dangerous if a total work up on the patient isn't done.  Not something I would be comfortable knowing a family member was on for any condition unless all medical facts were known.  Most doctors that might use this medication for this reason might not tell the patient all they need to know.  A good reason a patient should research every medication a doctor priscribes.  There is often one little medical detail... that could pose a problem.

For me... no friggin way in this lifetime.  These types of drugs do all sorts of things to the body.  I think it might be easier to deal with some spider pictures or suprise sounds.

No. The bad memories, are a part of me and they have shaped me and helped form some of who and what I am today. They don't bother me any more, and are rarely painful. P

What do you mean she left me and took all the money, when did that happen? Well at least I still have those lucrative Enron shares she didn't get those MwahHaHaHaHa.[8|]

I agree with YHMA.  Without the bad stuff (and attendant memories) I wouldnt be who I am today, or who I will become tomorrow.  Each memory, good or bad, influences decisions I make whether I'm aware of it or not

Could it get rid of my visions of my bangs, circa 1988-1992?????  If so, i might be on board....

The thing is, is that it doesn't take the memory away... just dulls your senses... amoung other things.  One thing I read stated that beta blockers could bring on dementia stuff faster too.  These things do all sorts of things to all sorts of body organs and chemicals.  For the right medical condition they are great... but...

came4U -> RE: A pill that banishes bad memories (2/18/2009 2:09:34 PM)

Yeah, it does sound dangerous.  Hiding problems with a drug like this is the wrong way to grow as a person to learn how to handle life.  Hope it never gets approved for use anywhere.  Shit, booze n other drugs do the same thing, this would only be a prescription for disaster.

OMFG, I have a grad pic on scanned to CD, by gawwds, my hair was like a redheaded Farrah Fawcett.  But, I sure cry when I see the ageless skin and single chin hehe.  If I were a man, I'd DO ME. Clicks heels....nope, you can't go back to Kansas Dorothy. *%^#

As for the OP, oh hell no. I've worked hard to learn something from each and every bad memory. I am not shaking them loose that easily.

Well, this may be good for some military veterans who suffer from "P.T.S.D."
I know a couple of veterans who suffer from (very) traumatic things that happened to them. I don't even want to mention what happened to them because it would give you nightmares.
Although the psych people are now attributing "P.T.S.D." to everything from dog bites to car accidents to a thousand other things.

yes, but as the article states, it is harldy worth the risk of those Veterans getting Alzeimers earlier in life or if one isn't even genetically predisposed to the disease.

SurrenderForMe -> RE: A pill that banishes bad memories (2/18/2009 3:18:44 PM)

I'd do it, if the side effects are not too bad.

awmslave -> RE: A pill that banishes bad memories (2/18/2009 3:35:10 PM)

I see lot of practical applications: perfect hitman "morning after pill". I would not reccomend it to anybody though. It is based on trial/error junk science and the side effects are unpredictable; could be a modern version of lobotomy.

FullfigRIMAAM1 -> RE: A pill that banishes bad memories (2/18/2009 3:40:30 PM)

I might try it.
The late comedian Richard Jenni had a great routine (calling it bullchit), about a commercial that offered a product that boasted it would improve your memory and make you happier.    M

angelikaJ -> RE: A pill that banishes bad memories (2/18/2009 3:58:22 PM)

They actually began using it after 9/11.
Evidently if given soon after trauma, for some people it can prevent PTSD... which is more than a "bad memory".

Me too. pics

I have been with a couple of women I would just as soon forget....Can you target selected memories?

There is a lot of fine tail that I would hate to see get washed away just to cleanse my palate of a few undesirables.

MarsBonfire -> RE: A pill that banishes bad memories (2/18/2009 4:45:29 PM)

Great! Combine it with roofies, and some of the right wingers on this site will finally have their perfect "date rape" cocktail.

Crush -> RE: A pill that banishes bad memories (2/18/2009 5:24:25 PM)

Hmmm.....maybe we give it to the libs for the past 8 years and when B.O. leaves office hand one to the cons.

Seems perfect...oh wait...us other folks would have to be taking them ALL the time...

Seriously:  I am the sum of all my experiences, good and bad.  Lose something, lose part of myself.   Though I do see a PTSD value to it.
