http://msa4.wordpress.com/2009/02/08/republicans-to-starving-artists-let-them-eat-cake/

I am sure there are better links.. but this is one to go on.  Fifty million dollar's!  I think there are better things to spend the money on!

Artistic types... get out there, get ready and get your application in.  Who know's how they will use this money... but if you see hard times coming and you have an artistic streak... get out there and grab your's by figuring out how they might do it and being ready with a grant write or whatever it is going to take.

This is fucking insane!

I have always been against government funding of artists. Nothing against the artists, it's just that they should be funded by those who appreciate the art, not the taxpayer.

This just goes on my shit list with all the other entries. Getting pretty long I might add.

There's probably all sorts of "stimulating the economy" items that you dislike.  People negotiate to get their pet projects in.  It's how the government has always worked.

Well the way it has worked isn't working and they need to stop it and stop it now...  You can't run a household on such thinking and as we can all see, you can't run a country that way either.

Although I know there is various grants and funding available for those engaged in the arts, options which might make my life a whole lot easier, but I will not go there on that, as I have a sense of pride about what I should be entitled to and what I should not. Basically what I am entitled to should be no more than any other profession, as art is somthing I can do, not a super human skill. and as it is not a super human skill, it should not be rewarded as such. People who seem to have the ability to sanction vast sums of money for an idea, something new and novel should get their head out of their arses and take a look at the rest of the world, where people are starving to death. Maybe there lies a hope though, maybe these people should look upon the starving and needy of the world as art, and there reward it. So you might say award millions to the starving and needy might destroy the art, but then as this planet is constantly changing, art should change with it, it should be there and then decay as life decays. After all, life is art.

Money it seems is scarce at the moment, if there is some going spare, let it go to the disadvantaged, starting in the country of origin.

Ok so arts funding is a easy target, it can work really well. But if you bother to look at examples where its done well.
It generates far more money than it than it takes.
I was in Madrid this weekend and visited the Prado.
The queue for the Bacon exhibition were round the block, all day every day. 90% would be visitors to the city, bringing God knows how much money into the city.

Who is going to be buying art when they have no job or only have a low paying job to keep a job at all?

People will go to art galleries and museums.  I took field trips as a child, as did my kids, I still do when I vist different cities..  I think it's about spending money to simulate the economy as a whole, and that will happen by reaching many citizens, not just the poor.

If you really want to stimulate the economy  then do it the right way.
Cut FICA tax by 50 %. kill the cap gains tax for the next 6-8 years.
If you want to fund the arts, that should be direct funding  not TAXPAYERS money.
look up NOT YOURS TO GIVE. Great read

I'd like to know how this 50 million works and how much it generate's in jobs and in the economy.  I guess we can't know that right now... but I do wonder if there will be an accounting of all this money.  I simply think there has to be a better way to spend 50 million.

I'm thinking don't hold your breath.  I don't see the government as the premier agent of transparency.

I will let you know when I see some of it........

I imagine it would go to things like art programmes in schools, museums, etc.

Ok Coldwarrior what sort of return would you expect for 50 million? Stimulating the arts and creative industry’s is more than worth while. How much wealth has say some body like Jonathan Paul Ive generated for Apple? Did he pay for his arts education? How much has the Edinburgh festival generated for Scotland? How many people visited Bilbo in Spain before they became a major arts centre?

I don't want to make it sound like there isn't a problem with unemployment rising, but with the unemployment rate at 7.6%, there is still the vast majority of people working right now.  I would imagine it would be those people who will be buying "art".

I also don't want to sound as if I'm defending any particular part of the stimulus bill, least of all any earmarks for the NEA which has a history of funding the most ridiculous things with public money... but there are art organizations eligible for funding (such as the Los Angeles Opera and the Seattle Art Museum) that don't really fit your image of "starving artist" either.

This whole thing just illustrates how difficult and complicated it gets when you start trying to reach an agreement on who is entitled to public support.  Personally, I don't feel the federal government has such a great track record... kinda like putting the loonies in charge of the loony bin.

Link that could be interesting.

http://www.recovery.gov/

This is supposed to be a site where we can track where all that money goes and what it is used for.  It also has a link there where you can read the stimulus package.

Artists of the past have nearly always been poor and lived hand to mouth, often it was the case an artist had a decision to make does he buy materials, or food, often it was the materials that were bought and sustenance scrounged. Many of the great artists we now celebrate today died in poverty, yet their works are being traded now for what in our present society sees as obscene amounts of money. But it is the cynicism of the present art movement that is going for gold, this current need to award stupid money is fairly recent, a phenomenon that artists such as Damien Hurst have admitted he is going to exploit to ridicule the arts movement and it's mentality. But there is no hero worship for Hurst, because he is getting very rich doing it and is at a level of wealth where he can ridicule his buyers and not worry, because his ridcule is seen as art to others.

Well taking the arts out of public schools and not teaching creativity and arts is a bad thing for students. I also believe that having a society without art would be an awful place to live. I have seen artists get a small grant but never tons of money going to one artist to become rich. There are very few rich artists out there.

I thought it was wrong to take art and music out of the school's.  I love what it can do for a person and had my um's doing anything I could to help them be creative and expressive.  It is a shame that we don't value these things more... but still this money going to art... I have to wonder if it will actually go to where it could do the most for the buck and wonder why we must focus so much on art when there just has to be something else my brain dead can't come up with at the moment that would be better use.

I don't see how trade off's work.  We had a funny lil family joke going when a family member wanted a newer truck and the spouse wanted a um.  The joke deal was... he got the truck, she got the um.  At one point I did wonder if they were serious and of course being who I am to them, had to light heartedly laugh and point out that both weren't the greatest idea in this economy, but I knew that truck was going to be in the drive way.  So a few days later, it was.  I asked if it had room for the new um.  One not so wise move... being agreed to with a really not wise move is really stupid and I don't see how stupid can run a country without losing the truck and the um in a manner of speaking.

I don't know, the Bodies exhibit, Dialog in the Dark... wouldn't projects like those benefit from this? Restoring historical sculptures and buildings 'seems' to be included as well, but I cannot tell, because the article provided is poorly written, and strongly biased.
